The Conventions

PUMAs, it's STFU time. TY

John McCain is trying to lure Hillary's pissed off supporters into his camp with some new ads playing on their feelings of disenfranchisement. One new ad features a former Clinton supporter who claims she's voting Republican for the first time, and telling like-minded Democrats, "it's okay" to vote McCain. Another ad claims Hillary should be on the ticket, but Obama refused because she was too mean to him.

It's time for Obama to hit back. If he's not going to do it, that's fine. We did it for him...

Our new Obama commercial is aimed at those same disgruntled, astoundingly misguided, yet much coveted Hillary supporters, after the jump:

Of course I could see it was a "joke," something the equivalent of farting and being pleased with yourself. I even agree with the underlying message of the video, if not at all with the way it was delivered.

But as I said, if we can use a photo of Barack Obama and his voice, "I'm Barack Obama and I approve this message," then that gives license to any swiftboater to do the same with any piece of trash they want to put out, and the average voter has no idea what is satire when it comes to a Big Lie. It was Goebbels who first came up with the PR truth that if you repeat a Big Lie often enough, people will believe it.

And if that Big Lie has Obama's photo and his words, "I'm Barack Obama and I approve this message" attached, how in the world can the average low-information voter know what is official or not, a lie or not, from the right wing or from Barack?

Exactly because so many past campaign ads have been deceiving as to who is behind them, the regulation was developed that all official campaign material from a candidate should have the words of the candidate that he or she approves the message.

For us to violate that regulation means anyone can do so, with what consequences?

The video is funny -- however, adding on the message suggesting that Barack Obama approved your ad goes way beyond jumping the shark -- it lands you in some potentially very hot and costly legal waters.

I hope the Obama campaign sues your ass for every cent you've got.

The message is great, but it really is a serious mistake to add in the "I approve this message" clip for two reasons: it may be legally problematic, and it enables others to lift it and pass it off as Obama product.

I was horrified to see that 23/6 added "I'm Barack Obama and I approve this message" to the end of the 23/6 video "STFU" directed at Hillary supporters.

The video itself was shallow and sexist and disrespectful of the intensity of the struggle for women's rights and the severe disillusionment of those who wanted a woman president so strongly.

But on first glance I loved it--I too want to say STFU to PUMA members who might very well be Republicans in disguise attempting to disrupt the campaign for Obama.

The pros and cons of the video itself notwithstanding--and I realize that anything goes on a political satire site--I want to protest the use of the official-appearing "I'm Barack Obama and I approve this message" and his photo to videos he obviously would never approve.

The right wing attack machine does not understand jokes, they'll use something like this against Obama citing the authenticity of the "I'm Barack Obama and I approve this message" tag as proof the video is authentic.

Susie OutOfIt in the heartland who gets this video sent viral by the rightwing won't look up 23/6 to see that it's satire, she will believe the official "I'm Barack Obama and I approve this mesage" and tell all her voting friends that the video is real, Obama really means it, look, he says so at the end, "I'm Barack Obama and I approve this message." And what's worse, he swore!

The concept of requiring the message on legitimate materials to distinguish them from non-official materials was developed specifically to make it clear which materials are authorized and which are not.

Just imagine what the right wing could put out with the photo of Barack and his words, "I'm Barack Obama and I approve this message." Joe and Joan Voter wouldn't have a clue it was a joke, or from Swiftboaters R US.

Please do not invalidate this one method we have of knowing what is authorized and what is not.

Thank you.

Very funny and very true. Try posting even the most even-handed questions to a PUMA website. If you're like me, you'll get barred. They don't care for dissension. Yet they complain about getting railroaded. Hmmmmmm.

I could not agree more.

Today is the day: The Clinton Convention Catharsis.

Have it. Love it. Revel in it. Then let it go.

Tomorrow is a new beginning, with Hillary assuming the role that is appropriate - the ex-candidate supporting the nominee. Really supporting, not halfheartedly. It's time to get on board or get out.

To have Obama endorse this message is deceiving and conniving. I don't like it.
