Annabelle Gurwitch has returned to writing social commentary following a short sabbatical during which time the economy went south. Was it related. Maybe? Her comedic memoir about marriage, “You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up,” will be published by Crown, Valentines Day, 2010.. In her spare time, she’s been hosting her second season of WA$TED, a carbon foot printing series on Planet Green, a Discovery Channel and sending copies of her book and documentary, Fired! to unemployed and underemployed folks around the country. She has essays in two new anthologies, Note to Self (Simon and Schuster) and Rejected (Villard). More info than you’d need can be found at annabellegurwitch.com.

The Other March Madness

Posted March 22, 2009 | 03:32 PM (EST)

"We're mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore!" That's the phrase news anchor Howard Beale intoned in Paddy Chayevsky's prescient satirical movie, Network, made back in 1973. Watch it now and you'd think it was filmed last week. Everyone is up in arms about...

Goldilocks and a Nation of Bears

Posted March 6, 2009 | 04:22 PM (EST)

Last night, as per usual since my pension plan became a 401 no-K at all, I was lying awake considering the possible scenarios for my families future. On the one hand, we could turn our backyard into a coffee plantation, sell our product to neighborhood frugalistas who are still p.c....

How My $1,500 is Going to Rescue the American Economy

Posted February 14, 2008 | 05:59 PM (EST)

Last week, the Congress approved an economic stimulus package that should send approximately $1,500 dollars to my family. Wow, what to do with it? My first thought was to sock it away, but I read that saving the money won't help stimulate the economy and I want to do my...

More Money, Les Moonves

Seen, heard and observed on the picket line in Los Angeles as the Writers Guild of America strike enters its second week:

Too much enthusiasm: Writers picketing in Che Guevara T-shirts
Too little enthusiasm: Writers picketing with Blackberries and cell phones

Too much fun: Walking the line with everyone...

All Trick, No Treat

Posted October 31, 2007 | 08:59 PM (EST)

Last Halloween, I corralled my son into making a blatantly left-wing statement. We went out trick-or-treating dressed as hobos carrying homemade signs that read respectively, "Will Work for Healthcare Benefits" and "Brother Can you Spare a Million?" Oh, how our neighbors laughed and showered us with candy, which I judiciously...

I Hate Happiness

Posted October 3, 2007 | 09:50 PM (EST)

This just in: according to two new studies measuring the happiness index, women are less happy than we used to be and markedly more disgruntled than men. Speculation has been that this study confirms what most of my friends and I experience as the current state of postfeminist feminism. Between...

I was sitting on a plane Tuesday, flipping through the channels on my seatback TV: makeover show, makeover show, home decorating tips, CNN breaking news story on a fire, Maria Bartiromo has great hair.

Wait a minute. Gee, that CNN shot looked familiar.

I flipped back. It was my neighborhood....

Light Up a Fat One and Just Say No to Survivor Next Week

I admit it. I am not immune to the lurid lure of reality TV. My all-time favorite show so far was The Starlet. Call it an occupational hazard, but on the two occasions that I tuned in, I couldn't take my eyes off of it and I have never laughed...

Former Boldface Name Reduced to Regular Font!

Posted April 27, 2006 | 02:53 PM (EST)

A few days ago, I opened my New York Times to the spot which used to be occupied by the admittedly silly, vacuously addictive but frequently entertaining column known as Boldface Names only to see -- it was still gone. In its place was an article about the former EPA...

We're Praying For You

Posted April 14, 2006 | 02:20 PM (EST)

The initial wave of flowers delivered to mark the birth of my son bore cards that read, "We can't wait to meet him." As word of the dire condition in which he arrived into this world spread, a second wave of cards arrived announcing, "we're praying for you."
