Angry White Women

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Since it became clear that Hillary Clinton would likely bow out of the race for the Democratic nomination for president, the dominant narrative has been the angry white women who are holding back from Barack Obama. Some even suggest that John McCain can make a major play for these disaffected Clinton supporters. The problem with this narrative is that it is mostly wrong, ignoring history and failing to understand Obama's real challenge among women voters.

No doubt, there are some Clinton supporters who currently find it difficult to contemplate supporting Obama, but most of these women are highly engaged, progressive Democratic voters; it is difficult to imagine them ultimately supporting McCain, who has a career-long, anti-woman record.

In fact, Obama is actually doing better than John Kerry with women voters; Kerry won them by 3 points, and according to polling from Democracy Corps research, Obama is currently winning them by 6 points. Obama's improvement over Kerry comes among college educated and younger women -- the most progressive voters in the electorate.

Obama's real struggle is with white blue collar women voters -- the same group that challenged Kerry. Currently, Obama trails McCain among white women without a college education by 19 points, 37 to 56 percent; according to Democracy Corps, Kerry lost these women by the exact same margin, 40 to 59 percent. Some argue that Clinton solved this problem because of her performance with white older women in the Democratic Party. But not only is it a mistake to extrapolate from primary results to the general election, Clinton would also likely lose to McCain among white women without a college education, albeit by a smaller margin.

The key to reaching these women voters is two-fold. First, Obama needs to communicate with them about who he is, including his values and his life story. He and his family actually have more in common with these women than they know. Second, he needs to address their real economic anxieties. As I noted in the American Prospect in 2004, Kerry actually led George Bush with older white women when his campaign was talking about healthcare, retirement and other domestic economic issues. But when he allowed the issue terrain to shift to Iraq and security at the expense of his economic message, he lost ground.

The economic situation is even more tenuous for these women today, with rising gas prices exacerbating their financial squeeze. John McCain has a history of opposing the very policies that would help these women -- including opposing pay equity and raising the minimum wage -- and supporting policies that are unlikely to appeal to these voters such as tax cuts for the wealthy and privatization schemes for health care and Social Security.

McCain is not going to win over women who supported Clinton in the primary and Obama can certainly improve his chances of beating McCain in the general election if he makes inroads among non-college educated white women voters. He can do so by offering a personal narrative that reflects shared values and a family background that's far from the elitist he is alleged to be, and delivering an economic message that highlights specific proposals designed to help ease the daily financial pressures of white working class women.

Since it became clear that Hillary Clinton would likely bow out of the race for the Democratic nomination for president, the dominant narrative has been the angry white women who are holding back from...

There is a winner and a loser in every election. So long as the contest is a fair fight I'm willing to accept any outcome. But, I am angry and depressed because the primary was not a remotely fair fight. The liberal media took sides and became players, not observers, and ganged up on Hillary along with the conservative media. What is harder to reconcile is that the Democratic Party leaders ganged up on Hillary as well and Obama got a pass. Add to the mix the unfair party rules for assigning delegates.

The result is I am grieving the profound loss of fairness within the party and it has killed any hope of my getting into the fray on behalf of Democrats. Think of it as a divorce. I just fell out of love with the Democratic Party and especially liberals after 40 years.

Me too. It's been a bitter and final divorce for me. I think they assume we have no where else to go so eff us. They may be in for a big surprise come November. Especially with the continuing vicious sexism (check out the responses to the Curic article). Every time I think I'm not quite so angry, I see posts from the Obama supporters and the vicious sexism and hypocrisy pushes me right over the edge again. Let's face it, the jerks here don't care if we walk away or not. Sure they want our votes, but they treat us with utter contempt. I for one (and I think there are many thousands just like us) am sick of them and of being taken for granted. About the only thing that would make me reconsider is if Obama offers the VP slot to her. But that's very unlikely, especially if his supporters have anything to say about it.

Sadly, I am sad to see you go. I wish you well. I find it "highly unlikely" that the VP will be a place for HRC.

But, please read the note below that is a quote from HRC herself

You know, all it takes is one or two people to respond who see through the same sober humanistic perspective and it makes it more palatable. I think Hillary in her concession speech did a great job speaking to this dissatisfaction you touch on. She helped me move on. (Unlike the annoying, patronizing posts of conscioushope.)

Things like this turn back on themselves -- who'd have thought that Gore would emerge all the stronger when he conceded? He's more of a legitimate world leader than Bush could ever hope to be!

