Announcing HuffPost Green: Our New Eco-News and Opinion Section

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

When we picked June 4th as the launch day for HuffPost's new Green section, little did we know the Democratic nomination would be decided just the night before.

So today, as well as celebrating the culmination of a historic primary race, we here at HuffPost are also celebrating the kick-off of HuffPost Green.

Ever since we launched HuffPost, environmental issues have been a significant part of our focus -- indeed, part of our DNA. In fact, long before HuffPost was even a twinkle in our eye, I was championing, via the Detroit Project, the need to push the nation's energy policy in a more sustainable direction -- better both for our environment and our national security.

And our HuffPost community has made it clear that you are interested in learning about -- and talking about -- living in a more environmentally-friendly way.

So as we continue the Huffington Post's expansion, creating a go-to destination for the latest and most useful Green content was a logical next step.

HuffPost Green features up-to-the-minute news stories, blog posts, video, and community forums. The focus is on eco news and trends -- from the latest scientific findings and environmental legislation to the latest green lifestyle tips. The section will also feature advice on sustainable investing and highlight eco-friendly businesses such as renewable energy, green building, recycling and organics.

While bringing about real change is critically important -- we don't think going green has to be like taking your medicine. So don't expect any finger-wagging (well, not too much anyway). We're not interested in being greener-than-thou -- just greener today than yesterday. Our philosophy is pretty simple: it's not about some people doing everything, but everyone doing something to make the world a more sustainable and better place to live.

And to ensure that we are bringing you the smartest, freshest, and most useful green content, we have partnered with two of the world's premiere green media brands -- Discovery's popular sustainable-living website, TreeHugger.com, and Planet Green, Discovery's 24-hour eco-lifestyle television network.

TreeHugger will provide its blend of timely blog postings, video features, news items, and forums where users can interact. Planet Green will contribute highlights of its original green lifestyle programming -- content for people of all ages and backgrounds. And our editors will infuse this green mix with the usual HuffPost style and attitude.

So please click here to check it out. And, most importantly, send us any ideas you have for HuffPost Green, including any green news items you think our readers would like to see.

How about setting the page backgrounds to black (in the green section) in order to conserve energy for people still using old CRTs?

Good timing for the launch of Huff Post Green, but the outcome of the 2008 Presidential race may not translate into the Climate Act of 2009. Don't expect 2009 to be the year of federal climate legislation, 2010's more likely. By then it should be clear to all that the good old days of cheap fossil energy are gone for with the wind and that a sustainable foreign policy and domestic security and growth are wrapped around each other. Smart solutions to climate and energy needs are emerging now at the city and state level, and soon they'll be there for the asking.

But clear is not the same thing as easy. The fight over putting teeth, muscle and money into federal climate legislation won't be for the faint-hearted. Stay tuned.

This Global warming thing is the biggest joke & the best technique to rip off the American people and the world in fact!
31,000 scientists have determined and sworn that this a fallacy.
Here's an example: Al Gore after his demise from running for the presidency and lost. Has become so wealthy off this bunk of global warming (even won a Pulitzer prize) over this lie he proclaims????
The man made 1.2 Million as Vice president and now is worth over a $100 Million due to this prophecy of this Global warming????

Come on People of America don't buy into this. Every city, county, and state will milk you for millions of your hard earned dollars.

Seattle mayor Greg Nichols first wanted to charge twenty cents to every customer that used a plastic or Paper sacks for purchases. Would like us to utilize cloth one's (organic of course)! I see a $ entering the picture here!
I ask you---do you have time to lug cloth bags all around everywhere you shop?
The final nail in the equation is there's not many extra dollars floating around these days due to those whom have already hit our finances speaking of the oil companies with these outragious gas prices Which in turn trickles down to raise everything? They (all business’s) have the license to steal now, and use the excuse of the rising fuel cost!
You can determine this by educating yourselfs to the truth or falses of these injustices.........

Do you have a problem with less pollution?

illogical: Global warming critic = polluting capitalist? Get real.

I don't need a trumped up "crisis" to do right by the World, and I'm pretty certain neither does CliffC.

I'd rather have an honest, scientifically based discussion about climate change and the environment, frankly. Do you have a problem with science?

CliffC: Re: your rant about Al Gore. I tink you have completely missed the point of what is happening in the world today.
GLOBAL WARMING, as I understand it, is just another name for a terrible problem. THE REAL PROBLEM is OVER POPULATION, but the religious freaks wont buy that. Hence the use of the term Global Warming.

Cliff, try to imagine a world with 9 BILLION people. Our once productive planet will be unable to sustain us. You may dismiss this problem as GW. I call it interference by the Catholic, Muslim, and any R/wing religious fundamentalist religion, whose sole creed is to continue to recreate, more of our own kind.

Here, in Australia, the Catholics formed such an unholy alliance with our previous government they are able to deny aid to impoverished countries if the aid includes advice about family planning. The present government is no better. Please Cliff, know what the real problem is.

