Can You Spell Bush? B - U - S... |
WASHINGTON - The Bush administration has spent $6 billion on a reading program for children, but according to a study by the program's own champion, the U.S. Department of Education, "It didn't work good!"
The program, Reading First, was created as part of the 2001 No Child Left Behind law, which aims to get all children doing math and reading at their proper grade level. But a representative said, "in the eight years, sorry seven years...I mean, six years, it's been being teached, the results are pretty much zero better."
The study did find Reading First led to more time being spent by teachers on the various aspects of reading judged to be important by a federal reading panel such as advertisements, text messages, bumper stickers and rifle operating instructions.
Congress recently cut funding to the program--over Bush's objections--he was about get this certificate for level 2.
The study found the programs failure is most like due to conflicts of interest within the program. Bush was outraged at these suggestions: My Daddy are a good authorer!! He writes much good books that is many fun for me to read."
The Department of Education has decided to replace the program with a celebrity book series to encourage the children to read with their idols. The series' first book will be titled Miley Cyrus' Bedtime Tales: Stories for Under the Sheets.