There is no other VP contender who could automatically pull in millions of votes. It's a numbers game -- 18 million for her, 18 million for him. A) How many of the 18 million votes for Clinton will still vote Democrat? B) If they join forces, how many votes will be lost out of their 36 million combined by voters who hate the other?

The difference between A and B gives you the likelihood of Clinton joining the ticket.

One way to look at this -- Clinton as veep would absorb a lot of the hits from the Republicans.

Your threats are wasted here. If we are surprised in November, so be it, but at least we can begin to rid the part of the gangsters who would seek to hold the party hostage if they don't get their way. Hillary lost, so too bad, so sad. You can vote for the person who at least agrees with your issues or you can vote for the person who does not agree with your issues. Seems like a no brainer, but if you can't wrap you head around it, you can and should vote for someone else.

I just can't figure out why pollsters, no less, like this one can't figure out what we already know full well. It is not merely a two-party system and we can very easily write in Hillary Clinton.

I certainly plan to do that. And show everyone how it's done.

No one has explained to me what the point is supposed to be between choosing between two bad Ideas and why I'd want to denigrate my vote by using it on either one of them.

The Obomabots can start foaming at the mouth, but every time they do they don't just harden our resolve to not to be part of the bleating flock, but make this party myth look even more divisive in a country so totally fed up with partisan agendas and entitlement. It's the ones that are reading and not responding that will make the difference.

.

What this pollster should be asking is why she thinks any of us should be loyal to the Democratic Party?
When was it loyal to us and how loyal was it to the Clintons?
Why Hillary Clinton would even blink for them is beyond me.

In November that loss will be blamed on her.
Because no one will admit that when you foist an unsuitable candidate that no one in the Flyover will ever relate to no matter what, on a public that would rather vote in Bush TWICE than go for someone like Dean or Kerry, fat chance with Obama.

Losing doesn't mean the fight was unfair. Hillary had more advantages than any primary candidate in Democratic history, including Gore, Mondale, Humphrey, and JFK. All the connections, money, and influence of a popular two-term ex-president, plus his relentless, daily commitment to her cause. The "liberal media?" What liberal media? They bought into Hillary's inevitability meme early and often. It's true that they were eager to dance on her grave after Iowa, but when she eked out a win in NH, they went overboard to give her campaign credibility that it didn'y have.

You talk about fairness when it was Hillary and her supporters on the DNC rules committee (including the redoubtable Ickes) who voted UNANIMOUSLY to strip MI and FL of ALL their delegates back in August, then a few months later mounted an absurdly hypocritical and hyperventilated pr campaign about "disenfranchisement," even comparing FL with Zimbabwe!

Hillary lost because her mistakes overwhelmed her huge advantages. She didn't bother to try to win the nomination, instead triangulating for years on issues like the Iraq War and the bankruptcy bill, aiming for a November electorate. If those are her values, fine, she's a warmongering conservative. If they're not, she's a cynical hypocrite.

The Democratic Party is as strong as its weakest link. You are a weak link and even though I think you are misinterpreting the situation, I am happy to see you leave the Party.

The Dems need a strong base of loyal citizens that will vote based on who represents our issues as opposed to who you like the best. We want a strong coalition that will not threaten to take their vote if things don't go their way. We want people who can analyze and vote for what is best for the country, for everyone, not just for themselves

I wish you well on the Dark Side...May the force be with you.

Obamabots can linger in la-la land all they want with their collective heads in the sand, but your unity candidate has a big problem with huge blocks of voters in his own party. This is why he lost by huge margins in some of the final primary states. He should have sprinted across the finish line. He didn't. He was carried across by his superdelegate cronies. Come November, we will be looking at another Democrat delivering yet another concession speech.

And the beat goes on! I agree with whoever said it isn't a question of O or H, it's a question of war, economy and a sinking America. I do not see Hillary as VP - two powerful women, H and Michelle? Oops! I do see her as Secretary of State however able to mend fences in ways that are vital. We are isolated and that is sad as there is awhole world out there willing to receive someone who is educated, knowledgeable about many issues, can be charming and able to mix with all people. I think she is a natural in the global environment, another Al bright perhaps/? By the way, did you see the video of the 13 year old girl who addreassed the UN on ecology? ? Outstanding. When I read some of the real vitriol on this blog, I think of her. She cited we grownups telling her and her age group, how they should behave, not hurt anyone, be able to share. It was brilliant and I believe ever;yone who has spewed out s uch venom should watch this child. BTW - I was raised in a war, bombed out of our home as a child. With all those who support Mr. McCain and have not experienced it, think about it. It could happen anywhere!

