The GOP Has Never Before Seen Liars Like Gingrich and Romney

Posted: 01/31/2012 10:34 am

Make no mistake: politics is dirty game. To play, and to play to win, you have to sell your soul to to the devil. You're on a 24/7 spin cycle. You disparage your opponents. You stretch the truth. And you lie. Every candidate is guilty of these tactics. And none in the history of the Republican Party have done it better or more blatantly and consistently than Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. They've taken the art of lying into a whole new stratosphere. Romney and Gingrich are different in the sense that, while most politicians tell the truth most of the time and toss in a bit of truth-stretching, with a few lies here and there, these two lie all the time. Their entire candidacies are built on the re-writing of history. It's a waste of time for voters to listen to anything either of them have to say because it's likely every single thing they claim about themselves, and each other, is a lie.

The picture each candidate has painted of himself is utterly laughable. Romney, the 1%'er with the Swiss bank accounts and 13.8% effective tax rate, portrays himself as the economic steward most able to help the little guy. This despite a business career at Bain Capital, and myriad political positions, that exist solely to line the pockets of rich folk like him at the expense of said little guy. He's lied about his views on abortion, gay marriage, immigration, climate change, health care and practically everything else on which he's ever staked an opinion.

Gingrich, the consummate K Street Washington insider with the ethics-violations monkey on his big-spendin', earmark-lovin', serial-philanderin' back, has been running as the "anti-establishment" values candidate, leading a "rebellion" against the amoral "elites." But if we judge him by his political career, his academic accomplishments or his wealth, he's as elitist as they come. And while Newt whines about the "unfairness" of Romney's attacks, he's been responsible for more invective and extremist rhetoric than anyone in D.C. history, single-handedly changing the overall tenor of political discourse since he emerged in the late 1980's. Then there's the colossal hypocrisy of his personal life. Newt never met a mistress he didn't like... or married.

These two presidential hopefuls, as evidenced by their many debate performances, lie so much it's virtually impossible to distinguish between their reality and fantasy. Neither can remember what commercials they've produced, what investments they have, what they've said in the past, what they currently believe or anything factual about each other. They'll literally say anything to become elected. Anything. And the debates themselves have become a spectacle that we watch just to see which one will catch the other in the biggest lie.

One thing's certain: one of these political Pinocchios will be running against President Obama later this year. So strap on your seatbelts, because the ride's gonna get a whole lot bumpier. The Mitt/Newt Traveling Lies Show is just the warm-up act...

I thought Nixon was a bigger liar. He had a secret plan to unveal after the election to end the Viet Nam war and people believed him. But wait Ronald Reagan was going to make us all prosperous with trickle down economics. How did those two ideas of visions for America turn out?

These two disgusting candidates are well within the tradition of the lying politicians that have dominated elections in America since the very beginning of the nation but we must make a distinction between the lies they tell about Obama and the truths they say about each other because every insult and smear they have said about one another have been true which only proves what repulsive individuals they are.

But the GOP power brokers keep labeling this a close election.
The nominee has not yet been chosen, but they feel comfortable promoting a close vote total.
How can this be?
Out very popular president, who has scored a few victories and whose numbers are rising, will confront one of these two liars. By the time the debates begin, the republican contender will be war weary and battered by the primary process, and yet we are to expect a close election?
Voter suppression efforts are going on in the dark, and we have our free and fair elections on the line.

Oh, that's where we come into the picture. Recall the "Video Your Vote" approach we took in 2008 and let us apply the same tactics to the current problem.

They're saving their best stuff for the general election. Hopefully they'll get caught and punished by the voters.

For quite a while, they were telling the truth about one thing. The record of their opponents. They had no reason to lie, because there was so much to work with. However, it seems like that has gone out the window too.

"The GOP Has Never Before Seen Liars Like Gingrich and Romney"

Really? I don't know about that?

Last I looked the only way Republicans, conservatives and tbaggers ever get elected is by lying and having the media lie for them.

Andy Ostroy,

You're absolutely correct.

What does that say about the so called "liberally bias media"?
What does that say about the Fairness Doctrine?
What does that say about Canada's Radio Act?
What does that say about the importance of protecting the internet?

Andy, thank you for coming our and saying in plain English. Newt is superfluous as far as I'm concerned, but it's very important that people understand Willard Romney's #1 political talent: he will lie about any thing at any time if he feels there is political advantage in doing so. No lie is too great or too shameful. Mitt Romney is a prodigious, incorrigible and pathological liar, with the ability to come up with the most outrageous, outlandish and obvious whoppers with the manic, robotic precision of a machine gun in the hands of a psychopath. Coming from a High Priest of his church, it's very strange indeed.

You say lies, they say telling the audience what they want to hear.

Same thing for the GOP.

These people don't seem to remember that anything they say or do can be checked and researched for validity on the web. Though a lot of voters, don't go through their individual vetting process of these candidates¬, they should, when casting something as important as their vote. Some politicians will say anything to get a vote.

These two individuals have taken the political sphere to never before seen lows. Being hypocritical, immoral, unethical, elitist, 1%ers, and even more damning, simply unqualified to hold the office that their massive egos lead them to think they should be, is not an endearing quality one would want in a leader.

From some of their statements on immigration, health care and minorities among others, and the numerous flip-flops they make, depending on the audience, the country would not be well-served with either.

You're right, Jay. All people have to do is search, and they'll probably find out more than they imagined. (And not good stuff, either).

And as to Newt's complaints of how that Mitt guy is abusing him: Newt instructed GOP candidates (he ran a course) to "Go negative early and never back down."
