If you were to read only the national coverage of the three-way race for the U.S. Senate in Florida, you would think it is a solid "red" state and that a true representative of the middle class and progressive values is unelectable. But in a state famous for close elections, and a history of electing solid Democratic Senators, the reality is far different.

You may have read that the current favorite, the original darling of the Tea Party, Marco Rubio, has demonstrated a fundraising prowess cannot be matched. Or maybe you've read that Gov. Charlie Crist is the only plausible way to stop a Rubio victory; the rationale used by Gov. Crist to explain why he left the Republican Party rather than lose the primary.

But there is one candidate, too often overlooked by the pundits and ignored by the "experts," who has built a career in public service by standing for middle-class families over powerful corporate interests, whose environmental record cannot be questioned, whose grassroots organizing is unparalleled and has stood with the progressive community time and again.

No equivocating, no wavering, no calculating.

That candidate is Kendrick Meek.

Hasn't the Tea Party taught us that wringing your hands and making compromises is not how we win? Is a candidate who was on the short list for John McCain's Vice-President really a chance that people who want to keep the middle class strong want to take?

Have we lost faith in ourselves to the point we now believe a strategic, financed, people driven grassroots campaign can't counter Rubio's right-wing fundraising?

Kendrick Meek has earned the endorsement of progressive groups like SEIU, the AFL-CIO, HRC, People for the American Way and NARAL. He is the only candidate who believes we should eliminate Bush's tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans, opposed offshore drilling (even before the BP spill), stood up for middle-class tax cuts, an increased minimum wage and protections against Wall Street's tricks and traps.

Compare that to Marco Rubio. Known for his extreme political philosophy, he has voiced support for privatizing Social Security and still supports the Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy. Oh, and he wants to repeal healthcare reform, return us to the gold standard and does not accept scientific evidence for global warming. Seriously!

Charlie Crist? He is quite adaptable if it can advance his political career. He's fighting first for one thing - his political survival. He was against healthcare reform before he was for it, before he was against it. He said he would save the Everglades, but then made it easier for big developers to drain them. Crist claims he fights for workers while promising to continue tax breaks for corporations that ship Florida jobs overseas. He has switched his stance on a wide range of important issues-from gay marriage to immigration reform, and from a woman's right to choose to offshore oil drilling.

Why would voters and people in Washington not think he wouldn't just switch on anything else if he thinks it is to his political advantage?

And don't we appreciate that the road to re-electing President Obama in 2012 will run through key states such as Florida, and necessitates progressives to be engaged. A progressive voice and an electoral victory for the middle class can only help President Obama.

We have three options. One - let Tea Partier Marco Rubio take his extreme views to D.C. Two - hope Charlie Crist will be struck by lightning and somehow forgets his lifelong conservative Republican past. Or, we can go all-in for a true progressive, Kendrick Meek. Why would we settle for less?

No one has a crystal ball to tell you if and how we can win every race. But just ask Mike Castle or Lisa Murkowski that passion and organizing does matter now more than in most elections.

But I was honored to lead one of the country's most active progressive organizations trying to keep the American Dream alive. And what my years as President of SEIU taught me was that if we step up and stand strong with those who have stood with us, we can never be counted out.

So I look forward to you joining me in working, donating, and encouraging everyone you know to help elect Kendrick Meek to the United States Senate this November.

This is all well and good, Andy. But, even in a Rubio/Meek two-way race, Meek cannot win. The choice is whether we have a moderate that we can work with (and very likely caucus with) or an anti-gay, anti-gubment, anti-choice creep whose core philosophies will work to undermine the interests of his constituents while using them as a set of stepping stones to bring his radical agenda closer to the White House.

It is shameful that the statist media will only present the two party candidates(including independent)especially failing to provide readers with important information regarding the respective candidates credibility and honesty.

We have another choice for Senate; Alexander Andrew Snitker.

NATIONAL NEWS... On November 2nd when Alex Snitker gets his 369,808th vote, he will become the 'greatest vote receiver' for a Libertarian U.S. Senate candidate in history!!!

Now, that's 'true political progress' for America! Help it happen, by voting for 'Honest' Alex for Florida U.S. Senate on November 2nd!