If OIL continues to be the bear it has been on the American markets, we can continue to see more people foreclosed on and less expendable income. There are VERY serious indications that are emerging which point to full blown DEPRESSION. When are employers going to step up and match OPEC? Wages are not rising with the cost of living. Period. OPEC has CLEARLY ignored and really has stuck us good the past 7 years. We, as a nation, must press for a more comprehensive mass transit options. And if we go, lets go BIG with magnetic rails where trains can top whatever speed an airliner can do. It would be paid for by reinstating a FAIR tax on the richest folks in this country. Ending the war and subsequently (and easily) slash the defense budget by 150 billion dollars. We shouldn't sit on this idea. It NEEDS to be done. In the end OPEC won't be able to jam on us with a broom handle.

Sorry, Gruntfuttock: HRC is a valuable asset to our party and our country, but, I could never see her as Secretary of State. She would be viewed with suspicion throughout the world as a Bush crony, who had enthusiastically supported him in his zeal to invade Iraq and refused to admit that she had made a mistake. I also feel she should not be given the VP slot. Sen. Obama MUST have utmost trust in his closest advisors and I believe that the Clintons would overtly and covertly work to discredit and undermine his presidency.

I do, however, think she would be fantastic in a cabinet post that would allow her to work for universal health care and/ or women's and children's issues. She deserves praise for her had work in those areas all these years, and I think she should be able to take (and be given) credit for her role when universal health care becomes law.

Although I am an enthusiastic Obama supporter, I have always admired Sen. Clinton for her work in helping less fortunate Americans. I hope she will eventually regain the respect and trust that she lost during this primary race.

I love how all the Obama supporters -- so hysterical during the primary with their harsh vitriol against Clinton politics -- are now trying to say how SIMILAR they are to prevent this backlash.
I will stand with Obama. I do like Obama's ideology. Cannot stand most of his supporters tho. During the primary I found the majority - and on HuffPo nearer to the totality - to be shrill, immature, bombastic, misogynistic, conspiracy-spouting knee-jerkers. What a shame. Now of course it's a different tune. Highly suspect if you ask me.
But life under McCain would be too unfortunate.
I would like to see some in the media and in the Obama campaign staff and of the supporters to all take a deeper - and hopefully less subjective - review of the ways in which Hillary has been unfairly, grotesquely demonized and try to make amends. It might be a little easier as the outrageous and unfair vitriol is beginning to turn itself now onto Obama.
Because of the record turnout of Democrats and grumblings against the war, I thought we had this election in the bag. However if McCain reaches out to disgruntled Hillary supporters and as specualted selects a woman to be his running mate such as Governor Sarah Palin... a strategic move like that could prove truly catastrophic.

For me , what it comes down to is if my vote will help mcain stay out of the white house, I will break down and vote for him. That is, if my vote even counts... With all the shenannigans of the past few elections, I sometimes wonder. If the election is already decided by the time my state votes(CA) I am sticking with "MY GAL HIll") and writing her in.. She may not have been in the actual war room, she may not be a warm fuzzy for the media, but She is very bright, I beleive very caring and even Candy Crowley had to admit she had never seen ANY candidate work like she did. I could have told her that, being Sen Hillary is a woman !

I have nothing against Obama - however Obama supporters are something else again.I think their comeuppance will come tho' if he becomes president and proves himself to outtriangulate the Clintons. I worry that since they see everything he says or does iabove reproach, that he could go very center to right very quickly before there is resistence.
I worry that since he is seen as the solution , organizations that have been built to ensure
civil liberties, peace, & racism etc will fail for funding. It is a democracy and one man is incapable of achieving much on his own , unless we want another GWB type of executive.

It's very unlike me to not be completely loyal, but this is an emotional thing and it's very strong and articles like this just make me more angry. It's just another way to dismiss women. You are dismissing yourself, your value and your future.

If you thought in terms of race and not just gender, perhaps you would feel differently. It is the same script for black men and women as for white women.

It's been a long fight to be able to sit at the table...for all but white men. Fortunately things have been changing.

I hope you get over your emotions...some issues are too important to decide emotionally.

