"Team of Rivals" or "Team of A-holes?"
How much anti-gay crap can Obama get away with before he's officially just "anti-gay?"
His decision to have Prop 8 proponent Rick Warren lead the prayer at his inauguration (why does an inauguration need a prayer?) has pissed off gay leaders, who were already kind of pissed off at Captain Change. His campaign has not been very friendly to their cause.
Gays were pretty much the group who got shafted the most by the Obama campaign. Remember that scuffle over those Muslim women who were shoved out of the frame of an Obama photo op that time? The gays never even got close enough to get shoved. Though Obama and Biden were against Prop 8 or any other constitutional amendments to ban gay marriage, they still came right out and made it perfectly clear that they are against gay marriage being legal. At his debate, Biden said it so matter-factly we had to double-check that we understood the definition of "gay marriage."
Then there was the time Obama had an "ex-gay" singer lead his rallies in South Carolina over the summer (man, groupies for "ex-gay" singers must be a really weird crowd). And though it might not have been his fault directly, the fact that his huge black turnout in California also amounted to a huge anti-gay turnout for Prop 8 did not lead to many gays dancing in the streets on election night.
Now he's got Rick Warren leading his inauguration prayer? This guy likes to compare gay marriage to incest. This isn't a "Team of Rivals" situation. There's a point where your team stops being rivals and starts being nothing more than a bunch of a-holes.
It feels like we're all just operating on faith that our beautiful beacon of hope and change couldn't possibly suck that bad. But has Obama done anything that might be appealing to the gay community yet, besides releasing those "running in a bathing suit" pics? Again, we're sure Obama doesn't hate gays, but maybe someone should remind him of that.
