Sean Hannity lost control of himself and his show on Tuesday night, after co-host Alan Colmes compared John Edwards' infidelity to John McCain's affair.
Usually, the two hosts of "Hannity & Colmes" take turns questioning guests and carefully avoid debating each other, but Hannity made a rare departure to repeatedly yell that McCain's affair was somehow acceptable because it occurred after he was tortured for five and a half years in Vietnam. This clip does not take off until about 2:55, but then it gets feisty and weird in a hurry:

There is something important that needs to be taken into consideration here, and that is forgiveness and healing. I do not believe we should say John Edwards' career is over, because many people have fallen, but it matters how they respond. What McCain did when he came back from Vietnam was without excuse, but that was then. He has been married to his second wife for twenty-eight years now, and he has accepted the blame for his failed first marriage. He even cited this as the greatest moral failure of his life.
We all need to be consistent with the standards to which we hold our politicians. Again, Edwards' political career should not be seen as finished, because it depends upon how he deals with his failure. If he accepts responsibility, seeks forgiveness, humbles his heart, and desires to start over again, I believe he could once again be elligible for the presidency.
Let me close by saying that I am not an Edwards supporter and never would be, but there is nothing different about what he did and what McCain did. We must not excuse infidelity within marriage, but at the same time, we should allow for people to prove they have changed. I believe that McCain has grown considerably since his failures, which is proven by his current marriage, and that those former failures should not be a factor in his quest for the White House.
I was just debating about this with my husband who watches Fox every night... I was just happy to finally see this come out... WOW! They must have heard my praying.
Good job Alan!

As Colmes said repeatedly, Edwards is currently a private citizen and McCain is the presumptive Republican nominee.
Just to provide some detail, the brief version is this: His first wife, Carol, waited for him while he was in Vietnam. During that time, she was in a terrible car accident. She was operated on a dozen times, and in the treatment she lost about 5 inches in height. Did John McCain stand by his woman? No. When he met his current wife, Cindy, he started an affair with her while he still was married to Carol. McCain blindsided Carol with the break-up, and he and Cindy even got their marriage license before the divorce from Carol was final.

And yet, he was being give a prime time speaking spot at the Dem convention...
Why is that???
The old "yea, but...." defense is lame and inherently self defeating.
Regardless of all that, did McCain embezzle campaign funds to keep his mistress and pay off co-conspirators???
No???
Then you have no comparison whatsoever...
Michale....
"Regardless of all that, did McCain embezzle campaign funds to keep his mistress and pay off co-conspirators??? "
Do you have proof that it was embezzled campaign funds that were used or is it purely speculation at this time?
Keating 5.
I never watch HANNITY and Colmes because it's usually just HANNITY. Finally, it turned into Hannity and COLMES. Hooray!
Of course, there's hypocrisy on the part of the right regarding the Edwards affair v. McCain cheating on his first wife. Never mind the rumors about a possible Iseman affair in recent years.
What I can't get over is Hannity's carrying on about Edwards' 28,000 square foot house and his hair. What about McCain's EIGHT houses and his $520 shoes??? Talk about conspicuous consumtion! C'mon everyone. Can't anyone conceive that someone (Edwards) can have a lot of money and still care about poor people or that someone (McCain) can have tons of money and not give a rat's ass about poor people?
Speaking to the larger hypocrisy here..
Back when the Foley scandal broke, many on the Right compared the scandal to the Studd's affair that happened 10-12 years previously. The Left pooh-poohed that, saying that something that happened over 10 years ago is not relevant today...
Flash forward to today..
The Democrats Golden Boy is caught in a messy scandal involving children and illegal activities...
NOW the Left wants to reach back THIRTY YEARS to pin something on McCain in a vain attempt to fade the heat...
How is this not hypocrisy???
Michale.....

That came out wrong.. Strike that to read
The Democrats Golden Boy is caught in a messy scandal involving an out of wedlock child and illegal activities...
My bust...
Michale.....
i think since February Obama is the Golden boy.
Exactly, how is it not hypocrisy from the Republican morality police when Hannity makes the following statement "If you can’t keep a promise to your family, can’t keep a promise to your wife, you’re having an affair, you’re lying about the affair repeatedly. Why should the American people trust you when you say you’re not gonna lie to them? Why should we trust you?”. Why is it that McCain is exempt from these standards? Are you saying that there is there's a statute of limitations that has run out on McCain's infidelity? If people like Hannity want to make an issue out of Edward's affair and make comments like the one above then McCain needs to be held to the same standards no matter how much time has passed. I personally find both men's behavior to be reprehensible with regards to their treatment of their sick/injured wives.
Allan, I used to watch your show for your perspective, but I had to quit when Hannity started every night bashing Obama and Rev Wright. Maybe I will give you some play, you certainly redeemed yourself tonight. Keep up the good work. I always thought you were a lot smarter than Hannity.
Wow – That was great. It was like Aikido, Colmes took Hannity’s argument and used it against him and then the idiot tried to justify it. They told them to drop the Edwards affair thing but they had to push it. ;-)
I actually saw this the other night. I was watching Hannity & Colmes because I like to laugh at Sean Hannity's daily talking points of Obama's associations with "radicals" Bill Ayers, Rev. Wright, Tony Rezko and now he has added Ludacris to the mix.
I gotta give Colmes some credit, he finally stood up. I was sitting on my couch claping when he compared the John Edwards infidelity to McCain's. Sean Hannity knows Colmes was right that's why he got so angry and kept trying to tallk over Colmes.
Email Alan Colmes and thank him for standing up to Hannity. Ask him to continue to stand up for what is right and true. McCain and his surrogates can't keep getting away with their lies. Someone needs to stop this idiocy!
Wow! Colmes officially has his blls back.
I guess my favorite part was Hammity talking about Edwards's "28,000 sq ft mansion." How many square feet, I wonder, do John McCain's eight houses cover?
Just like a Republican--hard line all the way until it's one of your own, then the justifications and excuses never stop.
doesn't McCain own about 8 homes?
Do you have any evidence those homes were acquired by embezzling campaign funds??
No??
Then I fail to see the relevance...
Michale.....
Talk about your (Unfair and Unbalanced) double standard! Everyone should watch this decide whether John McCain is getting a free ride from the major media.
If Hannity's position is that McCain's service, imprisonment, and torture in Vietnam - something we all owe him our deepest respect and gratitude for - left him incapable of making honest, moral decisions, he should have the some doubts about McCain's ability to be competent as the most powerful leader in the free world.
I was a strong supporter of John McCain before he allowed himself to be compromised by appearing with and accepting the support of John Hagee, who's racist views are nothing new. This Fox News episode simply shines a light on a candidacy with a very dark side.
"If Hannity's position is that McCain's service imprisonment and torture in Vietnam . . . left him incapapble of making honest moral decisions, he should have the some [I'm assuming same] doubts about McCain's ability to be competent as the most powerful leader in the free world."
Well said. Besides, John Edwards lost a teenage son in a freak accident. Does that horrible personal tragedy mitigate what Edwards did, then? I guess if Sean is so concerned about fairness and consistency, he should give Edwards the same pass as he obviously gives McCain.
Hannity through family values under the bus.
threw
Hannity threw family values under the bus.
Colmes nailed Hannity's ass to the floor on this one. Too freaking hilarious.
it's about time Alan stood up to him!!!!!!!! Sean always gets the last word and mocks Alan for being a liberal..Kudos to Alan Colmes, he finally got some balls.
