Dating Technology

Often times I catch myself wondering: What has this world come to? Can anyone think for themselves anymore? Is following trends, especially social media trends, the only way to be these days? Does anyone really know themselves anymore? I urge you to take a minute and think about that, to really let that thought sink in and ask yourselves just that.

From both a woman and a mans perspective, dating in this generation has become so difficult that, not even a Dating for Dummies book can dumb it down enough. In this day and age, the only marriage that lasts is a person with their cellphone -- unfortunately.

  • To the slow walkers with their faces buried in their phones -- I hope you walk straight into a pole on a crowded city street.
  • To those sitting at a local coffee shop for hours taking up all the seating focused on your Facebook newsfeed on your laptop or watching the newest vine video... for you I hope your coffee gets ice cold and you taste nothing but the bitterness of your double extra shot of espresso.
  • And for the perpetual texters that are out on a fancy date at the swankiest restaurant... well for you I hope there is hair in your food and your meat is extra bloody and rare.

What if your soul mate was sitting right there in front of you and you both failed to meet because you each were preoccupied with Facebook, Instagram or Pinterest? Which is more important? People have forgotten how to properly communicate, how to socialize and interact with each other without it being "awkward."

So you're out one night and you meet the potential love of your life, you exchange numbers and plan to go out again this week sometime. And like clockwork, the marathon texting at all hours of the day and night begin, great success! You're texting non-stop, speaking emoji to each other, and ranting to your girlfriends and your bros that you have great chemistry -- all fine and dandy -- up until you meet again in person and there is no convo to be had. Its as stale as your sesame semolina bread from your favorite Italian bakery -- from last Sunday. Ah-mazing! Great job!

Really -- let's be realistic for a hot minute here. You don't actually know someone by 3,578 text messages exchanged, or feel loved or love, by the multi-colored heart emojis and kissy faces. Limit your texting, which leads to paranoia if they haven't responded in, IDK -- five minutes even though they "read message." Pick up the phone and call, hear the other person, plan a date and go on the date -- and really get to know the other person. P.S. -- stalking their Facebook and Instagram does NOT make you a genius on really knowing the other person and how/who they are.

I'll save the Social Media Celebrities for another article. Until then, put your phones away and go out and truly socialize, dedicated true time to get to know your significant other or just spend quality time with your friends and loved ones. And for the love of God, limit your "selfiesaturdays," "selfiesundays," "OOTDselfie" and selfies period.

"We've got this gift of love, but love is like a precious plant. You can't just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or just think it's going to get on by itself. You've got to keep watering it. You've got to really look after it and nurture it." -- John Lennon
