The Right Wing's Racist Attacks on Michelle Obama

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

2008-08-12-ObamaMichelle.jpg
The shameless right-wing attack machine has figured out that it may be more politically expedient to go over after Michelle Obama with subliminal racist attacks than the Democratic candidate himself. And the racist code word of the day is "angry." What they're trying to do is scare Americans into seeing Michelle Obama as nothing more than an angry black woman who they should fear getting into the White House. It's absolutely disgusting.

We've heard for months now how the wife of the Democratic Party's presumptive nominee for president, Sen. Barack Obama, is unpatriotic and hates her country. That she is not "proud" to be an American. That she believes America to be a "mean" place.

And now she's "angry." Very, very angry. One of the more relentless perpetrators of this reprehensible attack is Sirius Radio's Andrew Wilkow. On his "The Wilkow Majority" show Monday the Sean Hannity wannabe went on a verbal rampage against the "mean-faced," "tough-looking" Obama, saying she was "harboring a whole lot of anger" and that she was "full of rage." So much rage that she has "quivering lips" and a "scowl" when she speaks. And as if that wasn't enough, he railed that "she looks like the kind of woman that would hit her husband with a shoe for talking back." Is this guy for real? If Wilkow would like us to believe that he's not trying very hard to conjure up the racist image of the angry black woman, he is either terribly dumb and naive or thinks we are. Just how does Wilkow know she's "full of rage?" What's he basing this prognosis on? Is he watching the same intelligent, happy family woman that I see plastered all over the TV? I've yet to see even one public display of even a bad mood let alone the sort of "rage" Wilkow refers to. Perhaps it's Wilkow who's the one "full of rage?" Maybe it's Wilkow who "harbors a lot of anger" at the thought of a a black First Family? What's even more outrageous than Wilkow's blatant stereotyping is his claim that his attacks on Michelle Obama "are not personal."

The right wing attack dogs have one goal, and that's to scare the crap of America. "Michelle and Barack Obama. The angry radical black man and his angry black wife. A couple of militants whom Whitey should be very, very afraid of." It's 2004 all over again. But instead of gay marriage it's angry black folk. Let's just hope this time Americans care more about the war, the recession, $4.50/gallon gas prices, unemployment, record debt, the housing slump, the mortgage crisis, universal health care and global warming.

The shameless right-wing attack machine has figured out that it may be more politically expedient to go over after Michelle Obama with subliminal racist attacks than the Democratic candidate himself.

My question is:

Why hasn't all those Hilliary supporters who claim to be sooooo upset over the "sexism", "misogynism" and anti-female sentiments displayed in the primaries by the republicans and democrats, haven't the risen to the defense of Mrs. Obama?

Their silence is deafening

It's simple. They have no interest in defending Mrs. Obama. These hardcore Hillary supporters were and are against Sen. Obama for one reason and one reason only. We all know what that is to.

It's also plays into something else that I've read is a problem in the women's rights movement in relation to white women and non-white women. This is an oversimplification of it of course but it breaks down like this (this isn't a 100% thing of course but a generalization that is playing itself out quite clearly with Hillary's hardcore supporters). Non-white women are for all women. White women are for white women. This is why you rarely if ever see white women come to the defense of a black woman, asian, or hispanic women when a situation Mrs. Obama is in takes place.

The question isn't why her supporters aren't out there fighting against this. The question is why isn't Hillary Clinton herself out there fighting against this or even acknowledging that it is going on? Notice how almost no white female pundits acknowledge these attacks or get offended them. White males, Black males, Black female, etc pundits do however from what I've noticed.

How did this whole Angry Black Woman thing get started anyway? The guys that I work with, think the same thing about me. But I do live in the South.

Southern California (lol)

I try to explain it to them, but I guess it gets lost in translation.

I'm a Liberal, approaching middle age (whatever age that is anymore), white male - and I am kinda leaning towards the 'Angry' side of things as well.

Michelle Obama - you are not alone. And you are not as angry as many of us white boys are either.

Keep on, keepin' on Michelle.

I AM. I SWEAR. lol

Seriously I am. I'm so tired of all this. It's all so sordid, and if anyone calls them on it they point their greedy fingers at the flag pins on their lapels and mumble a platitude and another day goes by. I can't wait til Nov. 4.

And I can't tell you how many times I've been so mad I could spit nails, and at 8:00 I turn on Countdown and drink in a little sanity.

Michelle Obama is not an angry black woman. She is a smart black woman with an opinion and a purpose. Cindy McCain is not a trophy wife but a smart woman also with a purpose.

I never quite understood this line of attack against Michelle. Who is the candidate who is reknown for his "angry outbursts"?

Yes. Everytime I see Michelle I can tell she just came from a Black Panther's meeting. Stokley Carmichael beams from her eyes. She starred in the hit show "Leave It To Eldridge Cleaver". Blah blah blah.

This is so silly. And it's cheap - is that all they've got? Attacking a nice woman who got herself educated, married a good man, is raising two daughters and made one statement (that anybody with a brain knew what she was getting at) and so now the Republicans are going to show their Patriotic manhood by beating the snot out of a perfectly nice American woman?

I hope the american do not fall for the same old character assassination by the Republican party. They have nothing to offer except the same old things that has bankrupted this country.

And she did the "terrorist fist bump" with her black Muslim commie husband whose middle name is Hussein. Thank God Fox news pointed that out! We could have elected a terrorist!

The same old tactics from the same old players. I really hope we don't fall for this crap again. If we do, we deserve what we get.

may I suggest that you get your new from a more reputable source. Try the Wall Street Journal. The name Hussein is one of the most used names in the middle east. I have a German name but I am not a Nazi.

Don't be afraid, it is part of the Republicans plan to control you. Just like any dictator or zealot. We need people like yourself to search out the truth, read a little more.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:47 PM on 08/13/2008

I like her very much. Strong, intelligent, and attractive. There was an interview of BO once and someone asked him why he choose Michelle. He said "Have you seen my wife? She's fine!" When any woman who has as much as she has going for her and a husband that beams at the mere mention of her name, where is the anger?

She's serious, she's tough, she's smart- all the qualities that make weak people worry

And on a lighter note, any man who would say "have you seen my wife/girlfriend/so? She is fine" ....... would have had any of us romantics at "HELLO":):) He is so respecttful of Michelle (as she is of him). It is so obvious that they are deeply in love - certainly not the fake stuff we've seen in the past. Which is neither here nor there politically - just something to admire. She sure as heck doesn't look angry to me. I remember giving one of her first lengthy speeches in the campaign - her devotion and her intent is so very clear. Her entire face lights up with passion for a vision of a better America. Anger is what the Repugs wish they could see on her face.
