A Return to Hats (PHOTOS)

Posted: 03/02/2011 7:38 am

Hats are one of the great style secrets of New York's senior set. In my grandmother's day, men and woman wouldn't have left the house without a stylish head covering. To this day the image of a woman in an elegant hat conjures the grace and glamor of times gone by. Not only are they a great accessory, but they come in all sizes, and are helpful in protecting your skin from the sun.
A few years back, 90-year-old model and actress Mimi Weddel pronounced, "The only romantic thing left in life is a hat," in the documentary on her life, "Hats Off." Let's take a cue from Mimi and bring back some vintage charm. Put on a hat before leaving the house, you will be ever the more stylish for it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this piece!!

FYI as a Fashion Accessory professional I can tell you that Hats are on the major uptrend. Every Specialty Store despite the demographic they cater to will expand their hat assortment for the coming Spring/Summer and thru Fall/Winter 2011. Even the store that has a Kardashian as a “designer” will exponentially increase their qty though this year. Anthroplogie always has an amazing selection of hats… but their customer always dresses to stand apart from the crowd.

Also, hats are a major staple throughout the country. Most of us overlook them!! There are the ladies who wear them to Church. Let’s not forget the Kentucky Derby, Steeplechase and all the Horse Event… not to mention the Polo Matches.

The ladies who lunch all have Hat luncheons. Here in NYC there is the NY Conservancy Luncheon… to which all ladies MUST wear fabulous hats. The same is true for luncheons from Vizcaya in Miami to Pittsburgh to San Francisco.

Kate Middleton is always photographed wearing a hat… and this adds to the current romance about hats.

I have been in this Industry for almost 15 years. Never quite understood the allure or the volume of business (and I’m not talking about Cold Weather) until I was put in charge of a Designer’s collaborative effort.

Although the hats look FABULOUS on the gracious ladies shown in your slideshow… they are not just for the elderly.

Thanks!!! BTW... Love the Quote!!

Loved the hats in the HuffPo piece, "Lots of Red Lipstick On The Streets Of New York," (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/melissa-fedor-abby-wallach/red-lip-alert_b_830734.html#s248020&title=Classic_in_Clarins) So many of them younger than the gorgeous ladies in this piece -- further proof that hats work for so many different women.

Sigh....I LOVE seeing all these beautiful women with their elegant hats.

ARIANNA, PLEASE CREATE A "MATURE STYLE SECTION" FOR US

Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a style section for the 50+ crowd so we Baby Boomers could enjoy larger daily doses of this kind of beauty? Did anyone else notice while flipping through all the Oscar photos of the young glams that there were only several (4?) "mature" women? And of that small handful, only Annette Benning looked "real". Why can't we have our own MATURE STYLE section so that we can celebrate our aging selves every day? Why do we have to see young, perfect faces everywhere we look? There has to be more for us than AARP, for goodness sake. I'll bet we'd get a readership as big the DIVORCE page does (especially if it included mature tastes in interior design too)!

Do you agree????

Beg pardon, but millions of Americans are UNEMPLOYED. Not a good time to make expensive hats the fashion, unless you are completely removed from reality of working and NONWORKING Americans.

Hats don't have to be expensive. Many of these are vintage and I know a lot of ladies who get them at thrift stores for a few dollars each.

Aaah. Nothing like a bit of style on a woman's (or man's) head. Makes a very nice change from the pedestrian baseball cap.

Love, love, love these photos! But then, I love hats - created my company, Madcapz, because I love caps! If you want to see some fun women's caps check out http://www.madcapz.net. And they are made here in the USA - unusual, but true!

I'm a woman in my 30s living in New York. I wear a hat most days, great hats from designers like Barbara Feinman. I see many, many other women my age wearing hats. I am not unique. It's necessary in the cold and great in the summer sun. When I saw this article I immediately noticed that my age group was not represented here, but I assure on the streets of New York, you will find many younger women wearing awesome, gorgeous hats. I wish this piece had covered a larger range of demographics.

I should go to New York more often. I love hats! When I was younger, there used to be a department store in my town that had one sales lady in the hat department that was the real deal. You could try on a hat, and it would look okay, then she would come over and adjust it by a milimeter and it would look amazing! I don't know how she did it! I used to collect vintage hats, and still have quite a few of them. I'm just not quite bold enough to wear them in DC, where fashions tend to conservative (women under 50 wear Ann Taylor, over 50 wear Talbots or Brooks Brothers).

I don't think everyone knows how to wear a hat. One important thing to remember is the material of the hat and the weather. Felt hats should never be worn in warm/summer weather.

I love hats and I've been called "the Imelda Marcos" of hats. I wear them all the time and always receive favorable, unsolicited comments. I "rock" the hats and I think everyone should wear them.

Let's bring back mens hats (Fedoras, Derbys. Pork Pies - ever sailor hats) and instill corporal punishment for everyone that wears a ballcap when not on a baseball or softball field.

And if you wear a ballcap in public with a sticker or a tag on it and you're not the reincarnation of Minnie Pearl, you get house arrest.

Guys look great in hats! Don't forget the Panama! Men, WEAR HATS!

Men still occasionally wear hats down south, especially if they're thinning on top.
