On Monday, I asked for suggestions for the 5 word acceptance speech I would give at last night's Webby Awards. And you came through with an embarrassment of pithy riches -- offering up over 1,000 suggestions. Some were impassioned, some were funny, many were both -- and all were very creative. Color me impressed. And appreciative: thanks to everyone who sent one in.
It was a very tough call but, in the end, we decided to go with "President Obama... Sounds good, right?", submitted by Sunflower1 (your book is on the way).
The other finalists were: "Big Brother, we're watching you" (submitted by SilthyTove); "No country for old media" (jungpatawan); and "Fuck it... We'll liveblog it!" (LiarLiarIraqsOnFire)
And here are some of our other favorite 5 word speech submissions:
"Truth: How's that for Change?"
-skepticfromschenectady
"Flag pins can't deflate hope"
-outsidein
"Dissent: American as Apple Pie"
- RoloTomassi
"Well, I blog your milkshake"
-jungpatawan
"O.C.D. Blogging Cures A.D.D. Media"
-TomR
"Reality-based and lovin' it!"
- TomR
"8 years... Please, not 12!"
-KevInAk
"Life is short; Blog Hard!!"
-lonesomejames
"Outrage fatigue musn't cause complacency"
-anastasiabeaverhousen
"Censorship is for political cowards"
-Fightnmad
"Did McCain vote for us?"
-kufu
"Dodging sniper fire since 2005"
-LeoMarvin
"Derailing the Straight-Talk Express"
- Jacksonian
"Fair and balanced news...really"
-desertbreeze
"We bitterly cling to this"
- Jacksonian
"Fist bumpin' Republican dumpin' 2008"
- TomR
"Obama wins, shock and awe"
- Rockwell
"I'm making no decision tonight"
-BartLA
"Justice, where have you been?"
- segagman
"Unclog the public dialogue: blog"
-davidword

"We Busted Your Bluster, Buster!"
-- CrankyCurmudgeon
"Imagine all the people, blogging!"
- JoDeeVa
"We know Shia from Sunni"
-foolwriter
"Patriotism is courage in public"
--KLeethemedianstrip
"George Bush wrote this acceptance speech"
- GopherBroke
"Mainstream media, suck on this!"
-Incredulous

And I thought you would go with a 'safe' uncontroversial sound bite!
What was I thinking?
Flush the 'P' : G-O-BAMA
McCain -- Older than Spam
I *really* liked:
"Outrage fatigue musn't cause complacency"
More like..
I *really* live....
So, if this is "the one you went with," ("President Obama... Sounds good, right?"), then your mind was already made-up, regardless of what Hillary said or did.
- A Progessive Democrat, who would have/will support either Democratic candidate
And just what can HRC do? Lose, that's what. The people have seen through the deceit of HilBil and the Machine politics they can't let go of.
" I need five more words."
Imagine.." Mr. President, Barack Obama!"
You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
Thanks, Arianna and HuffPo-Peeps!
Dah-links, I love you!
Congrats, Sunflower1;}
Great job folks! Those were pretty funny. I saw this one somewhere:
January 20, 2009
End of an ERROR!
Now when are we going to launch the Huffington Post News Network on cable!!!!
We need to make some bumper stickers out of these. (As much as I hate bumper-sticker rhetoric.)
Also, I know I'm late (I've been mad busy lately), and I probably "Xeroxed" some of these, but...
"Change: as sexy as Arianna" ;)
"No more Bushes or Clintons"
"Obama: Much More Than Change"
"Peace, Love and Common Sense"
"Truth Has a Liberal Agenda"
"Barackin' In The Free World"
and I had a few others I forgot, but they probably sucked.
Dear Ludwig;
I like "Bill Maher for President! 2009"
LOL
late contributions:
-I don't drive a Volvo
-McCain: A four letter word
-Help us change the world

Your choice is good one, ad the others are entertaining, but the House voting today on impeachment, and I am afraid you not covering it front and center is aiding the Bushstopo's rape of our Constitution. I am aware that it has little chance of passage, but a public airing of the charges and the evidence of their accuracy is essential to our heirs having a full understanding of what a poor excuse for citizens we truly were! Absolute proof is publicly available on many of these charges, and should the country survive in anything like it's current form, our progeny have the right to know why they will be required to re-institute Democracy, that party hacks and cowardly citizens,(I include myself, I did not vote for this, but neither have I had the courage to incite the revolution our founding documents identify as our "DUTY" in these circumstances) add up to the loss of government of, by, and for the people, which we surely no longer can claim when over 80% disagree with our direction and it does not change.
For the second time in as many days, I beg you to cover these charges, a few at a time, and the evidence pertaining to them, you have the ability to stop these criminals from going quietly into that good night!
Amen, tea in the harbor.... ...I ALSO BEG THAT THESE CHARGES, ONE AT A TIME, BE TAKEN. WE CAN'T ALLOW THESE ARROGANT AND DANGEROUS PEOPLE, BUSH, CHENEY AND THEIR MINIONS GO "QUIETLY INTO THE NIGHT"
Thank you Foxy. two vices will do little, but beleive Ariana and her staff to be good Americans, perhaps enough others added to ours will soften te barriers that have so far emaciated the integrity of our congress!
I've been in my inbox all day, granted mostly circa Georgia's mental health care crisis, but you're the first I've seen of *that*.. Yikes.. :(
We will get you media-right-storm!
How about selling bumper stickers!
Five words?
Let's have more of these!
Missed it but my suggestion would be unoriginal,
......"Pre sident Obama sounds just right"
Here:
"Change we can believe in"
Anyways,..
In fifty some odd years do you know how many times I've heard this "change we can believe in spiel?" Ain't much changed except we got eight years of the chimp Bush. What makes you think the Demopublicans are actually going to change anything. Not in their interest buddy. Notice I said their interest, NOT OURS.
P.S.- I'm NOT supporting McCain either and I will VOTE.
In the words of our presumptive nominee YES WE CAN. Bill Clinton improved things. Republicans sneered at his plans and then the plans worked. We had the longest, strongest period of prosperity in American history. We in Florida achieved a victory for the UFW--I was in the demonstrations in Miami. I'm a proud Femocrat (my made-up term makes sense unlike TankRat's rantings) I'm also running for Democratic Party committewoman. Our interest is the COUNTRY'S interest, as we've proved many times.
Your skepticism is well warranted, but I think we should give Obama the benefit of the doubt.
He is doing a lot of the correct things, "they" are not going to just go away after the election and must be taken into account, it will not be easy or simple, but he has already started.
And don't forget, Obama is where he is largely because of 2 million regular people donating awesome amounts of time and energy and money. In a new way. As long as Rupert Murdoch is not successful in his dream to control the internet, as long as it remains relatively free, there is a chance. Internet nation will have it's say, and it will actually mean something to a President Obama.
Arianna,
e should turn them into slogans they're all right-on.. .but definitely Sunflower's is immediate and nails it.
Thanks for posting these....w
