How Long Before McCain Apologizes?

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

At the top of the Huffington Post we have John McCain's remark that he'd prefer a president who has a "solid grounding in my faith." I'm in New York, about to take a flight for Las Vegas (to give a speech, not to gamble). My question is: how long before McCain apologizes? Before I land?

P.S. I've just landed in Las Vegas and McCain has already clarified his statement.

It was a stupid thing to say, but lets be honest with ourselves. How many Presidents have we had who aren't Christians?

It's a number less than one. So does his statement really matter?

McCain has betrayed not only millions of Americans, but himself as well. We already have that in the White House - we don't need it again. And Arienna, while you're in Vegas, get some big hair - the old "do" is getting tiresome.

christians want a christian president. blacks would like a black president. democrats want a democratic president. what's new. I would love to see a non christian president. being a christian, being black being white, being straight, being gay, being a woman, a man....the rich, white heterosexual christian male is NOT the only formula for intelligent leaddership. what part of george bush's religion has helped us? how has his sexual preference helped anyone? how has his being a rich white man helped this country? we need courage, leadership and intelligence as requirements for our president, not his ethinticity, his orientation, his gender....a true leader can be white, black, straight, gay, man , woman, or athiest. leadership and bravery and integrity do not belong to straight white old christians.

This is section 11 of the Treaty of 1797 Between the United states and the Bey and people of Tripoli of Barbary

Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.

Unimaginable! How long before a United States presidential candidate is forced to apologize for suggesting that this nations future be placed in the hands of someone who advocates a religion which does not demand the death of those who disagree with its tenets and practice! A prospective president able to seriously, even publicly recommend the 10 Commandments? What could be more frightening and disgusting. Certainly an ostensibly enlightened man could never imagine the existence of an entity superior to an ostensibly enlightened man! We must not permit unopposed the return of a belief system based upon universally agreed upon definitions of right and wrong. We have devoted far too much industry to the institution of moral equivalence to risk a return to the black days in which clarity and common sense governed our actions.
Rest assured that we on the left will not permit God to challenge our views of right and wrong.

As for the Stanley comment on O'Reilly, commentator O'Reilly is one of those who misrepresents black America to his largely white audience. As Rev. Jesse Jackson said, O'Reilly ignored the 50th anniversary of the Little Rock school desegregation in 1957, has largely ignored a recent Supreme Court decision which re-segregates schools, and offers little commentary on any positive developments in black America. O'Reilly was discussing his own set of pre-expectations on his visit to Sylvia's Restaurant in Harlem when he said he was surprised that it was just like any other restaurant and no one was saying: "M'fer, get more me tea." He revealed the soft bigotry of his own low expectations. At his age, wouldn't he have a broader framework to discuss such issues instead of constantly characterizing African-Americans through the lens of hip-hop?

Individuals are free to have preferences. Others may like or dislike those preferences, may characterize them as good or bad, etc. The individual who expresses preferences has nothing to apologize for. People don't have to lie and deny that they have preferences so that the Arianna Huffingtons of this world won't demand apologies.

Yup, Arianna. The statement was just released by McCain's mouthpiece.

"Dance, varmint! I said dance!"

Ah, to be the communications director for a schizophrenic GOP presidential candidate.

Larry Craig must have lent her his tap shoes.

Speaking as a heathen-american, I'd like to
point out for Mr. McCain's benefit, as well
as for the benefit of the religiously-inclined
in america, that freedom OF religion also
implies freedom FROM it. I don't care what
your faith is, what your denomination is,
how many followers you have, or how much money
you've fleeced them for, organized religion
is an identifiable and politically significant
phenomenon in our times. More than once
it's been reported that these people are
on a social engineering tear, and they have
Large Sums Of Money to perpetuate their
activities with. I think at the point when
there's an ATM machine in the church lobby to
facilitate 'giving', a Good Hard Look needs
to be applied to whatever kind of misbegotten
activity is being allowed to sally forth, here, in the name of God, of course. I call it Jesus, Inc. And, it has its' counterparts on foreign
shores, there's Allah, Inc., and Jehovah, Inc., and doubtless Buddha, Inc. Corporatization of
religion.

The FUN part is when these clowns line up
at Congress' door, asking for a taxpayer 'stealth haze' to hide behind so they
can work their 'magic'.

I'm all for religious freedom, but I'm also
all for public accountability, and if there's
ANY religious groups out there that are only
open for business because they've worked out
the Government Donut angle, then it's time to
let old Darwin take over, there. NO handouts
for the churchies and get em off the Senate
floor while you're at it. The Church kind of
ran England, they financed Mexico in the US/Mexico war, and they've started crap all over the world, time to replace 'amen' with 'hey, man, put DOWN the religious literature, my WALLET, and those firearms'....

Suppose McCain had said that he would prefer a Muslim President.

Would you ask for his apology?

I thought the nation was founded on Enlightenment principles, not Christian. You see it in Declaration of Independence and Constitution. So tired of that "Christian Nation" garbage. It is a lie

I agree MCain should quickly apologize

But these religious (mind poison) tapes are laid down before the age of 5.

People like McCain can't help himself- no matter how hard he tries the pathology ultimately leaks out.

The answer lies in David Boulton's work which emphasizes healthy global early childhood education. Maybe our best and our last hope.

Sen McCain would wash an actual remains of an egg from his face at once. A figurative egg on the Senator's face is different than literal thing to the Senator. Arianna, we may expect an apology for stating that he prefers a Christian to a Muslim POTUS from Sen McCain when hell freezes over. Yes, I'm fascinated by the figurative in politics today. We shouldn't be suprised if Sen McCain amplifies his statement about wanting a Christian POTUS by stating in detail which sort of beliefs & behavior he would prefer in a Christian POTUS. He's aiming for the votes & money of the religious right, fundies of Republican Party. He feels that the fundies could get him the Republican Partie's nomination for POTUS in '08.
