Issues Watch: The Levi-Bristol Marriage
In a continuing series, we take a look at the specific issues driving voters' decisions today.
While Prop 8 might only be on the ballot in California, Americans nationwide will be passing their own referendum on the institution of marriage today.
Will we force Levi and Bristol to go through with their wedding?
A vote for McCain-Palin means we want to force these two teenagers to play house for the next 4 to 8 years. While a vote for Barack Obama will be a vote to let Levi hop on the next merchant marine vessel out of Alaska. If the Palins don't make it to Washington, they don't need Levi to keep up appearances. It was clear by the way they were shuffling Bristol in and out of high schools pre-election that they were trying to keep these lovebirds apart, so they'd probably be happy to see him go. But if McCain-Palin takes it, Levi's locked in. The question is put to America: Do we support politically motivated shotgun weddings or don't we? Only time will tell.
On the same note, a McCain-Palin ticket would also force Florida Gov Charlie Crist to go through with his own (by most accounts) sham engagement. If he wants to work with a McCain administration, he's going to have to keep up the sort of appearances Washington demands of a guy like Crist. Considering that Crist extended early voting hours in his state, he might be thinking an Obama presidency would be happy to work with a "confirmed bachelor" just as he is.
