Sunday Roundup

Posted: 02/07/09 11:55 PM ET

This week offered some tough calls. What was the scariest audio tape: Christian Bale's f-bomb-filled Terminator tirade or Dick Cheney's bone-chilling mutterings on the "high probability" of a coming nuclear 9/11 and preemptive finger-pointing? Who showed the worst parental judgment: 14-is-not-enough single mother Nadya Suleman or the father who thought it was a good idea to post video of his drugged up 7-year old on YouTube (paging child protective services)? And who is most in need of a racial sensitivity class: Miley Cyrus, Bishop Richard "What Holocaust?" Williamson, or Florida Republican Carol Carter, who sent around an email questioning how "2,000,000 blacks get into Washington, D.C. in 1 day in sub zero temps when 200,000 couldn't get out of New Orleans in 85 degree temps with four days notice"? Discuss.

If Dick Cheney is afraid to live in the United States he should move to France.

As I read the article, it was the first I heard about Carol Carter R. FL who compared the millions who attended the inaugural celebration of Obama departing D.C. to the citizens of my hometown New Orleans who were stranded in the wake of Katrina. Who are these people who have no sense of perspective, compassion, or social conscience?

It was so much like what one would hear from the likes of Rush that it leads me to conclude that they really should be led by him. Expose as many of the Bachmans, Carters, Palins, and Hannitys to the American public to the light of day! It can only speed up the demise of that divisive party once and for all. It will probably morph into the new Confederacy since it is pretty much limited to the south now anyway.

If we look at the roundup, it appears that the Republicans are just no good for our society, though at 15 Miley probably doesn't know if she's a rethug or not. About the stimulus? I don't need to read it, I say take out everything the R's wanted and let them filibuster. Dare them to show the American people whose side they are on.

Im sorry I must have some wax in my ears or something, did you just say you don't need to read the bill? You are a politicians wet dream. Just follow the herd, drink the kool-aid, sleeeeep.....
Baaaaa.

Re: email: One word - "Bush" explains it. Bush did little to nothing constructive to help the people of New Orleans leave and very few would have wanted to travel to Washington to see Bush. The only way that occurred was because of the incredible interest in seeing Obama inaugurated!

In the case of Cheney et al, I'd say there is probable cause to do utter and total surveill4nce him for years to come. We're not safe from Cheney and his lot yet. Hubris is not yet ded for these people, as exemplified by those in the congress and senate.

Cheney. What we need to do for Cheney is an "extraordinary rendition" where he is snatched off the street, flown across the Atlantic, and dropped off at the Hague. G. W. Bush would make a great unwilling traveling companion. The folks there would know what to do with them.
04:30 PM on 02/08/2009
And let's hear it for our "bi-partisan" Republican friends: McCain's drop into the rabbit hole on the Senate floor yesterday during his explanation of partisanship, Colburn's reduced need for speed, Collin's heralded as a moderate innovator. Pshaw! The Roman Catholic Church needs to start paying attention to what IS happening in the world, not just what the Pontiff says SHOULD BE happening in the world. Perhaps they'd do a better job of prevention and save themselves some HUGE PR nightmares. As for Carol Carter's constituents, I'm glad I live in the Pacific. Tell the Senate to put it to a vote NOW. Let the Repubs philibuster. Do not back away from this, Congress. Listen to America. We have had it.
04:45 PM on 02/08/2009
"Philibuster" is not a mispelling or typo. That's what they'll do if we give them the rope to do it with. Repuplicans will use the time to spout their numbers, set their picture boards on easels, and wax philosophic on Democratic fiscal irresponsibility, partisanship, and socialistic directions. Meanwhile, recent jobs data indicates 30,000 more Americans lost their jobs today. A third of them got foreclosure notices. Tens of millions have the thermostats turned down in the house, just enough gas for church today and work tomorrow, IF the starter holds until the end of the week when the new one comes in to the shop.

Does anyone really care about Christian Bale?

