Bill Richardson Withdraws

Jane Condon | Bio

Governor Bill Richardson is withdrawing his nomination to be Commerce Secretary. The FBI is investigating his ties to a California company that did business with New Mexico and contributed to his campaign. The former Presidential candidate, Energy Secretary and U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. insists, "I have acted properly."

Several other candidates (some qualified, some not) quickly come to mind:

  1. ROLAND BURRIS. Although the former Attorney General of Illinois thinks he is filling Obama's Senate seat, he cannot do so without two signatures--one from the Illinois Governor (check) and one from the Illinois Secretary of State (which he will not be getting). Game over, Burris. Some lawyers make good businessmen. Maybe you would, too.
  2. BERNIE MADOFF. Everyone wants to know how Madoff did it. How did he send out years of confirm statements without anyone guessing that he was the king of a50 billion Ponzi scheme? Takes a crook to find a crook. If this doesn't work out, might I recommend him as head of the SEC? (Same qualifications apply.)
  3. CLINT EASTWOOD. If "Dirty Harry" shows up at your office, what are you gonna do? You are going to do whatever he wants,. If the four-time Oscar winner can run an agency half as well as he directs and acts (or half as well as he ran the city of Carmel, California), this could be one great performance for America.
  4. JOHN KING. I think the uptight, upright anchor of CNN News would be a great choice. First of all, he looks good. Second, he will make magic maps to explain business in America to the rest of us.
  5. RICHARD SIMMONS. Think about it. Richard Simmons wears a sparkly tank top no matter what the freezing temperature of any TV studio. That takes guts. His current campaign (he has a new DVD out) is "A smaller behind in 2009." He wants to put exercise (and recess) back in the schools. Maybe he could put exercise in the corporations and thereby improve the clarity of thinking of all management. At very least, the whole country loses a few pounds. It's a win, win.

Anybody have any other suggestions?
