What's Your Reaction?

I should sue John McCain. Three and a half years ago, writing about Net Neutrality, the attempt to guarantee the Internet stays free and open, I said that it was a slam-dunk issue being hampered by a lousy name -- one that evokes a tennis match in Switzerland or basketball players who don't choose sides. And I suggested some alternatives, including The Fast, Downloadable Porn Act and The Internet Freedom Act. Cut to last week, when McCain, the number one recipient of telecom campaign cash in Congress, introduced a bill that would effectively kill Net Neutrality. The name of his bill? The Internet Freedom Act! Paging George Orwell! War is Peace, Ignorance is Strength, and Freedom is... an Internet controlled by AT&T and Verizon. We can't let that happen. Support Net Neutrality. Let's start by giving it a better name.

Arriana - Big business, just like they have gouged the consumer with high cell costs and higher TV costs (remember when the airways were owned by the public? and watching TV was FREE), will try thier BEST to get absolute control of the internest any way they can . Currently there is an internations law being written up right under our noses that would essentially kill open free internet we have come to know, it't being disguised as copyright protection, but the ONLY people it protects is billion dollar industries and black mails the rest of us. Take a look, this is how it begins
" A leaked draft of the Internet chapter of the controversial Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) reveals that ISPs will be held liable for the infringements of their customers, unless they disconnect those accused."

The Freedom of Internet Access Act of course!

We need to be able to access the little guy's blog at the same rate of speed as people access big company websites because the whole point of the Internet is to give everyone a chance, not just people with a lot of money and those who own media companies.

Freedom of Internet Access Act!

Freedom of Internet Access Act!

Freedom of Internet Access Act!

...well, you get the idea...we just have to get the word OUT already -- and find someone to sponsor the bill! Are you listening, Al Franken?!?!?!?!? (Now that he's finally in office.) Come on, you know Wellstone would have done it....

The GOP seems to love the use of euphemisms. In his book "When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?," George Carlin says that we insulate ourselves from ugly, unattractive things that "need fixing" with fluffed-up, prettier, confusing words. The fake, truth-hiding words that people utilize to dumb down our country is appalling. We must not take things as they are. Ask questions, be slightly cynical to everything -- not just beliefs you disagree with and educated yourself. Until then, things like this so-called "freedom" act purposed by former-presidential hopeful John McCain will be taken as face value and thought of as good for us. And remember: Cash rules everyone around you.

Thanks for calling attention to this as it has to be one of the most important issues that all Americans should be concerned about.

Knowledge is power and if the knowledge of the American people is restricted, we're in for even more trouble than we've already got with biased and corporate owned media and journalists.

It is so frustrating that many Americans just hear the name of a proposed law and don't understand the bait and switch that is so often used. Too often, laws are named something that will sound good to most Americans and not get too much scrutiny or attention, and too often, those nice sounding laws end up doing the very opposite of what their name implies.

In addition to the knowledge the internet provides, our votes being counted is the only hope for real change. Here is another most critical issue Americans must stay on top of: http://www.commonblog.com/story/2009/9/17/131644/387
(we need to stick with the tried and true paper ballots that have worked for so long, get rid of ballots with chads, and most importantly, we must get rid of electronic voting!)

I knew it was a matter of time. The net allows us to have free speech and resurch the truth. They find this an obstacle to their continued corruption. We need to fight this one hard folks or we will be back to silent majority status again.........

To the Repubs, who like to put "Freedom" in front of lots of their propaganda, freedom means freedom to be used, manipulated and exploited by Big Money.