In terms of personal responsibility, your candidate will have to take this one as her own. She miscalculated and mispoke when it really counted.
Yes, nasty things were said based on gender but they were said based on race as well and this is sadly the stuff of politics. It is how we endure these things that matter.

Every vote counts. It makes no sense to condemn my children to the kind of future that a McCain administration can surely bring to this country. Your candidate paved the way for more women in the future. McCain will negate the work your candidate fought for.
Hillary Clinton is not giving up the fight for her country, you shouldn't either. A vote for McCain is a vote against Hillary Clinton's chances in the future. She will be blamed for Obama losing the election because people will say that she "poisoned the well". That would lessen her chance of getting into the national spotlight in the future.

My candidate did not pave the way for more women in the future. She proved that society is not ready for a woman president. Maybe the voters are, but the media and the politicians are not. The next woman will be treated the same way. When it happens to enough women, then they'll stop trying, at least until people mature. Maybe another hundred years.

You are right though, she will be blamed when he loses the election. Too damn bad.

If you vote for McCain, please keep in mind that Hillary will become irrelevant in the future - if she can't lead her supporters to vote Democratic this time, the party will see no use for her. And you surely know McCain won't give her any positions in her White House. If it's Hillary you care about, you'll vote for Obama. If it's spite, think what the next four years will be like. We may have survived 8 years of Bush, but who knows how battered those of us that make under $250K will be under McCain. Please don't vote out of spite - Hillary isn't being a sore loser, please follow her lead.

Teritt, Hillary will never become irrelevant and nobody expects her to be able to absolutely control her followers. I do care about Hillary, but I care about this country more. I know they are the same on issues, but they are light years apart on HOW they would get things done. Not to mention I don't know who this very liberal guy is, but I know he lacks experience. It's true that voting is an emotional thing, but it's extremely immature to let one's emotions trump one's ideals and self-interest. if you actually had any reasons for voting for Hillary--like her stands on health care, global warming, education, the economy, for example--why not look at McCain and Obama and vote for the candidate who most closely approximates Hillary's positions?

In other words, was your support of Hillary based on fandom or judgment? Would you have supported her if she wanted to repeal Roe v. Wade, wanted to stay in Iraq "for a hundred years", and opposed universal health care? Then go ahead and vote for McCain.

So, in 2008 they want to make the same mistakes. Hummmmmm. Well, go on. I guess some people don't learn from their mistakes.

We are one paycheck away from losing it all. We do own homes and we still pay attention to what's going on. As the man said "we are what we've been waiting for." I think Democrats need to forget about winning over any women who would vote for McCain over Obama. There is a clear choice here - war vs peace, corporations vs individuals, environment vs profit, "who's your daddy?" vs educational and health care opportunity, Roe vs Wade.

What Democrats need to do now is educate young people on the differences between the parties, how the candidates will actually effect them (war, education, environment) and how much their vote matters. What the words left wing liberal really mean http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leftismm). Lets grow the party by recruiting new liberals, not by reinventing ourselves as centrists. Intelligent, energetic young people deserve to see a clear way that they can contribute their massive energy and idealism. Obama has been a genious at tapping into this. Now progressives need to help him out by talking to every young person we know about the specific differences between the parties and between the candidates. We can't recruit anyone by pandering to the center. We have to PANDER TO THE LEFT! Don't worry about the "older white working class women" - I am one, and I will tell you that our minds are already made up one way or the other. The disenchanted youth want something to believe in, not politics as usual. There are millions of young people who have never voted because they cannot see a clear difference between the parties. Lets illuminate the differences, not try to cloud them with centrist BS.

I am also an angry white woman. I am angry at all the angry white women who can't move on from Hillary's self-induced campaign debacle. I have been for Obama from the beginning and I'm from Alabama to boot. I suggest that all you A.W.W.'s move past your angst, racial prejudice or whatever has got your panties in a wad, and vote for Obama. It's that or the further, very fast and steady decline of our country under McCain.

