Sunday Roundup

Posted: 09/02/2012 12:00 am

This week, Clint Eastwood's rambling chat with an empty chair spawned a run of comical memes. But the moment was actually an apt visual metaphor for the convention itself, with the empty chair representing not Invisible Obama but the Invisible Issues that went unmentioned -- including the issues HuffPost sought to put a spotlight on this week with our Shadow Convention: the corrupting influence of money on our politics, the persistence of poverty in America, and the disastrous war on drugs. It was a site-wide effort. To see the breadth of what our HuffPost editors did, click here. And click here to watch HuffPost Live's amazing, comprehensive coverage. And because the neglect is a bipartisan affair, we're doing it again during the DNC, taking on these issues from a whole different set of angles. Don't miss HuffPost Live's Shadow Coverage this coming Tuesday-Thursday between 12-4 p.m. EST.

Thank you for spotlighting the issues that are making the majority of voters feel helpless against the steamrolling political machines. We need journalists to challenge and debunk the wild statements being declared as true. Even members of Congress are frustrated by the hardening attitude of "it is my way or no way". Whatever happened to doing what is right for the people?

The amount of money being spent on campaigning is obscene. Communities already struggling to balance budgets are being forced to incur the expense of providing security for the candidates. The DNC and RNC monies should be paying those costs instead of buying more ads - that might earn more votes. I no longer see the presence of any candidate in my town or state as an honor but as the loss of a job for a policeman, fireman, teacher or other unfortunate citizen.

Today I read two articles from the September 13, 2012 issue of Rolling Stone, "Greed and Debt: The True Story of Mitt Romney and Bain Capital" (http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/greed-and-debt-the-true-story-of-mitt-romney-and-bain-capital-20120829 ) and "How the GOP became the Party of the Rich" (http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/how-the-gop-became-the-party-of-the-rich-20111109 w). Enlightening.

We need truth, honesty and accountability. Those in the media are in the position to fulfill those needs

i enjoyed watching the Rep.convention - great speeches and at times it looked like a party. i followed the Shadow Convention too.the bottom line:1.the disastrous war on drugs was not mentioned at the Rep.convention.2.the same can be said about the insane $ in politics but who'd cut into their own flesh and especially at a convention.furthermore $ is a good thing - right? the advertising media, news outlets, the people who build the million $ stage etc.3.the poverty in the US got somewhat mentioned i think in MR's speech (23mio.un- or underemployed).he said he's gonna create 12mio. new jobs in his first 4 years.is it possible? yes.R/R a.cut taxes( mostly corporate, capital gains) , b.cut regulation and oversight(government) , c.push forward domestic energy which creates lots of jobs like seen in dakota and investing will start again across the board.not all will be high paying jobs but at least people get one again and maybe opportunities follow - especially regarding the youth.hopefully they're not to comfortable in social media lala land and get busy.

It's a visually apt metaphor for the Republican presidential campaign: running against an imaginary Obama.

don't you see? Mr.Eastwood is really not voting for Romney or Paul. He just did that to stir things up.this guys couldn't even talk of what policies or solutions to what ails us all right now,and he knew that beforehand.see what happened, now everybody is talking about how empty and full of lies the RNC was.Mr.Eastwood,thank you so much....

Well said! I would love to see both parties talk about the issues and exactly how they plan to deal with them. It's time we get a real choice... although frankly, the closest to a choice we will get is if we elect Obama. Otherwise, this becomes the United States of Corporations.

Yes, I thought about it. The news is today but my family is the future. So you are right, let us create and continue a dialogue. It's about time we did this.

If Mitt didn't once mention the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, how do you think he will treat the American servicemen returning from these wars?
Romney believes in rewarding success. That said, we can hardly believe that Romney would treat the GI's with any respect at all.

Progressives,

In Todays Sunday talk and especially after the GOP Convention one thing has become clear. We need a Glossary to better understand the conversation. Coupled with the Re.th.ug Playbook it helps.
SPIN = Lying for my Purpose

POLITICAL or POLITICS = Lying for a Purpose

GAFFE = To inadvertently tell the truth a about a topic or subject.

BOTH SIDES = term used to Equivocate. Usually used as a means to qualify a statement, justify the indefensible or appear even-handed.

WORSE OFF = term used to ignore the economic starting point; predicated on the nai.vety of the listener to know for themselves the levity of the economic starting point so as to gauge it as better or worse.

NEED A BUSINESSMAN = term used to ignore the causal effect of 2008; thereby setting the premise that business (wall st. gambler) had nothing to do with 2008s economic collapse therefore a businessman is needed to correct what may have been a businessmans contribution to the collapse.

FLIP FLOP = term used to say that a politician has gone whatever way the wind blows. Misnomer when used to describe someone who has changed their minds, in particular, when the mind change has reoccurred again and again.

Summation of events of the weeks roundup: 1) Clint had no business on that stage. I think it hurt the Republicans. It definitely took away from the message they want to get across; 2) Did any of you catch Erin Burnett crying after Ann Romney's speech and of course her misquoted information pertaining to Federal Reserve? 3) How about Congressman's Rubio's misquote for big government and the usage of "these" United States; whereas, the US Constitution states throughout "the" United States; 4) What about during Governor Romney's speech he mentioned us as being "immigrants". My family has been around 5 generations and we were all born in the United States; 5) what about the Gonvernor's 5th plan of action if elected - repeal Obamacare? He will need 2/3 vote of both Houses of Congress, and right now, the Dem's control the Senate and Republican's control the.House. By the way, I am disabled and on medicare and have been unemployed since 2008 due to downsizing - corporate America at its finest

If you put Obama back in charge you will be put on the "they are not worth spending money on" list.

