Open Letter to Teachers on Teacher Appreciation Day

Posted: 05/08/2012 3:31 pm

Dear Teachers,

There is a Japanese proverb that says, "Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher." By the time your students graduate from high school, they will have spent about 10,000 hours at school being instructed by more than 30 teachers. That's why almost everyone has a story about a teacher who has touched his or her life.

Just like so many politicians, artists, astronauts, entrepreneurs and surgeons, I am who I am today partly because of a great teacher. After dropping out of school, I found my way back and landed in Herman Katz's English class. Mr. Katz believed in me even when I didn't believe in myself, and over 40 years later I sometimes still spot his kind smile and horn-rimmed glasses among the sea of faces at my speaking engagements.

Teachers devote their lives to giving our children the tools to succeed and inspire them to do it.

It is you who listen to our children, who challenge them, and who encourage them to stand up for their values. You will teach our future U.S. presidents the importance of the Constitution, show the next Carlos Santana how to strum a guitar, and demonstrate the Scientific Method to the bright young student who will cure cancer.

The simple truth is that, as a nation, we must invest in a strategy that places appropriate value on the contribution that you and your colleagues make to our collective future. Teacher attrition rates are far too high, and given that you are the builders of our future, losing even one good teacher is too many.

Working closely with the teachers at the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, I have seen firsthand the inspiring effects of teachers leading their schools in shaping innovative district initiatives. We must continue to expand career and leadership opportunities like these, opportunities that allow you to develop your practice, foster a school culture that encourages collaboration with your colleagues, and empower you with the autonomy to innovate and thrive.

Moreover, any efforts to brighten our nation's future must be built upon a deep appreciation for your incredibly important work. On this Teacher Appreciation Day, I'd like thank you for your countless hours, your sweat and tears, and your relentless commitment to our children. And I'd also like to thank you in advance for inspiring the next generation of amazing teachers.

Very truly yours,

Antonio R. Villaraigosa
Los Angeles Mayor

You'll forgive me if I judge your sincerity on your actions rather than your words.

Hey, Mayor -- kick all federal government money and programs out of your schools, *then*, remove any and all rules or even "hints" that teachers are to be part of the teacher's union.

Your schools will almost magically become better. Add a school board actually interested in teaching kids their basics, so they know them and can use them, and are *not* continuing to use YOUR schools as indoctrination centers (at worst) and expensive baby sitters (at best), and YOUR schools will be the envy of the entire U.S.

My son is an elected official so I know politicians have to say things they don't always mean in order to gain support. Still, it's a sad thing to see.

In a few years when LAUSD suffers from the most severe teacher shortage in history, I hope Villaraigosa will understand the part that he played in it. Then again, he likely won't care.

P.S. over the next five years, we are gonna break your union, reduce your pay, and give your retirement to a brokerage firm to play with... but, yeah, thanks for all the blood, sweat and tears....

Written by the man who has done more to hurt, discourage, and defame teachers than any before. I used to encourage my best students to become teachers. Now, the smartest students that I teach, look at what this man, and those who pull his strings are doing to our profession, and are smart enough to not become teachers without my having to discourage them from a career of being constantly undermined, only to receive a false message of thanks from a thankless man.

Nice, now steal their pensions, cut their pay, and break their unions.

There are those great teachers who are committed to teaching and educating students, and then there are those teachers who are committed to the system and keeping their job. UTLA is chock-full of the latter (or perhaps only the vocal minority). In what other critical industry would we tolerate the combination of easy tenure and low accountability? In what other critical industry would we tolerate decade after decade of an inferior product combined with zero substantive reform? Mr. Villaraigosa, if great teachers are as important as you say they are, lets start firing the bad ones and paying the good ones.

You know, you should probably withdraw the sentence thanking us for inspiring the next generation of amazing teachers, because right now I'd discourage every single student I have who is thinking of the profession from acutally pursuing it. In fact, I'm telling them to run far and run fast and use their talents elsewhere, where they may in fact be respected and paid a living wage.

It is definitely a wrong time to be a teacher as long as people like you, mayor, are in charge.

I agree with jp90, teachers do not make great salaries compared to the schooling and training they have to get, but yet are being blamed for bad kids who don't want to learn, politicians are using them as scapegoats for their poor policy decisions, and parents who want to blame them while overlooking the lack of help they give their own kids when it comes time for homework.
