The Obama campaign just rolled out a new YouTube video with Natalie Portman rallying young Americans. But she's not asking them to vote for Obama.
Instead, the campaign tapped Portman to push young people who already support Obama to press their parents to do the same. It's part of a larger effort by the Obama campaign, "The Talk," that aims to turn its sizable edge among young voters into a persuasion machine.
"Are you sure if your parents are voting for Obama?," asks the campaign pitch. "If not, you may be the only person who can convince them." There's a website with videos, policy information and tips especially for parental outreach:
- Think about their perspective. If they are Republican, or are concerned about Barack's policies, think about where they are coming from and what makes them think the way that they do.
- Don't wait until the last minute -- it might take a few conversations for you to convince them, so start as early as possible.
Portman recorded her video in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she stumped for Obama and had "the talk" with her grandmother.

I love Natalie Portman!!! And it's heartwarming to know that she's as authentic in real life as she appears on screen. Keep up the good fight, girl.
Love Her!
I'm glad to see her stumping for 0bama. I know she was a big Hillary supporter!
This young lady is a great role model for American girls to look up to!!!!!
Natalie is Harvard graduate, and is also beautiful and talented. And she has a good heart. So glad to see her involved in this campaign.
I agree that Ms. Portman is a very intelligent and attractive woman. However, the idea that people's parents are going to be persuaded by their college age (or younger) students to vote for Obama is ludicrous. Who knows better what's best for the country; parents of children?
Well they could start off by saying, "You know grandma and Grandpa, Obama is not really Muslim".
Fortunately, not all parents are black and white, literally. Some take their children, and their college degrees, quite seriously. By your logic, 1099, would you not give an ear to your daughter who's a political science major, or son the economist, then?
.it takes their children informing them on issues to become more involved.
Besides, not all parents are well-informed on issues, or might have residual prejudiced thinking about blacks, Muslims, etc. Some parents don't even follow politics..
Anytime there is an open, active discussion on politics between parents and children is a good idea and should be encouraged, at least to me. Stereotyping the youth is part of the reason John McCain finds himself in his current situation.
I am lucky my elderly parents are firm Obama supporters. I just have to help them with a few facts as they are actively campaigning for Obama with people they meet.
Now my younger brother, there's a problem. His church has taken over his brain. And how do you compete with some supernatural power speaking to someone.
Can't win them all. But we sure do have enough to win.
Landslide Obama !
I have the same problem with my younger brother. Well, sort of! In his case, I think he fried his own brain with drugs and alcohol.
Alcohol with the Repub kool-aid as a mixer!
I've always like Natalie and would like to say she is amazing. So talented and beautiful.
Love her! My boyfriend always calls her my girl crush.
She's gorgeous and an Obama backer... I'll be back in a few minutes. LOL
