Sunday Roundup

r u awke??? The Obama camp clearly has a sense of humor. Not only did it start sending out its text message announcement about Biden at, that's right, 3 a.m., there is also something delicious about using this truncated form of communication to disclose the selection of one of the most garrulous politicians in history. He's also "articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy." And a very good pick, especially given the urgent need to put an end to McCain's perceived strength on national security. Expect to see "Kinnock," "Anita Hill," and "Dunkin' Donuts" spike on Google Trends. The DNC starts tomorrow, and HuffPost is hosting a discussion on New Media, and also offering harried conventioneers a place to unplug and recharge at The Oasis.

Arianna,

Sorry to hear about your injury but it's good that you are taking a lesson worth sharing from it. Slowing down and relaxing from time to time is part of the balance in life that most of us miss.

What I think is happening is:

In the 1960's the Southern Democrats left the Democratic party because of the Civil Rights Act and became Republicans.

Now, because the Civil Rights Act gave black people the right to vote and a black man the right to be President, the "white working people"" (as HRC says) will vote Republican.

I'm sure that's fuelling a lot of the PUMAs though they'd never admit it. Racism is often tolerated so when it wasn't this time, they felt like since Obama wasn't losing, it had to be because of sexism. They took it personally as an attack against them so every single horrible thing that could be insinuated against Obama they believed.

The thing is, if a white male beat Hillary in the primary, they'd accept it.

Because Obama is a black man, they see it as the ultimate insult and therefore cannot and will not accept it.

Now the MSM is trying to make a big deal out of Biden being picked over Hilary. First, of all if Obama was considering Hilary, she had already been vettted for past 16 months. Secondly, HIlary talking about catharsis and her voters needed recognition. I have one quesiton, why isn't Dodd, Biden, Kucinich, Edwards and all others, including candidates on the Republic side, demanding that their voters be recognized,... this is so totally ridiculous.

Why don't they have a special night for all of other Democratic candidates and their voters. I am sure their voters feel and felt just as strongly about their Candidate. Please stop this stupid madness and move on to try to put the Presidency back into the Democrat hands to change the horrific past 8 years, my GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A "very good pick?" Riiight - now Obama can't criticize McC for supporting the war, can he? And just when the public had finally caught on. Brilliant!

Biden came out a long time ago and said that he wished he could have taken back his vote.
05:04 PM on 08/24/2008
Dear Obama,

Your VP choice is just terrible! You had everyone to chose from, Governor: Kathleen Sebelius, Governor Tim Kaine, Jim Webb and the list goes on...
You picked Jon Biden!!!! Jon Biden is a good man, nothing personal against him.
But Barack, he represents EVERYTHING BUT CHANGE.
He is the democratic version of John McCain - Older, white man, who has made a career in the Senate.
I expected more from you. I wanted to see brave Barack, not safe Barack.
I wish you would stop trying to come to the center and just take a stand.
Example: Oil drilling, NOT OK! NOT OK BEFORE -NOT OK NOW- NOT OK EVER!
Doesn't solve the current crisis and it will not solve the issue 15 years from now either,
when the oil will actually be available.
I am AGAIN, so disappointed. You have become the better of 2 bad choices.
Where is the man who had the guts, the spirit, the courage?
I wish you would stop playing safe politics. The country is a mess
you can be bold, people desperately need change, do not under estimate us.
This was your chance to show to the Republicans and the to the undecided voters that you were
different, you had what it takes to shake things up, to put your money where you mouth is, but no, you bent over and gave in.
So sad.

That's "Joe" Biden, not "Jon" Biden.

As a "Certified Distressed Property Expert " -- (and certified Republican?) -- I'd think you'd be a bit more careful with the details.

Snide insults, whenever the spelling police arrive you know they have nothing to contribute.
05:47 PM on 08/24/2008
AdorablePatty,

Not all older, white men are the same. Joe Biden made a career in politics actually representing his constituents (including, unfortunately, the banking industry that is so much a part of Delaware). He is, for the most part, a liberal Democrat. I can respectfully disagree with some of his opinions and still vote for him in good conscience. His long knowledge of congressional politics will be very helpful in implementing Obama's policies. Keep in mind that, except for the bizarre situation we've had for the last seven and a half years, the VP does not make policy.

Athena sprang fully formed from the brow of Zeus. We're not going to see that happen. Other than new-born infants, everyone arrived at today via yesterday, with baggage. Unlike McCain, Biden isn't dragging his 1968 suitcase out at every opportunity to show how badly he was hurt and how heroic, and how that excuses every inanity that comes out of his mouth.
04:46 PM on 08/24/2008
Faux Noise is taking every opportunity to create divisions within the Democratic Party. Now they feign so much hurt for Hillary!!! Just hysterical! Sorry Faux, it won't work this time!
05:49 PM on 08/24/2008
Oh you sound so educated using the word faux! How do you account for people like me then? Hillary is a literal democratic Hall of famer she has fought for democratic causes for three decades. Obama is a BUSH leauge rookie compared to Mrs. Clinton. Name me one relevant accomplishment Barrack has? Yet Mrs. Clinton was a highly influential first lady during a prosperous period where the budget was balanced. Now they take Joe Biden! who has made raceist comment's about Indian people, has a temper problem and is on tape saying McCain is a better choice! Then all they muster is an attack accusing McCain of what? Having a bunch of homes and living the AMERICAN DREAM!! I have two homes and three investment properties that I rent myself!!! Since when is being succesful un American or out of touch? This is why my party has only won 2 of the of the last 7 presidential elections. One last thing U-R-1-2 If you read the 8 page article in the NY Times on Obama they confirm how Obamas politics are a deprature from the centirst views of the clintons and a move to the hard Left. So if you wanna kid youreself and think that every democrat is on the hard Left you do that but I promise you there are many of us that will never vote for Obama, however this is not to say we will vote McCain either but and independant perhaps.
06:08 PM on 08/24/2008
You claim Mrs. Clinton "... was a highly influential first lady during a prosperous period where the budget was balanced."