Andy, it looks like your heart is in the right place, but when you begin with an incorrect situation summary, your outcome is skewed. This is a FOUR-WAY race, not a 3-way. Alexander Snitker, Libertarian candidate polls significantly, on those rare occasions when the liberal media include his name. Case in point:
NaplesNews poll as of this writing:
Rubio 40% / Snitker 29% / Crist 23% / Meek 1%
In the Orlando Sentinel poll, Snitker was at 60% last I checked.
And, your criteria for choosing a federal candidate should be their willingness to abide by the US Constitution.
I'm voting for Alex Snitker - he signed the pledge to abide by the Consitution (the others refuse to), and he has no dark cloud of scandal over his head (unlike the other three). www.snitker2010.com

You're wondering why liberals aren't supporting Meek. It's because he has no chance of winning. He was running double digits behind Rubio even in a two-way race. Crist entering as an Independent gives the Democrats at least some chance of keeping the seat out of Republican hands. If Crist wins, the Democrats can put this one in the victory column because he's going to caucus with the Dems. Unfortunately we can't pick a true blue liberal in this race. It's either an Independent who will caucus with the Dems in Crist or a Tea Party conservative in Rubio. Your article should be about why Meek dropping out and endorsing Crist would be in the best interests of progressives.

If Charlie would have won the Repub senate nomination, he would be just as far right as credit card fraud Rubio. He ran to the RIGHT of Rubio before he gave up the primary fight. Charlie's a phony, in more ways than one.

I live in Florida and voted for Meek in the primary. He is becoming more popular by the day - as his TV ads focus on his record and his plan - unlike his opponents, who are tar and feathering each other on the political low-road. He is, by far, the best candidate in the race. I hope ever-progessing Floridians give him their vote.

I'm voting for Meek also.

I heard him speak and he is BY FAR the most qualified of the 3. I don't trust Christ and Rubio is a nightmare. GOOD LUCK, FLORIDA!!!

Andy, we're going to send Crist back to the shrimp boat he came off of, and Mr. Meek has way to much dirty Laundry. Marco is the only one with any credibility. So much so that many liberals are voting for him.

Yeah?  Hows that federal investigation going? Seems to me, Rubio lives beyond his pay grade.

Whatever.  Rethugs love thieves.
08:45 PM on 09/30/2010
Because their God's candidates. When God tells you to vote Republican, what choice do you have? If God wants the credit card thief elected Senator and the Medicare Fraud guy govenor, who are we to question his wisdom?

Credibility? Seriously? Now he's trying to shrug off his involvement in the "Taj Mahal" courthouse after paying that pesky credit card bill he thought he could get away with. Get real, raising SS age to 70 shows he is a typical anti middle class politician. Maybe liberal right wingers are voting for him. Makes sense, they don't know and don't care.

I'm sorry, but I have to vote for Crist. My decision was sealed when I learned that, just a month before the election, Meek is polling at less than 20%. And while Rubio has a double-digit lead over Crist, it's clear Crist is his only real competition in this race.

And I absolutely, unequivocally, cannot risk Rubio representing my state in the Senate. In fact, I just ordered a bumper sticker and yard signs for Crist, now that I've made my decision.

If you really want Meek, and you really don't want Rubio, How did you decide on Crist? ILLogical.
Vote Meek, The machine won't count your vote anyway!

Andy, Andy, Andy, nice try. Charley is no Republican, he's a progressive! Yes, for everyones knowledge, there are Progressives in both parties. So you really do have a choice between two Progressives and one conservative.

Um, in what world is Charlie a progressive? I've not minded the job he's done as governor, but he's too hard to pin down on so many important issues that I'm just not certain what I'd be getting by voting for him. And Rubio is obviously not an option to anyone with an ounce of common sense.

I think he is the lesser of the two evils.  He may not be exactly progressive, but he doesn't sound REGRESSIVE like Rubio.

It is too bad Meeks wasn't personable enough to pull this off.  That's mostly what I have heard from Florida Dems- Meeks has no charisma and could put you to sleep.

Too bad Grayson didn't run for the seat- that would have been a heck of a campaign!
09:42 AM on 09/30/2010
The only problem here is that Meek has little chance of winning against either Rubio or Christ. I am going to vote for Christ because he has the best chance to beat Rubio. What a sad state of affairs.

I think if Christ were running, he'd win hands-down in Florida. But it's actually Crist that's running, and his chances are a lot less certain than Christ's.

Rubio will win easily and become a star in the right wing galaxy. He is as phony as a three dollar bill but has the backing of big corporate interests and will put a new face on the same vicious policies.
