If They IM'd: Barack Obama and Rick Warren

You hate gay people, and I desperately need to be liked! Everyone wins! Put 'er there!

Let the pandering begin! Barack Obama has selected evangelical Saddleback Church pastor Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at his inauguration. Warren, perhaps better known as the bestselling author of "The Purpose Driven Life," is an outspoken opponent of both gay marriage and abortion, and activists for both causes are outraged. Sure, Warren believes in progressive causes like confronting climate change, AIDS and poverty, but can Obama's strategy be anything more than a transparent sucking up to the conservative Christian right?

Has the selling out already begun? Or was Obama conflicted about the choice? We may never know, but we can certainly speculate what might have gone down had the two men chatted via IM.

I'm tired of the "religious righteous" who pick and choose the parts of the Bible that fit their particular bias. Evidently pastor Rick has chosen to ignore the part about it being a sin to be a glutinous fat-ass.

I find the choice offensive. This man is going to be noted in the history books. Barack is choosing someone who represents the spiritual voice of our country and this is the best he could do? I'm sorry but I find it pandering and thoughtless.

Ok. He's allowed a few gaffs here and there and thank goodness this is not a permanent appointee but I think it is a mistake and puts a pall on the occasion.

If Obama wants a Christian prayer, OK. But Rev Rick is a copulating Christian, aka f#ckin Jesus freak. There are conservative Christians who aren't homophobic, anti-abortion & reactionary Bible thumpers. Rev Rick could say thanks but no thanks to BHO. Some rabid fundies question Rev Rick's decision to do a prayer for Obama on 1/20/09. If Rev Rick said thanks but no thanks, he'd solve his problems with fundies & Obama's problems with radical progressives.
