The verdict is already in -- not just that McCain lost, but why. To the hardcore rightwing, the reason will be that McCain didn't use Reverend Wright enough. To them, McCain lost because he wasn't angry and rightwing enough. Sure, that always work. Sort of like the lunatic ex-boyfriend who thinks, "if I just call her more often, later at night, and yell louder, she'll take me back."

Politico's Jonathan Martin has a good look at this "what if" and why this it probably wouldn't have worked. But it's not going to stop the dead-enders at The Corner and the Weekly Standard.

Rick Wilson, a GOP consultant who made a Wright ad for an outside group believes it would have made the difference. "The dog is barking," he said, "but the story is that it took an outside group to step up and smack Obama in his smug mouth."

Yeah, sure, more of that we'd be crowning our oldest president on Tuesday.

But why stop there? Of course America loves the GOP -- and except for all these "what ifs," they would have won easily. For instance, what if...

• Barack Obama had been named "Karl Che Angela Davis Jim Jones Hitler Obama?"

• The party McCain is member of hadn't ruined the world?

• Cindy had cured McCain's jones for half-wit former beauty queens?

• Levi didn't think condoms just "aren't his thing?"

• Americans hadn't been so strangely resistant to getting their economic policy from the guy fixing the slow tub drain?

• Simmering rage made a candidate more attractive to people?

• Cindy had given Sarah one of her Xanax before the Couric interview?

• Ashley had been smart enough to carve the "B" the right way?

• McCain's running mate had been willing to call Obama a terrorist?

• Obama was more in the Suge Knight side of the spectrum?

• McCain had been lucky enough to be born a poor black guy with a dictor's name for a middle name?

• Americans didn't hate America so much?