A coalition of the willing and able, of the capable and competent, of the aware and alert, of the progressive and perceptive, of the tolerant and talented, of the hopeful and helpful, of the energetic and enthusiastic, of the dynamic and determined, of the people who are fed up with Republican wreckage of one thing after another and believe that a real change can happen, that it won't be business as usual and the poor get poorer, and the very rich get obscenely rich and almighty, arrogant powerful. This is not about demographics, it is about personality and psychology, about kinds of people, rather than types according to the pollsters. There are people who are afraid and disappointed and suspicious, and angry and nasty and looking a the glass crumbling in their fist, never mind half empty, and there are the people looking for fresh springs and using their hands to cup a taste of pure, clear, refreshment of the spirit in a political movement capable of doing something beneficial for most people. The poor have to know clearly what is in it for them in dollars and cents, how their lives will be improved in specific social, medical, educational, transport, community services. If Obama means what he says, he has got to spell this out and get the message to the people convincingly so they see he is not going to do the usual Clinton type deal with the power-brokers.

Gadfly55 - What's Obama going to do...

...when he has to deal with the power brokers of the Dem party who turned on Clinton when the media decided Obama was their man?

If he wants to win he'll have to expose the MSM lies, explicitly and repeatedly. Think they'll let him do it. The "Swiftboating" has already begun. Let's see how the MSM respond to them.

If white women are tired of being disrespected marginalized victims of sexism, I suggest they go home and tell the perpetrators (their husbands, fathers, brothers and sons) to stop.

If Obama wants to earn the vote of a fair number of those white women without a college education who are strongly against him, "telling them who he is" won't cut it. For one thing, where would they see his message? CNN? MSNBC? PBS??? I doubt it.

No, if he wants to snag those votes, he needs to get a couple of cameo roles on the soaps. Or better yet, persuade Jerry Springer to find two obese white women who will beat the crap out of each other over the favors of a skinny black guy who claims to be Obama's second cousin.

A not so very angry, college educated, white woman here. I'd like to point out that no registered Democrat owes Obama a vote. Votes are earned, not demanded. Obama has failed to earn nearly 50% of the Democratic party. And you plan to rectify that by insulting the same people you will need in November? Interesting tactic. Do let me know how that works out for you.

The talking heads claim we'll all fall in line because we're all good Democrats. What a crock. Please note that they are using McCain supporters in 2000 as an example. Republicans vote for the party, Democrats vote for the candidate. Obama voted for the Bush tax cuts. He also had Democrats removed from the rolls of eligable voters during his run for senate in chicage. I will not ever support someone who doesn't fight for every single vote.

What the HELL are you talking about. Let's get to the point. If you don't like the way the country is running now. They your really gonna hate the next 4-8 years of John McCain. HRC & BO are not that far apart on the issues, so why all the jibber jabber.

Since you are a college educated white women, then I'm sure you'll understand this. EITHER YOU VOTE FOR CHANGE, OR YOU CONTINUE TO LET AMERICA ROT. The choice is yours. And that goes for everyone, White, Black, Hispanic, Amercan Indian, Aisan, Etc, Etc.......

NOBama, I agree

Just how much Senate experience does Barack Obama have in terms of actual work days? Not much!

From the time Barack Obama was sworn in as a State Senator to the time he announced he was forming a Presidential exploratory committee, he logged 143 days of experience in the Senate. That's how many days the Senate was actually in session and working.

After 143 days experience, who, in their right mind, would vote for him for President?

I will sit this one out!!!!!!!!1

Geez... HRC also "failed to earn" 50% of the Democratic party! Get a grip!!! "Obama voted for the Bush tax cuts"??? HRC VOTED FOR THE WAR!!! They've both had their voting boo-boos, but they both have progressive principles, and that's what this country desperately needs! I am ASTONISHED that ANYONE would vote to willingly hand our government over to the republicans!!!

I find all this banter back and forth about people not voting for Obama for his politics and yet Hillary he agreed on 95 percent of the issues affecting American people. We have just gone through 7 and half years of the worst administration on record, President consistently lying to the American people, pretending to care issues that affect working class people, and now we have a candidate who wants to truly address those head on and people on the blog talking about voting Green party or voting McCain. This election should be about cleaning out the scum in the White House who could care less about the people who are suffering in the country. Barack Obama may not be the answer, but he is willing to ask the right questions, and that is more than we have have had in years. Just to be clear every point of view that differs from a conservative issue is not always liberal. Being conservative is not the defacto standard mode of thought for those who have to struggle everyday.A fresh approach to old problems in this country is needed, and I hope that Barack gets the opportunity to get his hands dirty to help make these changes.

Barack has the same amount of experience as ol Abe Lincoln had. His gift is surrounding himself with competent people. How on earth do you think he upset Hillary? I think it's irresponsible for anyone to "sit it out" or vote for McSame.
