The Real Casey Anthony Verdict

Posted: 07/07/11 11:01 AM ET

Casey Anthony may have escaped the death penalty and life in prison, but she no doubt will receive a sentence perhaps even worse: life of scorn. There aren't many people in America who believe Anthony isn't responsible for the brutal death of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee. She simply benefited by the greatest legal system in the world. She may have gotten away with murder in a court of law, but she won't escape the court of public opinion.

Anthony is the new O.J. Simpson. She's the demonic object of our hatred and our frustration with our criminal justice system. It seems that at least once every decade we stand stunned, outraged and nauseated as the verdict is read in an audience-gripping, sensational murder trial as the killer walks free. But that's where the similarities end. In the 1995 O.J. trial, the prosecution not only had bodies -- O.J's ex-wife Nicole Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman -- but clear evidence that they were murdered. There was also motive: O.J.'s tumultuous, violence-marred relationship with Nicole. And there was DNA evidence. Blood everywhere. O.J's, hers, Goldman's. At her place, his house, his car, and on a glove found at his residence. But that wasn't enough. The jury in this case could've had actual videotape of Simpson committing the murders and they likely would have acquitted him still.

In the Anthony case the prosecution had nothing. Nothing but reams of circumstantial evidence. Sure, if you stepped away from it all and looked at it in its totality with a rational, intelligent, common sense perspective, she's as guilty as sin. What loving mother fails to report her toddler missing for 31 days, then lies about it, creates imaginary people whom she blames the death on and, in the process, gets a "Bella Vita" ("Beautiful Life") tattoo and is out partying? We have every reason to believe she killed Caylee and we have every reason to hate her. But unfortunately, the prosecution did not have a motive, witnesses or a cause of death, and you can't convict someone of murder if you can't prove a murder took place. The burden of proof rested solely on the prosecution, and it simply could not prove Anthony's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. No matter how upsetting and painful, no matter how infuriating and sickening the verdict, the system worked. In America, we don't send people to jail because we don't like them or because we're emotional and angry.

But time will not be kind to Casey Anthony. Like O.J. Simpson, she'll face constant animosity, ostracizing and public ridicule. She'll find everyday tasks like grocery shopping filled with vitriol. She'll find it hard to get a job. She'll probably never have a normal, healthy relationship. Perhaps she'll sell a book and do some interviews and make a few bucks, but she'll spend it just as quickly and probably end up destitute. She'll party hard and crash harder. And just like her partner in criminal history, Casey may ultimately end up in jail for some other heinous, despicable act. To be sure, Casey Anthony is not someone who's going to contribute to society in any meaningful way.

Let's hope that she doesn't turn into the next "Kardashian" - someone who is famous for being famous, not talent or actions or deeds; someone famous because they have a big family name (Hilton) or a good publicist (Kardashian's). Alas, I feel that she will wind up with all kinds of deals and offers, meanwhile her daughter is still dead and nobody has offered any credible reason for that, that does not implicate Casey Anthony in her death.

She may have been found "not guilt" but she is FAR from "innocent".

She wasn't found to be innocent, she just wasn't found to be guilty. There is a difference. She would be better off, safe, behind bars. She will never be safe out on the streets. She will need to move out of the country, change her name and her facial features. Her life will never be happy or carefree, look at O.J. he thought that he could get away with murder, where is he spending his free time?

I don;t know that she would be safe in prison. She's been in solitary for the last three years, that's probably her only choice to actually stay safe.

Scorn is merely another form of attention.

Shunning would be more appropriate.

See her on the street, turn away, in a store turn away,
on TV, change the channel. Give her NO attention,
good or bad.

you might be right - scorn could easily turn around in her mind as victimizing her.

It's an interesting premise, that scorn matters that much. I remember a few years after the impeachment scandal, Monica Lewinsky told an interviewer that she would probably have a hard time getting married. "Can you imagine someone bringing me home to meet his parents and introducing me?" she asked.

I'm thinking she'll have to dye her hair, get some plastic surgery, change her name and live anonymously.

Can't imagine that all the angry people that truly despise her are going to calm down that quickly. She'll be far better off under the radar.

Time will tell.

Living anonymously would probably be the worst possible thing for Casey. She thrives on attention, she would probably rather be dead than to not get any. She was even obsessing over the jerks that were writing letters to her in jail, as if that meant anything.