2008 election results D- 52.9% (69,456,897) R - 45.7% (59,934,814)
If 5% of the people like me who crossed over for the first time ever to vote for Obama refrained from leaving their republicans roots would the Democrats still be in power?
I voted for a leader to stand up and tell the credit-card-loving, mortgage-craving, debt-addicted consumers of America that helped create the meltdown to learn fiscal responsibility. I voted for a leader to implement clawbacks on ill gotten gains by realtors, mortgage brokers, CEOs, Sport stars etc. Instead we got a leader that caps pay after the fact and is promoting a welfare bill as a stimulus bill and an economic team that can’t wait to subsidize 3000 sq ft McMansions and bailout the cash-out refi boat buying middle class because they are victims. Just read the bill yourself. Don’t get me wrong!! I would also support increased spending for a social safety net bill but don’t insult me with “catastrophe” rhetoric and think I am too dumb to go read all 600+ pages myself and expect me to think this bill will create jobs. Democrats will lose everything if they don’t back off from Republican bashing. Stop making me regret voting for Obama with “We won” and give us some respect.

CHENEY IS FEAR-MONGERING AGAIN WITH WARNING OF A NUCLEAR 9/11 TERRORIST ATTACK ON AMERICA LIKE THE WOLF BOY WHO CRIED WOLF BUT THERE WAS NO WOLF

By Hermie Rotea

Apparently Dick Cheney is still suffering from fear, real or imagined. During his 8-year stint as vice president at the White House he and the nation's worst president George W. Bush thrived on fear of terrorist attack as their justification for preemptive strike and self-defense doctrine, which served as their great deception in invading and occupying Iraq and Afghanistan in their illegal, immoral and phony war on terror.

Now Cheney is afflicted by bone-chilling mutterings on the "high probability" of a coming nuclear 9/11 catastrophe and preemptive finger-pointing. Is this what forced retirement from public office has done to him? As one can recall, when he and Bush ran the White House, they ignored many early warnings of terrorist attacks by Osama bin Laden and his Al Qaeda suicide bombers provided to them by the CIA and 10 other nations, as not credible and impossible. America paid dearly with 3,000 lives and billions of dollars in losses for their criminal neglect and violation of their constitutional duty to protect the nation.

So now who is talking about 9/11? With his dismal record as vice president along with Bush, Cheney is like the tale of the shepherd boy who repeatedly cried wolf although there was no wolf. His credibility is ZERO.
04:30 PM on 02/08/2009
Cheney is invoking (calling for) an attack by his friend Osama bin-Laden. Simple as that.

He is sending it loud and clear.

I realize that the Florider (I live near Boston) email comment was beneath contempt, but I think I'll answer it anyway. Every summer, people all over the coastal southeast used to claim that hurricanes were nothing to worry about and they'd just stay put until it was over...and most of these people were white. (The craziest seemed to be the residents of Key West, Florider which is not much more than a sandbah...I hope somebody recued the cats there. ) One of the places one could turn to for a discussion BEFOREHAND was an episode of Bill Moyers' Jounal on PBS, discussing the problems with the levees, but not many New Orleansians(?) saw it. Now, if the Weather Channel says a hurricane is making a beeline for an American City, hordes of people move on out!

Regarding the levees on the lower Mississippi, there was a lot of scientific and political discussion about the dangers of flooding before it happened, much like there is discussion today about the dangers of global warming.

For example, years before Katrina, Scientific American magazine had a lead article detailing what would happen if a strong hurricane were to hit the New Orleans area - they forecasted a major disaster. Not too long after that, Congress passed billions of dollars for levee repair. Unfortuneately, Pres. Bush refused to spend the appropriated money. After the fact, it is easy to see that the $15 billions appropriated for repair before the hurricane are a pittance compared to the consequences of refusing to spend that money.