Awesome! Wonderful Idea! You rock my world Arianna!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:01 PM on 06/04/2008

Yes, Arianna, but when are you going to create a Book section here?
We need less boring critics and lazy journalists like in the New York Times, we need to debate more about ideas, about books. One of the worst books I read this year was "Then We Came to the End". I never read more BORING book in my life and this book was one of 10 "best" book, according to NYT. What a misery!!! People that buy this book has no literary taste and a very bad judgment. We need someone like Mishiko Kakutani to challenge all the these bad books.

I am so grateful to the Huffington Post good works in raising awareness on the environment-often pointing to the sound science that reports on risk to both the environment and human health.

While “green” for many translates exclusively to the environment “green” actually translates too much more in the work to raise the bar on human health. Especially in the work to prevent those suspected and known cancer causing environmental exposures that are both unnecessary and preventable.

What we do in our lives is what counts. Scientist tell us that 70-80% of all cancer comes from outside of our bodies-to include behaviors like smoking.

Cancer is manufactured - it is not an unlucky role of the dice.

Every school day in this country we have 46 children and or two classrooms of children diagnosed with cancer. Never before have the incidences of cancer been so high for children.

We have created a world of great conveniences-with little thought for the unintended consequences for our environment and human health.

Homes in America are filled with products most of us have little understanding. Made of a whole host of chemicals that many of us cannot pronounce much less know what negative outcomes or the role they may have on the environment and or human health.

I congratulate the Huffington Post for providing a storefront that can help all of us help ourselves for raising the bar on the environment and human health. Thankyou.

Please provide some proof on that. If you do then you have found the cure for cancer. You would be more beloved than Mother Teresa.

Everyone will die from some cause. Cancer death rates were so much lower prior to industrialization for two primary reasons.

1) There were few hazardous chemicals to affect the human body. Today, millions of new chemicals are being introduced into the environment every year, and many of them are potent carcinogens. Look at the soaring cancer death rates in China.

2) Modern medicine is reducing the death rate from many diseases unrelated to cancer, which increases the chances of dying from cancer.

Mike 53-

Its important to only be guided by the sound science on this issue-while I am not a scientist you will be able to find countless helpful resources online relative to your concerns.
Let me suggest you start with any of the federal agencies and or cancer centers.
To be very clear -I am talking about environmental exposures that are suspected and or known to be linked to cancer. No one is claiming the cure for cancer. And while the cure is not to be underestimated-we must expand our view towards prevention.

Good luck in journey for answers.

Good idea Arianna,

It is important to separate the truly green from green marketing, ("greenwash"). Since green has become so fashionable ("Green is the new black) it's important that we look behind the fluff.

Add that to your mission and I'll be fully on board.

Good luck on the new venture

Thanx Arianna for all you do to get the word out to us all.

We need to focus on green transportation, too. I've been digging around, and there appear to be few Electrics ( cars ) available to the GP, except at extremely exorbitant prices. The technology is in place... Just look at the Tesla ! ( Then look at the price !! )

As a nation, we need to concentrate on getting off fossil fuels ASAP, and charging our Electrics via wind, solar, and hydroelectric.

Thanx again for all you do, Arianna.

More to follow. -ralph

Most important issue on the planet--literally. Thanks. I love Obama, but this site was becoming very lopsided on the news. I started going to MSN for unbiased coverage and world news. Now will you please drop "Living", aka "What's new in childrens' hairstyles and yoga positions"?

I would like to hear from someone who knows about diesel conversions to run on waste vegetable oil. IMO, this is the best alternative fuel answer, becuase it converts a toxic waste product the is produced in abundance in all restaurants, only to be dumped in a toxic landfill when it could be simply converted to run in diesel engines and bypassing the need for fossil fuels entirely. Just about everyone drives diesel cars in Europe. Dr. Diesel invented the engine in 1900 to run on peanut oil. It was after his death that it was converted to petroleum. It seems like a "no brainer". I would really appreciate feedback by some interested idividuals who was like to start a movement to diesel and waste vegetable oil. Thanks

For more information about converting your diesel car, truck or bus to run on used vegetable oil, check out this segment:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QkbOtvBuHI

It fully explains the process for both installing systems and also how to filter the used veggie oil (fuel)

yesterday while at a midwest shopping center, in the midst of a rainstorm, the sprinklers were on, watering the plants contained with the different segments. the sprinkling system wasnt even efficient; a lot of the water was running off into the pavement, a clear, evident squandering of water.

Not trying to be the PETA of the water conservation group, it certainly seemed that sprinkling systems should be manually controlled, abandoned.......you name it; actually saw sprinkling systems on at a hospital right after it had torrentially rained......

this could be a real savings if someone would give a heads up to local committees, shopping center management, whatever.......

any suggestions on how to go about this? seems to me its big enough to do something about all the waste and runoff

Good point. Water conservation and watershed protection is THE most important issue for a large portion of the country. I see very little about this issue on this blog.

Irrigation systems can be equipped with rain sensors. There is no need for such waste.

The water system staff in my town go around and check to make sure people aren't egregiously and habitually violating the local irrigation laws.

Hi AH - I saw the new tab over the weekend and I wondered - how long has that been there? Thanks for clearing that up. And it is wonderful to see - the only way we will save our planet is if this topic becomes more mainstream - and you are helping to accomplish this by adding it to your site in such a prominent way. Very nice.
