Did Obama Mean "Stupid-ly" or "Stoopid-ly?"

2009-07-26-ObamaJz.jpg

Those who are criticizing President Obama's choice of the word "stupidly" in describing the behavior of Cambridge, MA police officer Sgt. James Crowley in the racially controversial arrest of black Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. at his home last week, clearly are not familiar with urban slang. It's quite possible the nation's first African-American president was in fact paying the arresting officer a compliment.

For example, according to www.UrbanDictionary.com, "dope" doesn't mean "fool," it actually means "cool." "Fresh doesn't mean "sassy," it means cool, or "dope." "Def" doesn't mean hard of hearing, it also means "fresh" or "dope." "Phat" does not mean overweight, but "hot" (as in pretty/sexy) or, again, "dope." And similarly, "stoopid" is also used to describe something or someone cool, fresh and dope. Confusing for sure, but hey, I didn't make this stuff up.

Look, we are talking about a president who has rapper Jay-Z on his iPod.
Perhaps it's possible that Obama, in an attempt, however un-dope, was trying to grab some street cred and sound fresh, and therefore was commending Sgt. Crowley's mad-cool, or stoopid police work? A little far-fetched maybe, but everyone should just chillax and stop trippin' and get outta the Prez's grill. Fo' shizzle.

Satire is supposed to be a little bit comical, ironic, and exaggerated, right? This must be satire-lite.

President could have forwarded this letter instead of speaking to nation:

Dear Professor Gates,
Please listen before you alter fates. Do not let one’s pride,Cause this great nation to divide. Look at what is happening in such a short time, What this is undoing is really the crime. All across America people are upset, Now I ask you Sir what good will all this get? A learning lessons already taught, So many people’s mending has been for naught.A man has risen to lead us all, Do not be a part of America’s fall. This is the year of our lord, two thousand and nine, So please do what you know to be divine. One planet, one race, as one beating heart, The world may end some day, please do not be the start. We lead the world with freedom first, Do not let racism quench it’s undying thirst. To not enslave us all at last,Lets look forward away from our past. The mistakes we make and continue to do, Could spell the end of more then me and you. By bringing down our great nation, All of this for the sake of sensation. I ask you not to let our enemies see, Such things may still live in the land of the free. I love the different colors of man, We were created according to plan. So different and the same,All of us with our own name. Man and woman combine, To create new life is so divine.

Thank you, Andy.
Serious?
Satire? Flat our jest?
Either way, your take on this is fantastic!

Really? This is a real article? If this is important and supposedly relative, the Post is going way down hill.

Yes, I'm sure the President meant "stoopidly." God in Heaven...

To DemForLyfe and Phntstc Peg......have you heard of satire? Humor? Tongue in cheek commentary?! C'mon guys, lighten up here. I am mocking the absurdity of this whole controversy and its obvious racial overtones.

I have no problem with satire whatsoever. What I do have a problem with is the Post concentrating on satire, jokes from David Letterman about Sarah Palin, and what Michelle Obama is wearing, when the most important thing the Post needs to do is push to advance important issues, especially what was a major defeat in health care.

Barack's: Where Everybody Knows Your Name

Professor Came Home. Police Called. President Irked. Punditry Gone Wild.
President invites all for a beer. Professor, Policeman, and President.

Where else can a diverse clientele work out problems over brewskies. Intellectual Frasier Crane, opinionated but good hearted civil servant Cliffie Clavin, celebrity host, Sam Malone. Only 1 missing (Norm!). You may be well known but you're really famous when...

Ken Rynne"s Parody "Where Everybody Knows Your Name"

"Comin home from a long lecture tour To find your door is jammed / And your oh so helpful next door neighbor Has decided to call the man

"The call said "burglary in progress" Up in Harvard Square / A routine call was expected but found the professor there

"At the end of a long health care presser Asked about the melee / Admitted you didn"t know all the facts But the cops acted "stupidly,"

Wouldn"t you like to get away?
Sometimes you want to go Where everybody knows your name
And they're always glad you came
You want to be where you can see. Our troubles are all the same
You want to be where everybody knows your name.