Personally, I feel that it is a shame that the scientific discussions that took place before Katrina were not acted upon, and that Bush was not taken to task for failing to act upon those warnings. (One could observe that he refused to heed the warnings of major hurricane damage to the New Orleans area, in the same way that he ignored the warnings about Al Qaeda.) Likewise, the scientific warnings regarding global warming have not yet been acted upon appropriately.

It appears to be a genuine waste of time to even listen to the rethugs anymore. All the thoughtfulness and politeness accorded to them is a sheer waste.
They are like snotty kids that know that if they act up, mom and dad will have to give them a Happy Meal, or some concession to shut them up. I say, put them in "Time Out" and put the count at 24 hrs for every stupid obstructionist trick they use. By now, they are sentenced to 50 years in time out and then...maybe, if they've learned their lesson, they can speak again.
What kind of progress can be made at the rate we need it NOW, if we keep catering to these selfish, ignorant incompetents?

Bone-chilling? Cheney? Not my bones. I just want to forget about him. Please help me by not quoting him, picturing him or mentioning him -- unless it's the news that he's being indicted.

Bishop What Holocaust? needs human sensitivity training. Holocaust deniers make me physically sick. I read that he refuses to go to an actual concentration camp to see for himself. Wouldn't want any actual proof messing up his "beliefs". I've visited Auschwitz and Birkenau and it was one of the most difficult experiences I've ever had. Unfortunately, even if Bishop Crazy Pants were to visit a camp, he'd say it was staged, because that's what he wants to believe, rational or not. Very Christian of him, hmmmm....

This disturbs you and makes you feel sick?

Imagine how A Americans feel when a whole country that had laws to keep the violence of slavery going says" I wasn't there, I'm not responsible, yet all other groups destroyed by some form of halocaust, got set right to build THEIR COMMUNITIES, while we still can't afford homes or start businesses, without the crooks jacking the price up two to three times on us.

Fair my derere.

I invested 487.00 dollars on food and clothes and it will be a long time before I spend more, unless a stimulus comes. Bills, transportation and health take everything else and I saved this money from my tax refunds of two years. It was supposed to go to the stock market, but they proved false. It was a five hundred dollar investment for green tech's wire demand that will be regridding OUR country. Still have another 1500 left to invest, but haven't seen the crooks locked up.

Maybe I need to check with other investment firms of the color persuasion, since they are on board with future energy plans for America. I've searched the old status quo places, and all I see is drunken greedy influence peddlers, that won't get my children's or my investment $$

Get rid of the crooks, Wall STreet knows who they are and are waiting to try and scam our Green companies.

NOT gonna happen Capn.

When REagan and Bush 1 ran up the deficit and Clinton cleared it up in six years, they didn't give the businesses all the breaks, but the people who would spend and fill the demand for products, they were lacking due to loss of employment.

If the corporate welfare hacks in DC don't get out the way of the people's money, there will be no demand and it will return to a renters heaven. People just won't put their money in their hands ever again. New honest people, or keep your banks.

WE the PEOPLE will ask OUR PRESIDENT, to nationalize one bank that was trustworthy of the people's savings and back OUR Stimulus, without the crooks ever touching a cent.

I still don't see the perp walkers of WAll STreet. Until then, keep your crooked bankers and inverstors like Madoff.

I have to tell you, it's not looking good for a certain sect of figure heads, that have run our banks and investment firms in the past.

NO JUSTICE ON WALL STREET, NO PIECE OF MY PIE FOR RETIREMENT OR INVESTMENT.

BUCK YOU GREEDY CROOKS, YOU ALL NEED JAIL!!

OH DID I MENTION, NOR MY GRANDCHILDRENS INSURANCE MONEY OR COLLEGE SAVINGS TO STOCK YOUR GREEDY COFFERS.
05:27 PM on 02/08/2009
At last someone suggests nationalizing the ailing banks, or the biggest bank. The govt
did that on a temporary basis during the savings and loan debacle and then returned the
trusts to the private sector. It worked then. Britain has shown that it will work now.
