Sunday Roundup

What's Your Reaction:

Tough to say who needs remedial PR training more, BP chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg, who this week referred to those affected by the Gulf catastrophe as "the small people" or Texas Rep. Joe Barton who used a high-profile hearing on the Hill to apologize to BP and accuse the White House of subjecting the company to "a shakedown." Svanberg quickly went into contrition mode, blaming his tone-deaf remark on a "slip in translation" (he's Swedish). Under pressure, Barton, who owns a natural gas well and has received nearly $1.5 million from oil and gas industry donors, apologized for his apology, saying: "If anything I've said this morning has been misconstrued... I want to apologize for that misconstruction." He should apologize for that sentence. Then, as penance, both men should translate their regret into reparations, contributing a big amount to "the small people" devastated by the disaster.

He speaks English well enough, and the concept that there are "small people" out there, is not particular to native English speakers......this was simply an insult with a Sweedish accent.

Baloney!! It was a simple error in translation from someone who is not thoroughly versed in American syntax. He probably speaks at least functionally in 3 or more languages and it belittles people like Arianna, Keith Olbermann et. al. to harp on it. Leave such grandstanding to the Limbaugh's and FAUX news talking heads. I am a fan of Arianna's and Olbermann's.

Based on which facts do you assume that this was "a simple error in translation"?

The people of the Gulf Coast do not appreciate the condescention of BP's Chairman, when he refers to them as "small people", which is not an example of "American Syntax".

"Baloney", that's Americam syntax.

By the way, I'm not "harping" on it, simply replying to Arianna's post with my own opinion, and risking insult, or support from my fellow HP readers......

And "Grandstanding", who's grandstanding here?

Barton and Bachmann misspoke when calling the 20 billion dollar oil spill victims escrow account a ‘slush fund,’...it is a "sludge fund"

Does anyone on this blog know who BP's largest owners (shareholders) are and why?

BP chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg, "the small people"
Give him a break: he was just referring to, commoner those who actually pay taxes.

Texas Rep. Joe Barton who apologized to BP and accused the White House of subjecting the company to "a shakedown"
We all know you do NOT bite the hand that feeds you.

I don't think anything in Rep. Barton's comments were misconstrued, taken out of context or reported on in an incomplete manner. He issued an unequivocal apology to BP. That's what he said. There is a public record.
But the parenthetic element to his comments were, "I'm a fairly stupid guy...and I'm not afraid of sharing my ignorance with the whole freaking world."

In the real world, an employee (poor man forgot he is an elected official for the "small people") , who so overtly put the interest of his handlers before his official duty would be fired. Actually, we need to get rid of all the bought politicians, agencies and departments. With so many "small people " out of work...and that includes the hundreds of thousands of middle aged experienced professionals who are ready, willing and able, yet face job discrimination , we can surely find replacements,

All this obsession with PR and optics is absolute hogwash - all it does is does is confirm that people would rather be l!ed to.

I totally agree that they should help fund a charitable trust as well as Obummer should donate all that nasty money given to him and his campaign. Money that was way and above what anyone else has received, even if you add years of contributions.
Yes its true. We got the best politicians that others bought and paid for, esp our (it's not my fault) President

Christopher, don't let the truth explode your GOBP head, compliments to Media Matters, truth will set you free from the Glenbeckistan camps.

In fact, Obama received no BP PAC money for 2008 campaign
Obama received no PAC money from BP during his presidential campaign. Contrary to the Times' claim that Obama "took in $77,000" from BP "executives and its political action committee," during "the 2008 election cycle," Obama received $71,051 in BP-linked contributions during his presidential campaign, and $6,000 in 2004, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. All of the BP-linked money Obama received for his 2008 campaign came from BP employees, not from BP's PAC or from the company itself. A spokesman for the Center for Responsive Politics confirmed that "the $71,051 that Obama received during the 2008 election cycle was entirely from BP employees." The CRP spokesman also stated that "Obama did not accept contributions from political action committees, so none of this money is from BP's PAC."

Donations from BP or its employees represent 0.01 percent of Obama's total fundraising. As Media Matters senior fellow Jamison Foser has noted, Obama has raised more than $799 million for his campaigns. The $77,051 he has received from BP's PAC and employees accounts for less than 0.01 percent of Obama's total campaign contributions.

I hear BP is going to contract out to FOX news for some "spin" lessons. That should take care of the PR nightmare they more than deserve.

Arianna, could you please run a story, as well as perhaps include instructions in the user profile area, on how to properly prepare avatar images before uploading them to user profiles? Quite a few users have distorted avatars, either compressed vertically or horizontally, without perhaps understanding the reason why or how to fix the problem.

The displayed avatar images are perfectly square, and if the uploaded images from users are not square they will be compressed either horizontally or vertically as necessary to make them square, with the attendant distortion this produces. To avoid this, make sure that the images are properly trimmed/cropped to be square before uploading them. Users may need to use an image editing program to do this, but if they're technically savvy enough to be posting here, then presumably they should also be savvy enough to know how to do this.

While you're at it, perhaps you could instruct your staff to check the aspect ratio of the images on the side bar. Most of them are similarly distorted.

Thank you.

BP and Barton have done all in their power to blacken BP's reputation and destroy their Texas Republican hirelings. Too bad we have so many moronic white dittoheads who get their daily spin from Fox-Rush-Tea Party (run by Dick Armey of, where else?, TEXAS)-Palin. These spinners seem to have to power to convince their stupid fans that black is white and down is up. Intelligent people laugh at BP and Barton, but we've always got to recall how many voters are moronic dittoheads these days, for whom the "facts" don't exist until Fox-Rush and friends tell the dolts what the "facts" are.

You've hit the nail on the head, because of most of AM is dominated by right-wing radio the significance of the Barton apology will be minimized or ignore. As a result this significant development will be lost to the masses. We really do need some version of the fairness doctrine instituted.

Cleaning up is just the bare minimum of action/penalty BP/MMS is to perform.

That is like rear-ending you, and only repairing the damage to the car, and cleaning up the pieces that fell on the road.

They need to reimburse each person effected by this for pain and suffering as well. I personally feel emotional distress, and pain as a result of what BP did to our environment, and to our kids future. I continually live in anguish over this, and know as a result of the corruption in Washington, DC, this problem is not going to be effectively resolved - hence, the Legislators are culpable for my pain and suffering due to their continued support, and lack of oversight of these corporations -

Their continued alliance with corporations, constructively evidenced by their actions/or inaction (failure to oversee, regulate, or permit the corporations actions - (ie, drilling in our country's waters in a wreckless manner), this alliance supports and therefore contributes to my distress, and emotional anquish.

Thus, a massive class action lawsuit should be orchestrated in order to seek remedies to this continual distress imposed upon us by both the corporations / and the appropriate US regulatory entities.

This week was an excellent reminder that corporations, regardless of name or country owe one allegiance only and that is "for profit"above all else. Another, not so surprising, fact is that they also own much of our legislatures and government at large.

Thanks Arianna.

What is this hangup about people taking a time out?

The term "petits peuples" is found historically in French literature. Perhaps Europeans can comment on the degree to which references to "little people" are commonly used in European culture.

[slapping forehead] And all this time, I thought that Svanberg was talking about leprechauns ... or possibly Lilliputians.
