What is the sound of thousands of 15-year-old geeks rushing to enlist?

Last week the Navy tested a new electromagnetic energy gun, known as a railgun, meant to replace conventional weaponry on ships. The gun can fire a projectile more than 230 miles with a muzzle velocity seven times the speed of sound.

But the railgun is already a reality, sort of, for millions of nerds. Similar weapons have been featured in sci-fi shows like "Battlestar Galactica" and video games like the hugely popular "Halo" series.

So how close are the U.S. armed forces to completely becoming a video game? To find out, we compared the current state of the military with features from the intergalactic conflict storyline from "Halo."
