John McCain is getting the swiftboat treatment over a claim made by a Secretary of the Navy in the New York Times. According to former Navy Secretary John Lehman, McCain was offered admiral rank before retiring from the Navy, but turned it down to move into politics. Others claim he was never offered the rank. The only interpretation? Let's assume McCain stayed in that POW camp because he was too much of an America-hating coward to escape. Hey, it worked against John Kerry.
The GOP turned Kerry from a war hero into an enemy combatant in 2004. Now with this latest development, it's clear you should never admit to being a hero if you want to run for president. In politics, nobody likes a showboat.
