Increasingly desperate, John McCain and the GOP are throwing the kitchen sink at Barack Obama. No wonder they called Joe the Plumber. So this week brought racist mailers, a tidal wave of robocalls, more Bill Ayers, Sarah Palin's love of the "pro-American areas of this great nation," and McCain's outlandish claim that ACORN is "destroying the fabric of democracy." Not unwarranted wiretapping, waterboarding, extraordinary rendition, or the denial of habeas corpus. ACORN. Bringing this toxic collection together in one despicable no-goodie bag was Rush Limbaugh, who charged that Obama -- aided and abetted by Ayers and ACORN -- is "smack dab in the middle" of a 30-year plot to teach black children to "hate, hate, hate" America. It's going to take more than a plumber to pull McCain's -- and his party's -- reputation out of the sewer.

The owner of a firm that the California Republican Party hired to register tens of thousands of voters this year was arrested in Ontario late last night on suspicion of voter registration fraud.

State and local investigators allege that Mark Jacoby fraudulently registered himself to vote at a childhood California address where he no longer lives so he would appear to meet the legal requirement that signature gatherers be eligible to vote in California.

Jacoby's arrest by state investigators and the Ontario Police Department comes after dozens of voters said they were duped into registering as Republicans by his firm, Young Political Majors, or YPM. The voters said YPM tricked them by saying they were signing a petition to toughen penalties against child molesters. The firm was paid $7 to $12 for every Californian it registered as a member of the GOP.

Several agencies had launched investigations into Jacoby's activities, including the Los Angeles County district attorney's office, which issued the warrant for his arrest earlier this month on felony charges of voter registration fraud and perjury.

This should be looked into further. McCain is a Republican and this firm was hired by the Republicans. So it is rightful to assume that McCain is in favor of tearing at the fibers of our democracy. I call for all of McCain's financial records and those of Cindy's be audited to verify yes/no their involvement in this travesty of democracy. Right? Hmmmmmmm? Hey Huchabee! Here is a story for next weeks show!

Would not be the first to do so ... In 1972 thousands of democrats were summarily dropped from the registered voter list in St. Louis. Trickster won.

What happens when the people making the big bucks and paying the big taxes and creating the jobs say we have had enough and quit working? Ever read "Atlas Shrugged"?

Perhaps the better question is what happens when the Chairman of the Federal Reserve (Alan Greenspan) models the American economy on "Atlas Shrugged," (his favorite book) but fails to factor in human greed? Then you get what we are now experiencing. "Big taxes" did not cause the collapse of Lehman Brothers or Wachovia any more than they caused the meltdown of Enron. Actually, you could make the case for the opposite because actual corporate taxes are at historic lows. And trading toxic securities is not my idea of the type of jobs we need to be creating.

I feel like we are trying to go the way of the European Socilaist countries. Yes those countries have a lot of entitlement programs but there is a big difference in our tax policies. Our bottom tax bracket is 0%, Most European countries have a bottom tax bracket of about 35%. So everyone pays taxes - not just the rich.

It is soooo depressing to know that McCain "represents" Arizona when so many of us absolutely detest him and the type of vitriolic hatred he tacitly condones. I can only hope that half of Alaska feels the same way about Palin. From the land of Goldwater, Udall, Rhodes, Babbit and Napolitano, I can only say that he's a rich carpetbagger and isn't an Arizonan.

"It's not the people who vote that count. It's the people who count the votes." This has been attributed to Stalin, but I don't know if he is the one who said it. After seeing "Hacking Democracy" there's no question in my mind that the statement is true, if the attribution isn't.

McCain has created such an atmosphere of hatred (remember when Bush was running it was the gay marriage amendment and immigration) - how does he expect us to believe that he is the man who will "reach across party lines" and bring this country back together????? All of the people spouting his bullet points without even reading about them makes me sad, hopefully, the intelligent people will all be out voting!

I agree, based on McCain's behavior in this campaign, heck in his debates with Obama, he HAS NOT shown himself to be someone who "reaches across party lines". He can't even LOOK at his opponent in a debate. How is he going to bring opposing sides and positions together?

Unfortunately for McCain, he CONTINUES TO SHOW US WHO HE IS. He has shown himself to be a petty, small, divisive man, with no clear grasp of economic issues facing the average American. NOT the qualities one looks for in a leader and not good news for him. Not good news at all.

I like your commentary Ari.
Here is a question for you. If Obama wins and we establish a BIGGER government, and since we all know that government knows what is right for us, then what will the media do?
In other words if someone disagrees with what the government says and decides to blog about it and write nasty comments about it then wouldn't it be in the best interest for government to censure or get rid of the negative people. Maybe the government should only hire the people to distribute the news that they agree with. It sounds like the media on the right maybe should be looking for a new job.