Nobody"s here now to cast blame / You may achieve some worldly fame
(vamp) Why not come to Bar-ack"s place. / Where he doesn"t have or need a key
You"re really famous / When the Cambridge cops know your name.

(Or when YOU'RE invited to Barack's Place.)

This article is stupid and insulting, primarily that the writer would be foolish enough to insinuate that the POTUS would interchange between slang and proper English at a press conference of this important topic.

I understand trying to defend the president but he just sounds silly.

Seems that white people just don't understand..no matter how much we explain it, not everyone whose black talks slang.

This isn't funny and no one likes to be mocked because y'know it's like totally wrong OK (white girl airhead voice added)

I believe Obama was refering to the old adage "Never attribute to malicious intent what could be interpeted as stupidity" . He was basically saying do not attribute Gate's arrest to racism and was trying to helpfully diffuse the polarizing event.

The reporter asked Obama a stupid question, given the press conference was about health care. President Obama gave a stupid response, given the press conference was about health care.
Professor Gates gave a stupid response, when asked to show his ID. Officer Crowley gave a stupid reaction by arresting an elderly professor who was no threat to anyone.

Agree with all but the last one. Gates was becoming highly agitated. How was Crowley supposed to know that he wouldn't become violent? And spare me the "elderly professor" routine. He's only 58. You make it sound like he whiles away his days in a wheelchair at the nursing home.

the man walks around with a cane. The police officer has a gun and multiple backup officers outside. I would really love to know what the offense was that was worthy of arrest, I've read the police report and Crowely wasn't even smart enough to list one. "Disorderly Conduct" on one's own property doesn't exist. Why do you hate freedom?

The worst thing about this tempest in a teapot is that this 'controversy' has overshadowed the ENTIRE CONTENT of the rest of that night's business - what should've been reported @ length was the president's answers to questions about health care reform.

I am continually disappointed by US media's ability to 'stupid down' every important issue facing citizens in this country.

And what Obama should have said was I don't have all the facts, but from what i see I don't think that Gates should have been arrested. That would not have brought the same response as basically calling the cop stupid.

No, the worst thing about it is that I don't think people have any idea of the disproportionate effect lacking a public option has on African Americans. As the NYtimes put it:
"Race and place of residence can have a staggering impact on the course and quality of the medical treatment a patient receives, according to new research showing that blacks with diabetes or vascular disease are nearly five times more likely than whites to have a leg amputated and that women in Mississippi are far less likely to have mammograms than those in Maine."

This is all about Gates temper tantrum from beginning to end. It could have all ended in a matter of a couple minutes by just saying yeah it may have looked like someone was breaking in, but my door was jammed, and here's my ID. Or you do like Gates and act like a victim because your puffed up ego doesn't let a lowly cop ask you questions. It could have even ended after Gates finally did show the ID. The cop said he tried to give Gates his name and badge number and Gates just kept shouting and the cop could not hear his radio, so he asked Gates to step out on the porch. Or Gates could have simply looked at the name tag on the cop's shirt. But Gates continued to be out of control. Sometimes you take people into custody because they refuse to act rationally. Had Gates fallen on the porch or went back inside and had a stroke, we would be reading something like "Racial profiling incident leaves scholar in coma". This was Gates' fault, pure and simple.

Does your definition of "..fault.." also include an officer thinking HE doesn't have to follow established police protocol, Gasparilla? Here's a lil' lesson in Massachusetts police procedure and protocol, both of which were handled VERY poorly by Crowley (supposedly a 'trained professional' in his field): http://www.slate.com/id/2223379/ ..instead of defusing a tense situation, Crowley exacerbated it into an arrest of the Professor, who was rightfully on his own property. Crowley DID "..act stupidly.." - end of story (and excuses on his behalf). ...