We have a broken government system, disheartening as that is to say. We have become surfs (99%'ers) to the lords (1%'ers) but we're not the only ones. The global economic picture is as or nearly as dire as our own. If we don't learn to work together here at home, how in the world is the "world" going to continue? Money and power does, in fact, tend to corrupt and, if unchecked, can corrupt absolutely. We're very close to that now...what are we going to do? We have to speak our minds, insist our government by OF us and FOR us, and learn to think critically on our own. We need some heroes, men and women we can look up to and revere for their ethics, wisdom and leadership...speak up now or we will forever lose our peace.

Hey, How about this as an idea for the Democratic Convention. We could have Morgan Freeman come out with a chair on each side of the podium. One chair labeled "for it" and the other chair labeled "against it". He could turn to one side and ask Mitt sitting in the "for it" chair where he stands on an issue. Then he could turn to the other side with the "against it" chair and ask, Mitt where do you stand on the same issue as I ask the the other chair.

Clint's speech was more of a metaphor for this Congress, A Do - Nothing Congress. How many times do you have to pass an anti - abortion bill? Wouldn't you think we'd get it after the first time? How many times do you have to pass a repeal Obamacare bill? We get it after the first time, too. This Congress took more days off in two years than George Bush did in eight. Thank God, the only things they didn't do is give themselves another raise. Maybe they passed that too and I just missed it.

The cool thing is that Governor Romney and Paul Ryan gave speeches to a national audience. There were well done documentary films and Ann Romney spoke her heart out yet all that's remembered is Dirty Harry growing old.

It was riveting TV in it's way but I can't help but wonder if the Governor had been better, if he had announced some striking solution to something, anything, maybe there wouldn't be all of these residual memories of Clint dragging done this event.

The severely conservative Governor could announce any striking solution to any problem in his sppech because, he doesn't have any. All his got is what his Republican establishment has, Double Down on the failed and much discredited George Bush'sTrickle Down economic theory. he has been told that if he wants to win the nomination and possibly the election, he has tote the line of Austerity policies that The Chairman of the Federal Reserve just pooh poohed as wrong - headed and which has failed miserably in Europe. For a Party that detests the European model, why on Earth would they be embracing the European model?

I am a devoted fan of A.H., and have read most of her books at laeast once.

The same is true of C.E., especially after he hit it out of the park in his directing role of "Midnight in the Garden..."

So to one incredible superstar, in assessment of another, are you totally convinced that this was his worst performance ever, or could it just as possibly have been his BEST??

After a 24 hour cooling off, I just can't HELP but consider the latter!

Scammin' the scammers! (Ought we really expect anything less from Mr. Eastwood??)
04:03 PM on 09/04/2012
I hope you are right. I would like to think that of him. Glad you reminded me of Midnight. I had forgotten he directed that and I did like that.

Paragraph after paragraph, on and on and on. And nobody will address the riddle - or won't go near the question. "How do we get corporate money out of our political system?" Until this happens, we the people will continue to have absolutely no say in the affairs of our country.

Now that the Supremes have proved incapable of honest assessment on the issue, there really is only one more remaining avenue to correct the gargantuan injustice that is "Citizens U."

Legislate a Constitutional amendment of the U.S. Constitution. If you will, a type of 'personhood' amendment, granting such status (PERSON) as solely belonging to individual, living breathing humans, and NOT POSSIBLY to any organization, corporation, or other collection thereof.
06:52 PM on 09/02/2012
Would that also make it wrong for Unions to promote politics ?

Don't see how they proved incapable of honest assessment or why this is an auspicious time to correct the CU decision. The Supreme court, by definition, only makes honest assessments, the make or break law.

But trying to leap over the various conservative State Houses who want to pass a "personhood amendment", something that will take power away from the organizations that assign lobbyists and funding to politicians, I think is a bridge too far.

They might compromise by offering that they will write a law that says that any living breathing human, whether gestating or not, is a person with all the Constitutional writes a person is allowed, and then recommend to the Supreme Court that Corporations may not qualify. I don't think they would go further than that.
04:34 PM on 09/02/2012
We need to put the Citizens United issue first on state ballots as a states rights issue and disallow outside money coming into states for political purposes. Then on a national ballot for repeal. This is one of the most unfair laws to ever be put on the books and could utimately destroy our Republic. If that won't work the another way is to use the Middle-class and Poor's only power. The rich need us to buy to sustain them. Let's make things last longer, occupy our homes, have family and friends over and start saving. We saw how the Republican machine attacked Akin for disclosing their real aganda. Just think, what they would do if the beast (Wall Street) starts falling. I'm sure the Supreme Court would take another look at this bill and sooner not later.

I agree, but getting it on the ballot in enough States should prove very difficult.

The only way the Supreme Court will revisit this is when the Democratic Party wins elections so consistently and consistently underspending Republicans that it is apparent that money alone won't turn elections. At that point, look for Republican plan II.