Just start reminding everyone you know that the lines will be long at the voting booth. Be prepared to stand there for however long it takes. With all of the new people that have signed up to support Obama, just this month, they say it will be worse than usual. Let your boss know you will be there until you vote, take snacks and water. Please start encouraging everyone you know to be prepared and to stay as long as it takes..if you leave, we lose.

PLEASE vote early if you can can and call every single person you can think of who supports Obama/Biden and ask them to vote early or at least go to the polls early. We can't do enough to make sure enough people get out and get their vote counted. " We can do it if we get off our cans!" (Thanks to Ed Pastor, Az Rep. -D)

Rush Limbaugh saying Obama is "smack dab in the middle" of a 30-year plot to teach black children to "hate, hate, hate" only reveals him for the demagogue he is.And it will speak volumes about McCain, his campaign, and the GOP if not immediately denounced in the harshest terms.

Am I supposed to believe it's the Obama campaign that put Joe into the spotlight? Btw just what are the attacks on Joe the Plumber by the Obama campaign that Mccain is referencing in his latest stump speeches?

in fact, the "attacks" come from both conservative and liberal media and constitute revelation of the facts about Joe the Plumber's true identity..such as that he is not a licensed plumber, he is not in the process of buying his boss's business, he does not make anywhere near $250 net per year and he is almost 2 years in arrears on his own taxes. Truth can hurt sometimes...but since when did the truth become a "smear?"

Steffi, there's a flaw in your question. By asking what attacks McCain is referencing, you are assuming that McCain's flurry of panicked slurs have some basis in reality.

McCain is the one who put "Joe the Plumber Whazzelburger (sp)" in the spotlight...by invoking him by FULL name...WITHOUT this private citizen's permission!

So if Joe the P. wants to blame anyone, blame McCain.

I hear that Joe the P. works under his employer's license -- I'm not in a position to know Ohio law, so I won't throw stones at that. But whatever is coming his way, he can thank McCain for it. And McCain further lied about how Joe the P. and Obama came to talk. Joe the P. approached Obama, and Obama answered HONESTLY...rather than pander like McCain who pretty much promised Joe the P. he'd help him get his business.

So, why does Joe the P. rank higher than I do, Sen. McCain? Or any other hard-working American?

Ha, another great vetting process. Turns out Joe the supposed Plumber used to live in Alaska. Who the hell is running McCain's campaign? Although I'm glad he/she is.

As a pro-Obama, anglo, evangelical Christian person of faith raising 3 multi-racial children 40+ years after Rosa Parks and 120 years after the Civil War, I am deeply saddened by the depth of the racism I am witnessing in America right now. John McCain (for whom I used to have a deep respect) needs to find what obvious little faith in the God he claims to love, bend his knee and beg for forgiveness. Then he should stand up, be a man of integrity and make this thing right.

I'm not usually this judgmental, but sin is sin. What could've been one of America's proudest moments is now . . . really scary.

I too am scared about what's happening. The hate-mongering is getting carried away. We've all heard the shouts at rallies. This entire thing may well end up costng lives. It's ugly - it's shameful and McCain is personally responsible for allowing any of it. Actually, "allowing" is too passive a word. He is condoning it AND encouraging it, given his approval of the robocalls.

In light of some very disturbing words and images that have been published recently in connection to the presidential campaign, I thought it would be good to read this poem, written some years ago by my mother: one small voice from New Orleans.

PEACE
Peace when you wake from your slumber
Peace as you dream through the night
Peace in your mornings and evenings
Peace when the sun’s at its height
Peace though the dark clouds may gather
Peace in the eye of a storm
Peace at the sight of a rainbow
Peace when the earth’s soft and warm
Peace in all your endeavors
Peace in your work and your play
Peace throughout your tomorrows
May this peace begin this day!

Please pass it on.

They don't care about their reputation as long as they win and Obama's numbers are slipping proving that this monstrous assault is hitting it's mark. Taking the high road looks noble but is it effective? I hope
so.

My family and I saw "Hacking Democracy" last year on HBO (if I remember correctly--the station that is). It is scarey stuff. Anybody who believes the Dems are trying to steal the election for Obama should really take a look at what the Republicans are capable of.

"Hacking Democracy" is about as scary as this country gets. It should be required viewing in all colleges and high schools. It is what the Obama campaign should air for its half-hour commercial. If this sort of thing happened in Europe, there would be tens of thousands of people in the streets. In the US, we just congratulate ourselves that the democratic process works and our government keeps plugging along. HA!
