This week saw the regeneration of the Democrats' bicameral backbone, with the historic passage of legislation setting a deadline for the withdrawal of combat troops from Iraq. They are going to need every freshly-fortified vertebra as the president prepares to flex his veto power -- a move he's convinced will give him the upper hand in negotiations due to what an administration official describes as "a segmented market" among Democrats. Of course, this is the same president who interpreted the 2006 election as a mandate to escalate our involvement in Iraq. Speaking of "segmented markets," I can't wait to catch George Tenet on 60 Minutes tonight. Judging by his excerpts, his j'accuse of Cheney will be, all together now: a slam dunk.
