Sunday Roundup

What's Your Reaction:

A rolling stone gathers no moss, and this week a loose-tongued General got steamrolled by a paper one. President Obama did the right thing in canning McChrystal. But his appointment of David Petraeus bodes very badly for the July 2011 withdrawal start date. Last week, Petraeus hinted as much, telling Congress he would recommend delaying the withdrawal if conditions in Afghanistan didn't improve (and is there anyone left who thinks they will?). Petraeus Ex Machina got the president's backing: "We didn't say we'd be switching off the lights and closing the door behind us," the commander-in-chief told the nation. Something tells me that Obama - McChrystal + Petraeus = upping the ante in Afghanistan. We need to change the equation.

I will believe it when I see it! Araina your point is well taken.

Off topic.

Great radio show! It's sad to hear the lack of common sense from Mary. She just sticks to them talking points and will try her best to back them up no matter what. I find it an incredible feat to stay as calm as you do when trying to have a discussion with these people. I may not agree 100% on everything here on Huff, but it just wouldn't be any fun if that was the case right? Keep up the great work and never change. :)

I hate to keep repeating but, no one in Afghanistan wants this war to end. Not Karzai, not the war lords, not insurgents. As long as troops are there, the money from Americans is flowing in like Niagara Falls. Corruption so blatant even Karzai's brother is dealing in heroin.
I am certain that those in Afghanistan getting rich from this war will not allow peace, even if it means they have to share some of the spoils with Taliban and others to set off the occasional car bomb or roadside bomb.
We are being duped by these "leaders" and they are laughing all the way to the bank.
The sooner we can execute a departure the better. There is some preservation that has to happen at the sometime. Give Obama a chance, to get this done the right way.

pull our men & women out of there and put them on our bodies and keep the ILLEGALS the hell out of the country.

Ya know, I thought Arianna's point about blame, distrust and party blindness on the Sunday politipundit marathon sounded so reasonable, then she turns around and tries to implicate bringing in Petraeus is a tacit implication of never-ending war and it makes me wonder whether she really believes it. I'm sure more partisan infighting and amping up the distrust factor will end the war. Only took, oh, about 10 years and 50,000 troops for that strategy to work to end Vietnam.

The way Obama has been keeping his promises, I tend to side with Arriana, I will believe it when I see it.

Show me the troop withdrawl Barrack, and I don't mean from Iraq to Afghanistan or Iran. I mean back to the USA, all of em, and no more Halliburton, KBR, Blackwater contracts either to replace the troops, we'll save a fortune.

We have been there 10 years. If another year is not enough, it is time to pull out.

McCrystal could see the inevitable as well as the rest of us: the Afghan "war" is not winnable. His choices were 1. Stay on and be forever associated with losing the "war", 2. Figure out a good excuse to resign and let another patsy get the bad reputation, or 3. Get fired in such a way as to make Obama look like Jimmy Carter and remain a hero to the war fans on the right. He chose the third option and went out with his reputation within the right wing intact. They loved his snarky comments about Obama and his team. Comments by the media and Congress are irrelevant. Most of them are half-wits and their comment will be forgotten in a few days.

So McCrystal will move on to a cushy position with a defense industry company or a right wing "non-profit", completely escaping the Vietnam noose. We are left with wondering if we have a repeat of the Johnson or the Carter presidency, neither very attractive in this respect.

Blanche: "Deliberate cruelty is unforgivable, and the one thing of which I have never, ever been guilty of." So when I think about it, I must wonder, "Did I get stuck on the Astral Plane in the late 1860s or 1970s, and or could I have entered "The Twilight Zone", or even worse, this is really a "Parallel Universe" where , on one side there are "the People" , and on the other are "the 'Elected Representatives of the People' ".
Now this would be OK, since politicians are generally the type of people who should be in jail for fraud or something of that nature.
The problem is, we, the people, and generally , right thinking soldiers, and especially those who have seen the video of the heroic helicopter riding troops shooting up civilians on the street, then shooting up the van, and the children inside it when they came to rescue the wounded.
The point being, how can it be that these politicians are totally ignoring the desire of the people to get
the US out of the pit of Afghanistan?
Are we dialing the wrong number?
Are the politicians just not picking up the phone?
Have I lost my marbles again?
Should I just start yelling "Stella...Stella..." and hope she turns up.

@ mars.
You are most generous with your kind comment. I am really only trying to replace Anthony Blanche as the "World's Most Charming Man" therefore increasing my chances of inducing a rich old bat (preferably near death ,or recently deceased) to be my patron. Then I will be able to live the sordid life which I have always dreamed of, and focus on my artistic pursuits. Getting a tan not being one of them as I just had to get a piece of suspect eternal scab removed from my arm.

"... his appointment of David Petraeus bodes very badly for the July 2011 withdrawal start date. Last week, Petraeus hinted as much, telling Congress he would recommend delaying the withdrawal if conditions in Afghanistan didn't improve... "

Petraeus came 'recommend' anything he wants to. He, at least, knows who's boss!

Yes he does, the Military Industrial complex, and Wall Street, they are also Obama's bosses, and they have their people in the President's cabinet. Just as Obama and Dodd pressed for a watered down the financial reform bill for Wall Street and a stimulus, That didn't help the poor and elderly much (whatever happened for that $200 check for senior citizens depending on social security and no cost of living increase for seniors last year?), I bet you he lengthens the Afghanastan war for the military industrial complex.

Just you wait!

Check out what Senator Mike Gravel said about Obama and his generals...Patraeus got "demoted"...no longer has the edge for Republican Presidential nominee...

He can't run in 2012 cuz' he'll be too busy with this. That being said, I don't think he really wants to run anyways.

You could start with yourself for allowing your government to get so far out of control. Sooner or later you're going to have to deal with that reality.

Well, short of mass rebellion and demonstrations, how are We The People supposed to get our voices heard by this corporatist government? It's coming to a head... Obama is bankrupting us through wars, bailouts, joblessness, and now a disaster of untold magnitude on our country and the economy. No, he didn't create it (well he did sort of... thru the criminal neglegence of the MMS on HIS watch), but add the neverending war and tax dollars to fund such and we're getting a rather volatile mix on Obama's watch. This isn't looking good at all, not from where I sit.
10:29 PM on 06/27/2010
The answer, according to the media, is everyone. The question is to what end.
07:08 PM on 06/27/2010
I am surprised by Arianna's post. McCrystal's unplanned removal from leading this war required a new appointment which would be as seamless as possible and show the troops and the country that the military brass was honored to serve at the President’s pleasure. The appointment of David Petraeus showed that Obama's military support was not weakened and calmed the field by appointing the most qualified and seasoned general into the theater. Trying to suggest that this appointment is a shift in Afghan strategy is really reading too much into it.
I would not be surprised if this appointment is temporary however.

I hope you are right about 'temporary' --- there are how many Taliban in Afgahnistan? Fewer than 100... what the hell are we doing wasting precious lives and money... Money that is desperately needed in the US... Let the Afghans live in the 16C ... I don't care. Bring our troops home and use the money for Americans.

Although I agree with Arianna; I think it would be chiken sh-- to leave the Netherlands, Japan, England and others in Afghanistan holding the bag.