I suppose you think that experience should have clinched the nomination for her.

Just goes to show, life ain't always fair and you don't always get what you want.

Grow up.

Nothing like being obvious in trying to put a wedge between the Democrats. Who do they think they are fooling? Biden was the obvious choice, given Hillary and her Bill baggage. I have to admit I'm surprised by the continuing animosity of many of the Clinton backers. Are they really going to vote for John McCain who hates everything the Democrats stand for. That just doesn't make any sense. This is the most important election since 1968 for the future of this country, and we Democrats need to start thinking about what a McCain presidency would look like. It would be scary, with his bluster and shot from the hip foreign policy, coupled with his disdain for the working class as he caters to the needs up his upper 1% friends and corporate benefactors. Plus he would get to pick a Supreme Court Justice or two and that would be the end of Roe vs. Wade. McCain would be a first rate horror show if he is elected and Hillary's die hard fans need to think about that.

They're mostly not Clinton backers. They are Republicans trying to split the party.
04:30 PM on 08/24/2008
They wish Hillary had been the pick because they can find a great deal to rant about. They were prepared to run against her and have the "ammunition" (most of it seedy, no doubt). Now they don't know what to do. It's not like that have a lot of resources, that bunch.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to take advantage of "The Oasis". Apparently, the IRS took most of my disability check for this month to pay back taxes, so, not only will I be missing the Democratic National Convention, I could also be missing electricity and food. But, in the current environment, that money would be spent on the amount of money we pay for 1 1/2 Blackwater mercenaries for a day. It's also more than what many corporations pay in taxes - not that this is a sign that things are royally screwed up or anything.

Biden is an excellent pick but I wish it were the other way around and it was Biden for pres. Hes a compassionate man and is in tune with Americans. He knows the opponent and wont back down from McCains negative add campaign. Joe will take it to this so called American hero. I say so called, because if being captured makes you a hero, then so be it. Anyway, McCain deserves credit for his time served but it doesnt make him an automatic presidential candidate. If we have any hope left for America, the republican party must be run out of the white house or the average America will soon be less than average to the rest of the world.
02:02 PM on 08/24/2008
As for your "so called american hero" comment, read the man's bio before you make such statements. You betray your ignorance. True being a vet does not automatically qualify him as a presidential candidate, but if you truly knew anything about his military record you really can't question his heroism.
02:22 PM on 08/24/2008
Heroism in military service, admirable though it may be, provides NO qualification for the presidency of the US. McCain's constant use of his POW experience as an excuse for his gaffes, his support of failed policies, and his ignorance of geopolitical realities does nothing but disrespect his service and that of every other veteran, including myself.

I signed up for the Obama Veep notification.

I felt less than special to get the long awaited message while I was asleep. I learned of the pick from the breakfast mannequinns on network TV after waking up.

If Obama had informed his supporters a full 24 hours in advance, he would have energized his core supporters in time for the convention. Instead, he only succeeded in making his supporters feel used.

Geez, I'm not a bigh fan of Obama, but get over yourself! Get out there and get him elected. Along side McSame, the man is a Saint!

People are so sensative these days! I agree with bear, get over yourself. You try sending millions of text messages in secret. Jeez. Hope it works out perfectly for you!

Hi. This assessment isn't entirely accurate. My email came across:
Saturday, August 23, 2008 2:48:45 AM [View Source]
I copied this date and time from the actual email. I stayed up, refreshing my email dozens of times, fell asleep and was awoken by some announcement....at 2:57 on, I think, MSNBC. I went to my email and the Obama campaign had sent the Biden announcement. I think it is mere opinion that the "3 a.m." coincidence was coordinated....Let's stir the pot, but let's get the right ingredients.

In Texas messages came in before 2am.
The Obama headquarters are in Chicago - CENTRAL TIME ZONE.
California got the messages before Midnight - PACIFIC TIME ZONE
Not everyone lives on the east coast!
The media on the east coast said 3am because they are in the eastern time zone.

Obama's team in Chicago sent the messages out before 2am central time :)

What I like about Obama's choice is that he and Biden like each other. Also he didn't pick a yes man. Great choice. Obama/Biden a winning ticket!!!!

Really great to watch Tom Brokaw try and trash democrats and Obama with both Caroline Kennedy and Nancy Pelosi by dropping in little last comments before jumping to another subject. Way to ruin your rep, Tom.

Journalists are not without prejudice. The MSM including the AP coverage shows a political bias, a generational bias, a corporate bias and "I never ever thought that I would see a black man challenge the US presidency in my lifetime" bias.