Is this a self-fulfilling prophecy? I hope it isn't. I fear it may be. On July 5, Casey Anthony was handed a stunning second chance, but taking advantage of it won't be easy. She won't have an immediate family to turn to for support, and lots of Americans wish her ill. Thanks to the vitriol of Nancy Grace, someone may even try to kill her. If "past is prologue," Anthony must overcome an extraordinarily bad beginning; moreover, everything she henceforth does and says will become chum for HLN to throw to the bloodthirsty sharks that make up its audience and pump up its ratings. She won't be living under a cloud but in the midst of a malestrom. I can't imagine trying to make my way in the world under similar circumstances. Nonetheless, some people have already emerged to offer her the right kind of help--not the sensationalists who want to trade big bucks for sordid details, but psychologists who have volunteered their services, perhaps a family member in Texas who will take her in. As the verdict was being read on Tuesday, I saw astonishment and gratitude on Anthony's face--evidence that the last three years may have begun to replace her early shallowness with depth. I'm a sucker for underdog stories (Barack Obama, Jose Baez) and stories of redemption (Michael Vick). If Casey Anthony can find a way to live a truly beautiful life, she'll deserve that book deal.

Let's give Nancy Grace a break. She isn't the reason we hate this girl and know she killed her baby. Casey Anthony is the reason we feel this way. Let's not make Casey out to be a victim, because she clearly is not.

I guess I'm one of the "not many" you cite in this completely subjective analysis of a tragedy. I doubt very much that Casey Anthony technically "murdered" her daughter. I think the jury's verdict was the only correct verdict the evidence could produce. The prosecution showed marked stupidity in adding and removing and adding the death penalty in a case where they cannot even prove crime much less murder. By this they gave sympathy to a defendant who inspired no sympathy, herself. I agree that time will not go easy on Casey Anthony. I sincerely hope she does not face a lynch mod. If there is anyone in this stupider than the prosecutor, it is that gang of crazies in front of the court house.

The prosecution charged C.A. with lesser offenses along with the death penalty offense. The jury found her not guilty of those also. http://www.cfnews13.com/article/news/2011/july/273571/Casey-Anthony:-The-charges-against-her

We keep talking about Casey Anthony. We keep talking about the jury and the legal system and the prosecution and defense. Let's change the subject for a moment....Caylee was 2 years old, innocent, and died before her time. The mindset of my family and friends seems to be "someone HAS to pay for this". It's about closure. I'm not a psychologist, not a doctor, not anybody important so please take this with a grain of salt - but when I step back and look at this logically what I see is a nation grieving. Anger is a natural part of this process; so is blame. We don't feel "safe" when things are open ended. I understand the anger, the blame, and the fury related to Caylee's death. I can't change the jury's mind, can't provide more evidence for the prosecution, can't impose my will on the situation. What I think about what happened or who did it doesn't matter. I know that I will not forget Caylee, that I will think of her from time to time and wonder what could've been, what kind of woman she might have been. And I do think I've learned something from this case and from Caylee's death: the people of the United States are still good people, who still have the ability to rise up in one voice and say "not good enough". That matters, because it shows that we still care.

How the hell do you know that Andy ? Would it be more meaningful for her to be on death row ?

"In America, we don't send people to jail because we don't like them or because we're emotional and angry."

I don't know if this always is or always has been the case, but it should be, especially if the jail in question is death row.
11:17 PM on 07/07/2011
If she's the psychopath all the talking heads with no psychology degrees say she is, she'll probably take the life of scorn rather than sit on death row for yrs. and then die by lethal injection. We'll file that prediction with all the others about her future horrible life on the outside.
10:06 PM on 07/07/2011
It's easy to disappear if you decide to. And looking at her life there seems to be nothing preventing her from doing so.

She isn't an OJ whose face which was a media brand and therefore unescapable. Wait a few years change your name hair and disappear.

In short you can believe that if you want to but this girl will disappear if she decides to. Wouldn't be hard at all.

the problen is, she's a high school dropout with no job history, and a very infamous name. It's going to be very hard for her to make it in the world - and we all know she's not interested in working towards a better life - she's looking for the easy way. And that is selling her story and her face. Seriously though, I don't think she has a clue how hated she is in this country. It will be interesting when she gets out tomorrow night.

maybe i'm seeing things wrong...but due the haste of investigation, putting evidence in proper order, and all the other important, proper procedures...i have this ugly feeling that Caylee is nothing more than a "throw away" child, to all concerned !!!!!...this thought makes me sick !!!!!

Leave this woman alone...she was acquitted, rightly or wrongly....the media vitriol is disgusting...it is done and nothing will bring back the little girl
