Electoral college to decide presidency today
For those that want the endless 2008 election to continue, good news -- it is! Today is the day that Barack Obama gets officially elected president, as the electoral college meets all over the country. This also means it's the official day for editorials calling for the abolishment of the electoral college.
It's not a real college, of course, though some electors will have dreams of showing up unprepared and naked. As Jonathan Soros explains in the Wall Street Journal, the institution was established by the framers because they didn't trust the people and direct democracy to make the right decision. And in the framers' defense, we did elect George Bush twice.
The rally point of the reformists is something called National Popular Vote, which has the advantage of not requiring a constitutional amendment. For how it works, it's worth reading the Soros piece. It's extremely sensible, which is why it'll probably never happen.
So, barring that, what else should we replace it?...

I'm sorry but Bush won in 2000 by one vote courtesy of the SCOTUS in a 5-4 decision.
