Disney Channel to Air Slumdog Millionaire Sequel |
Disney Studios, fresh off the release of the new TV movie/song/video game/backpack Tween Mountain!, today announced they had begun production on a sequel to Golden Globe winning film Slumdog Millionaire.
Producer Robert Johnson said that a camera will roll on Slumdog Millionaire 2: Mo' Money, Mo' Problems! immediately or sooner. Johnson said he was a huge fan of the first Slumdog Millionaire, which he plans to see in the coming months.
"The first Slumdog Millionaire is what they call a beta blocker version in computerese. So it's got a gameshow and some kids and the poor and some Indian people. In making this sequel we have the advantage of all of the awards buzz and acclaim combined with the fact nobody has seen it." With a gleam in his eye and a playful wink, Johnson said, "And after this sequel, nobody is going to want to have seen it!"
In the sequel, Joe Jonas plays lead character Slane, a poor but talented but poor young singer and part time dancer. Slane has had he longest run ever on the syndicated version of Deal or No Deal, having opened over 450 cases in the course of several weeks without having made a single deal.
It's a battle of wits between Slane and 'Howie', the game show host character played in the film by Howie Mandel. Mandel, who went to the same high school as Geddy Lee, the bassist and lead singer from Canadian power trio Rush told 236.com reporter Lee Stranahan, "Seriously, I went to the same high school as Geddy Lee from the pioneering North-of-the-Border progressive metal band Rush. This is not a joke but an obscure fact."
Meanwhile, there's a song.
Trouble starts when Slane catches the eye of Minky, a beautiful but homeless Briefcase Girl played by the not quite yet ironically named Alyson Stoner. Then there's a flashback and then a song and then she gets nervous and runs off to be alone and there's a song and then she comes back and they lock eyes again but it's all too intense and there's a misunderstanding and then a song but they figure out they both overreacted and then there's a bit of dancing and then a big finale and they and kiss and a song and the end.
Producer Johnson, working closely with screenwriter Daniel Webster and choreographer Marcellus Wallace, says they have retained the original 'spicy India curry' flavor of the first Slumdog Millionaire by hiring the lady who portrays Kelly Kapur on The Office to play "somebody. We're figuring that out."
Disney is also said to be preparing a series version of Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler, set to star Mickey Rourke and his previously unknown daugher Mickee Rourke. Duo will portray a father and daughter living a normal life who secretly moonlight as a professional wrestling team. And are wizards. Who have an internet show. And sing. On a cruise ship. And then they learn a valuable lesson. About family.
