DNC Diary: Michelle, Michelle, Michelle

Michelle's speech was a home run. Emotional, heartfelt, and very authentic. On a night where Ted Kennedy passed the Democratic Party's moral baton, Michelle picked it up and ran with it -- evoking RFK's famous evocation of George Bernard Shaw ("Some men see things as they are...") by talking about the world as it is vs the world as it should be. The cutest, laden with meta-meaning line of the night, however, came from Michelle's brother who revealed that even though, as children, they were only allowed to watch one hour of television a night Michelle had still managed to memorize every episode of that iconic rendering of American family life, The Brady Bunch. Lucky for Team Obama that the show she memorized wasn't Gilligan's Island or Green Acres. Michelle, Michelle, Michelle...

BUMPER STICKER IDEA

OBAMA-BIDEN
ONE HOUSE EACH, NO EX-WIVES

As always, we will get the President and First Lady we deserve. If we are fortunate enough to have Michelle, she will make all of us proud. While Hillary was just as accomplished as Michelle, she was also a politician first and always. Maybe Michelle is too, but I doubt it, and judging from the tears I saw last night, among middle-aged white female delegates, they believe her sincerity. I can't wait to see her on the world stage.

Another great article Arianna, and Michelle Obama was great last night. Very moving speech something we all have needed for a very very very long time. Great speech Michelle.

I'm just thrilled I wasn't the only one with tears rolling down my face. I wasn't sad or fearful...I was moved. I've need that cry ever since November 2004.

AMEN!
She is refreshingly forthright, articulate and warm
Many many women identify with her as a real mother and that is gold

My Republican friend who has been so critical of the Obama's could find no fault...not even her outfit was objectionable.
I believe Michele Robinson Obama took the wind out of many a sail last night!

Oh, please. The content was great, but her delivery was over-the-top ridiculous. Her acting and emoting put a huge barrier between herself and her audience. Nothing genuine about her delivery, which is a real shame, because she has such a great story. Michelle, your story speaks for itself: drop the crappy high school acting bit.

Some people seem to be able to find something negative in everything. I thought it was a great speech with great delivery. Tell us about why you named yourself Call Me Nag!! Must be some good reason.

it's not hard... there are negatives about everything. it doesn't say much about the thing being critiqued, it simply says a lot about the person doing the critiquing.

look for negative and you will find it.

Wow, Ms Nag - did you watch the speech or were you still to busy crying about the primary. Ms. Obama was fantastic and there was not a dry eye in the house. Hmm - maybe you are worried she could be the first woman president. Yeah!!!!!

Are you kidding? Were you watching the same speech? I thought she was flawless, authentic, and incredibly inspiring.

Amazing speech! But it was more like a portion of a heartfelt conversation and a speech - which is why Michelle truly connected to the masses. She connected on many different levels in an approachable and compassionate way. Probably the best convention 'speech' I've heard in my lifetime. Not only was it so authentic and reaching that it moved the convention floor to tears, but her words moved everyone in my living room to tears as well.

I am amazed by Michelle Obama. People are constantly talking about Barack's oratory skills, but I'd have to say that he has some competition. Michelle showed her passion and intelligence. But most of all, she was genuine. This was by far the most genuine political speech I've ever heard. And what I love most is that she was able to show her strength as a woman without hitting us over the head with it, unlike Hillary Clinton. This was not the focus of her speech, but merely grounds to say everything else she had to say with conviction. When Barack makes it to the White House, democrats can be proud not only of our President, but also our First Lady.

That wasn't a political speech at all or were you not listenting? It was delivered at a political event was the speech had nothing to do with politics.

I always knew Michelle was a caring very smart lady.

Last night brought tears to my eyes she was wonderful and Obama's little girls were adorable. It will be nice to have small children in the White House.

Such a shame how some cable shows are spinning her speech - for instance Joe of "Morning Joe" has made several very odd remarks and during the convention he said the Democrats needed a shovel to digg themselves out and Chris Matthews & Olderman kind of cut him off Good for them!

Time to make some changes on MSNBC with Joe!

I have always supported Obama and so has my 21 year old who never cared about politics but when Obama was in New Orleans and was walking around the French Quarter, Obama walked up to my son and shook his hand and asked How was his life doing and they talked for a few minutes and my son was hooked on the Obama Spirit!!!!!

Morning Joe makes nothing BUT odd remarks. Every other sentence is about "when I was running for Office". If he was so damn good, why isn't he still there? Oops, I forgot? LOL By the David Shuster blew him out of the water this a.m. Go David!!!!!

I thought Michelle was great. Sometimes I look at how poised and hard working are these candidates and their partners. How they get up every day and do what they have to do - is a marvel to me. Michelle and Barack are a wonderful example to all Americans of all that's right in America. I can only pray that the fears and divisions which might hold America back from its destiny will be sent packing down the river in the tears of yesterday.

Home run was definitely the phrase for Michelle's speech. She had me mesmerized, and for the first time in years I felt proud to be an American.

Now I'm going to have to vote for O, even though he's not as liberal as I want him to be!

It was a great speech, expertly delivered. What a testament to Sen.Obama's judgement that he chose this extraordinary woman. And that she chose him. And that they found each other. Positively heartwarming. If that doesn't convince America that the Obamas should be the next occupants of the White House, I don't know what will. You want traditional family values? Look no further. Unlike John Edwards and Bill Clinton, there is no hint, no whiff of any marital infidelity here! I do have concerns about the response of the Obama campaign in general to the Republican attack machine. Right now, it come across, frankly, as somewhat tepid. Maybe its just how the Obama campaign's response is filtered through the mainstream media. On one level, it's all about controlling perceptions. Striking a balance between responding in kind without stooping to their level is what is needed. I trust the Obama campaign will effectively respond to this challenge.

I agree. If you haven't seen it yet, watch "American Centurion." Great video, I would love if they played it the convention (though that's probably asking too much...).

Watching Michelle made me proud.. proud of myself... proud of our citizens...proud of what this great country has finally become.... because as I watch Michelle, this middle-aged white woman does not see a black woman - when I watch Barack, this middle-aged white woman doesn't see a black man.... I see Americans -smart, gifted, accomplished, and dedicated to making America better for all of us.....

Was she gracious - of course.. was she intelligent - of course... was she inspiring - of course... was she uplifting - of course..... will she be a wonderful First Lady - of course.... and is the pigment of her skin a little darker than mine - SO WHAT - finally, SO WHAT!

On Thursday night, in a city surrounded by mountains - we will all get to see over the top!

Well said. I found myself tearing up when she talked about bringing their baby home, and Barack holding her, and wanting to be what he himself had never had--a good father. I also liked the metaphor of the rivers (maybe it was the oceans) of history meeting the tide of the future.

Even if Barack loses the election, he and Michelle have already given this country a great gift--a living template of how much we can acheive with good minds, great parents, strong faith, compassionate hearts, and persistent hard work. Slackers, look out!

You said the magic word, Arianna: AUTHENTIC!!!

The Obamas need to fully dispatch the most powerful aspect of their candidacy - their AUTHENTICITY, which enables the campaign to be run without the shackles of a script - of spin - of back-pedaling . . . .
If one doesn't want what they're offering then they need to just go on and vote another way. There's nothing more they need do, really. Every politician should learn a lesson in this and we voters wouldn't have to endure all the manipulative contortions we're inundated with.

A HOME RUN FOR MICHELLE OBAMA!! WHAT A GAL!!!
