The latest rat to jump off the sinking USS GOP: Charles Fried. A former Solicitor General of the United States under Reagan, Fried is one of the leading conservative scholars. Fried is also a professor at Harvard Law School, or, as Sarah Palin would say, an anti-American terrorist who loves fancy books more than the country. The feeling is mutual: Palin is the reason Fried cited for his switch.

This rat jump went beyond an endorsement -- Fried's announcement was that, in fact, he's already voted for Obama. But first he had to send a letter to the McCain campaign asking them to take his name off of the several campaign committees on which we was serving as an adviser. Ouch. It's like a large dyslexic black man just carved a backwards B right into the cheek of the campaign.
