Sunday Roundup

Posted: 05/29/11 12:05 AM ET

This week Bibi Netanyahu addressed Congress; President Obama extended the Patriot Act for another four years; prosecutors moved another step closer to indicting John Edwards for misusing campaign funds to cover up his affair with Rielle Hunter; and Newt Gingrich scrambled to reconcile his claims of being "very frugal" with his $500,000 revolving line of credit at Tiffany. Meanwhile, in a political version of The Hangover sequel, the GOP's leadership, drunk on Tea (Party), did something wild and crazy -- creating a plan to gut and privatize Medicare, and pressuring elected Republicans to vote for it -- only to wake up in New York's 26th District with a pounding morning-after headache. If Democrats don't provide a cure by agreeing to deep cuts in Medicare as part of a deal to raise the government's debt ceiling, this GOP hangover could last until November 2012.

What I want to know is: Why didn't the republicans realize the hugh deficit durnig the Bush years. All of a sudden, the deficit has become a problem for America. And...this is not the first time this country has experienced a deficit.

Tax the top 1%.
10:14 PM on 05/29/2011
Fine. Tax the top 1%. But realize that is a drop in the debt bucket.

nick1911,
I understand. However, I've heard no discussion regarding repeal of the Bush's tax cuts. Sorry, I'm mistaken. I do realize the idea has been mentioned. I do believe it to be greed that has overcome the American Values which have been (for centuries) the basis of America's growth. When people become greedy, values are set aside and laws are more easily broken. Hence, we wind up with corporations/Wall Street robbery. This is not what our ForeFathers expected for such a great country. When average Americans believe and live by American values (trusting) and corporations/Wall Street individuals believe in greed, you will find a lopsided economical system that hurts and angers hard-working Americans. [To actually know that the wealthy are becoming more wealthy on the backs of middle-class citizens causes me great anger.] I pay my fair share of taxes because I understand the reasons for taxes. I would be more than willing to pay more taxes because I know that police, firemen/women, want pay raises like anybody else. I simply want those corporations and most wealty people to pay their fair share of taxes as well. They are the so-called job creators.

Finally, [I am a Christian; the Bible reads that Jesus said that it would be easier for a camel to climb through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. Matt: 19:24] BTW, in Hebrew, word for camel is "coarse thread".

Where's the story about how the Republican Party is going to trigger the next recession by blocking the raising of the debt ceiling? This of course is another of their election tactics to put an end to the slight headway we are making out of the previous economic disaster they championed.
10:15 PM on 05/29/2011
Right. After two and a half years its not our fault at all. Our guy has zero blame. Right...

Huffpost's Sunday Roundup seems to solidify the fact that US pols are hellbent to achieve
third world status ASAP. Then those who can may live in southern France or Tuscany, and
thoroughly enjoy themselves. We really need professional help, badly.

They might be helpful in some instances, but what I had in mind was a cadre of
politically, financially, and legally well educated people (a la Elizabeth Warren),
not subject to lobbying, election (that apparently no longer works), or political
pressure, completely transparent, and not self-serving. This would be a profes-
sional position on a career track and well compensated. Tall order, but we need
professionals, not criminals.

The Republican overreach on Medicare doesn't just offer the Democratic party electoral opportunities, but an opportunity to revamp the program itself.

The chief actuary of the program has estimated some 15% to 30% of health care expenditures in the program are wasteful. The simple fact that Medicare pays for procedures, drugs and devices with no proven medical benefits while leaving substantial gaps in coverage for Parts A, B and D is astounding.

Fraud enforcement needs to be stepped up drastically. Reimbursements should be cut to specialists and raised for General Practitioners. Coverage gaps need to be filled and prescription drug prices need to be negotiated.

This is a moment where the Democratic party needs to swing for the fences and aim to make Medicare more efficient.

the demos will blow it and cave.

they have to they are paid for by corp america. their voters have not figured that out yet.

obama has a distaste for liberals and progressives as his staff does. again their voters have not figured that out yet.

follow the money then you will find out who both parties represent. $$$$$$$$$$$ always.

Sadly, I'm coming to that realization, too. But, considering the alternative of the Iquitarod Queen and her Court Jester in power, things could be a lot worse.

I have come to believe that no one makes it to the top in Washington unless they are already a part of the club.

Republican or Democrats it really doesn't matter. Our government is broken and rotting from its greed and corruption. Unfortunately, most American are suffering because of this.

Dems and Progressives, call the GOP out on this one! There's no way the Koch brothers, bankers and wall street are going to let the global economy go. Not a real profitable thing to do.

B. Netanyahu was grand standing for his political base in Israel....at the expense of insulting our President. I am much less sympathetic to the Israeli cause as a result. He does not want a Palestinian state and will never offer anything that will lead to peace.

You're right about that. And, that's always been the case.
03:16 PM on 05/29/2011
"I am much less sympathetic to the Israeli cause . . ."

What exactly is this "cause" you are referring to? Netanyahu's party came in second in the last election and was then appointed to form a coalition government. (Sound somewhat familiar?)

The majority of Israelis -- not their lobby -- strongly agree with President Obama's non-radical position.

I hope you are right about that. But there seems to be a very strong rightwing coalition who oppose any concessions towards a lasting peace. And BN seems to be their leader. But thanks for the ray of hope.