WTF! The police officer is being paid to be the bigger man. The police officer is given a weapon mouths an oath and is therefore locked in to being the bigger man. The professor did not break any laws. If no laws were broken the arrest was stupid. I think the officer is lucky that Mr. gates is now being the bigger man. One stupid arrest like this is all it take for the lawmakers to come up with another crazy law intended to fix it. This officer owes the entire country an apology. This was not and never has been about racial profiling, it is about abuse of power. This officer had the power to arrest Mr. gates and used it. The charges were immediately dropped because the prosecuter knew the case could not be won and the end result would be punishment brought down on the entire police force.

There is no crime described in Crowley's official version of the way Gates behaved. Crowley says explicitly that he arrested Gates for yelling. Nothing else, not a single threatening movement, just yelling. On the steps of his own home. Yelling is not a crime. Yelling does not meet the definition of disorderly conduct in Massachusetts. Not a single shouted word or action that Crowley has attributed to Gates amounts to disorderly conduct. That is why the charges had to be dropped.

Give us a break!
People are not that stupid! Gates refused to show proper ID, you know like a drivers license that shows that particular address on it, instead he was "offended" when the police would not accept his Harvard ID.

Stop trying to defend this blatant idiocy of Obama's, he knew exactly what he was saying when he said it. This is an issue that he should have stayed away from, Obama was baited into this and unfortunately his racist activist agenda came out for all to see.

I was put in the exact same position as Gates twenty one years ago, my neighbor did not recognize me and had called the police, when the cops showed up they wanted to see some ID, I initially showed them my employer supplied ID but was immediately told that it was not sufficient enough to show that I actually live there, I showed my drivers license and all was good, the cops even told me that I should be thankful that I have neighbors that are looking out for my property. I said it then and I will say it again, I thank all my neighbors then and now for being vigilant when so many just turn their backs.

Obama owes EVERY SINGLE POLICE OFFICER in this country an apology for his remarks AND Henry Louis Gates owes James Crowley an apology for starting this whole racially charged issue.
03:53 PM on 07/26/2009
You should have filed a law suit, we would have stood behind you......
05:07 PM on 07/26/2009
Why would you file a lawsuit when suspicious activity was reported and the police asked for proof that I did in fact live at the residence in question?
I would have been more upset had they not wanted proof that I actually lived there, this shows that my neighbors are looking out for me and the police are doing their job.

And what exactly would be the rallying cry or slogan?

People are trying to make the cops out to be bad when they are doing exactly what they are supposed to do.

How would you feel if your home were burglarized and later found that the neighbors had called the cops to report suspicious activity, the cops showed up but the burglar said he lived there and refused to show ID proving this and the cops left after taking the burglars word for it? Would you casually dismiss it as you seem to think that everyone should when it comes to the Gates case? Or would you be angry that the police did not pursue the proof of residence?
04:25 PM on 07/26/2009
President Obama was right before and now. He was asked for his opinion and he gave it. Some people just didn't like his honest, multifaceted answer. It was their right to disagree.

Besides, President Obama never claimed to be objective and went out of his way to qualify his comments yet the bogus media distorted what he said anyway. I'm not surprised!

President Obama has every right to answer questions. I appreciated his candor then and now!
President Obama did NOTHING to appologize for.
05:58 PM on 07/26/2009
Yes he did, Obama's comments have made the police department look like a bunch of bumbling idiots.
What exactly is stupid about asking for proper ID that shows proof that Gates actually lives there? Obama should have stated that even though gates is a friend, he would not comment on this issue until he is aware of all the facts.
Obama is the President, anything and everything he says will be scrutinized to no end and the media didn't distort what he said, Obama said it live on national TV, everyone heard the exact same thing at the exact same time.
Obama needs to apologize to the police just as publicly as he has offended them.
The police have a hard enough job as it is they don't need it exacerbated by the off the cuff comments by the President of the United States.
Your opinion is just as good as mine and my opinion is that Obama slandered the police and owes them an apology.
