   Quick Quiz: John Hagee

With the media in a frenzy over Barack Obama's wayward pastor, Paul Slansky wonders if the reason they don't ask John McCain tough questions about his still unrenounced crackpot supporter is because they're afraid to make the candidate mad.

1) What has earned Pastor John Hagee the most criticism?
His belief that the Jews brought their persecution - including the Holocaust - upon themselves because of their "disobedience and rebellion."
His obesity.
His exorbitant financial compensation - over $1 million a year - from his "nonprofit" ministries.
2) Which of these was NOT a statement by Pastor John Hagee?
"I make too damn much money."
"Those who live by the Koran have a scriptural mandate to kill Christians and Jews."
Catholicism is "a Godless theology of hate" that "produced a harvest of hate."
3) What did Pastor John Hagee say was "the whole purpose" of the Harry Potter books?
"To entertain people of all ages with a brilliantly realized story about good and evil."
"To desensitize readers and introduce them to the occult."
"To make every kid who reads them want to go to Warthogs."
4) False or true? John McCain said that he is "very proud to have Pastor John Hagee's support," since Hagee "supports what I stand for and believe in."
False. He wouldn't have said such a thing because he would have known that the media would have picked him apart about it.
True. And were these ill-advised statements dissected for days on 24-hour news channels? Nope, not even for nanoseconds.
5) What was wrong with Pastor John Hagee's declaration that Hurricane Katrina was God's retribution for the proclivity of New Orleans gays to flaunt their sinful lifestyle?
The "homosexual parade" that he claimed was due to be held on the day Katrina struck was actually scheduled for the following week.
The French Quarter and the Marigny, the city's primary gay neighborhoods - and the very ones that a homo-hating God could be expected to destroy - were spared serious flooding or destruction.
Both of the above, plus the obvious truth that, if He made everything, didn't He make those gays, too? And so if He loathes them so much, shouldn't He really be punishing Himself? And besides, isn't a vengeful God who seeks to punish people for things they have no control over hardly worth worshiping at all?
