By most accounts, the Internet was born back on October 29, 1969 by two researchers, Vint Cerf  and Robert Kahn.  Cerf is now Google's Chief Internet Evangelist.

In April 2008, I interviewed Cerf in New York at the Personal Democracy Forum.  We have republished the video today.  Very interesting perspective on bandwidth, access and online video consumption.

For more on the big day, see Quentin Hardy's piece in Forbes and this article by Oliver Burkeman in the Guardian of London.
