What I Learned from Exploring 'Beginnings' (PHOTOS)

Posted: 10/22/10 09:49 AM ET

I saw a photograph of a bird's nest, which was an advertisement for what I thought was a photographic exhibition at a small gallery in Sydney. When I arrived, it was a showing of real birds' nests. I was deeply moved by these little nests, their incredible beauty and fragility, and the mothering instinct at work -- the ingenuity and energy channeled into creating a safe place to conceal the young. Everything about them was just so nurturing. And I began to think about these miracles of nature that are concealed in a repeating pattern of secrete, store, burst forth in abundance -- seeds, bulbs, cocoons and the miracle of pregnancy.

When I saw the nests, everything began to flow again; everything came back. I felt inspired to start photographing again. I came out of the exhibit and phoned my husband, Kel, and said, "I need to do another book. I just saw these amazing nests." The whole "Beginnings" project started from there.

The creative intensity of the project pushed me into deeper and deeper territory, giving me something far richer than I could ever have anticipated. I sometimes had to change course within my vision. I think you have to be able to say, "Wait a minute, this is closer to what I wanted to say," and not be afraid to do that. The evolution of the project attracted me as an artist and was fulfilling in the sense that I became aware of being inspired to explore my vision in new forms.

I have been so totally humbled and touched by the level of trust people shared with me -- all the parents who shared their precious newborns and the pregnant women who came to my studio at a vulnerable time in their lives -- and the numbers of people who so want to be involved in the type of photography that I am pursuing, the art that I am creating. I found that very gratifying.

"Beginnings" has made me realize that it is OK for me to dedicate my life to photographing new life, babies and pregnant women; really, that is what my work is all about. This is my passion. I think it takes a sense of maturity as a person and as an artist to grow to understand one's artistry. I have been so inspired all year. I learned it is OK to photograph newborns, to be in awe of the whole process of pregnancy. It is an incredible, momentous, and precious time.

Anne, the very first time I saw one of your photos, I was rooted to the spot in awe. I retain that awe, not only in the world your photographs illustrate but in your exquisite 'artist's eye' that captures it so perfectly. I can't write as well as you photograph but I hope you understand my meaning. Your art moves me. I am so very glad you overcame your doubts about doing this series. You seem like such a sweet, gentle, humble person and it really comes across in your work. Thank you. x

Great work.

The "old woman" photo scared me though, I must admit.

I loved it too. It's beauty is in the starkness of the contrast. The baby in her arms made the old woman look like a revered ancestral spirit passing on an ageless blessing to yet another generation and the old woman made the purity and fragility of the new life in her arms all the more profound. Just beautiful.

I love Anne Gedes. She is a remarkable artist with an impecable eye. My husband and I are expecting our first and just had our first ultra sound to determine how far long I am (10 weeks, due date is May 24th). I had not really thought about being pregnant until the moment that I met my baby face to face so to say. I saw the baby kick its leg and move its hands. I saw the heart beat even though I could not yet hear it. From that moment on I was absolutely amazed at the life unfolding inside my body and I fell in love with the baby I was seeing. That is what I love about Anne's work, she brings the simplicity of every beginning and shows it in such beautiful form.

Leave the nests in nature. The birds need them.

It's wrong when we scavenge and disturb nature for our "art."

Now I am a mother, I look at your work through different eyes and I see the incredible value and respect you have for your models and yor photos appear to truly be art,. How wonderful to see the beauty and preciousness of new life and mothers and children celebrated. I think fathers and children would look amazing as well.. I have so many gorgeous photos of ny husband and our daughter and the shared wonder they felt for each other in early days and how that bond has continued through her early years.

If I found "creepy" what the majority of people found beautiful, I think I would consult a therapist to find out what kind of filter I am seeing the world through. You'd be amazed at what you can find out about yourself and how many puzzle pieces could fall into place.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I don't care for Jackson Pollock.

I sort of agree with Possum. I like the straightforward photos, but the dressing up of the babies in costumes has always seemed kind of forced to me, like putting dresses on kittens- I think the ones of just the poppies are far more beautiful although certainly not as commercial.

They really are! However, that one with the older lady caught me a little off guard... I should probably blame watching too many scary movies!
