Blood libels aside, this week was dominated by talk of ratcheting down the tone of our political discourse and upping the civility. But the president went further, asking us to "use this occasion to expand our moral imaginations" and "sharpen our instincts for empathy." And he went further still and defined the challenge ahead: "to constantly widen the circle of our concern so that we bequeath the American Dream to future generations." The State of the Union is a great opportunity to put flesh and blood on this challenge. The president needs to address both of the ways his administration proposes to "widen the circle of our concern," and the ways citizens can sharpen their instincts for empathy by reaching out to those in need -- rebuilding lives and communities. Without this combined effort, bequeathing the American Dream to future generations will remain just an eloquent rhetorical flourish.

"The Immortal Value of Wisdom"

Wikipedia defines Spirituality as, “the ultimate or immaterial reality; as an inner path enabling a person to discover the essence of being; or the deepest values and meanings by which people live.” This essay is about immortal value.

Economy strikes a balance between give and take. In the Do Good Gauge journey, I'm not ready to become a monetary taker. If acquiring the collective wisdom of others is considered taking, I'm greedy. My father died when I was nineteen and mother when I was twenty five. In my middle age I judge my family network as great, though miss the advice and wisdom society rarely provides beyond a parent. This may be the reason for a different perspective of economics.

"....bequeathing the American Dream to future generations will remain just an eloquent rhetorical flourish." Evidently, the success of countless previous generations of Americans and immigrants without the insinuation of progressive measures must have been mirage. I'd like to remind this mindless writer that American has always been most generous, both to those who are less fortunate and to those willing to work for the dream.

maybe, but lets see how generous we are if you take away the tax write off often attributed to such giving. Why giving is a tax haven is beyond me, in essence it is a tax shelter.
11:30 PM on 01/16/2011
I give as much as I can afford but it isn't enough for a tax write-off, so I guess you must be speaking for others.

I would like to see the president demonstrate his commitment towards "widen(ing) the circle of our concern so that we bequeath the American Dream to future generations" - by pursuing an active role of leadership in leading the nation towards policies and legislative efforts that serve the lofty purpose he spoke of creating the American dream for future generations.

With increased foreclosures and a failure of "helping Americans save their homes", the rhetoric falls short in fulfilling the beautiful images that President Obama creates in speech.
With structural inequities in the health care system, Americans continue to struggle with the costs of prescription drugs, access to affordable care, and quality coverage as he and others enjoy in Washington.
With the jobless rate at almost 10% and no changes regarding the debt/ and economic relations with China, there is little hope for job growth and a fulfillment of the American dream.
All across the nation, communities are reeling from the fraud that resulted in economic hardship, losses and threats of local governments failing, as a consequence of repeated acts by elected officials that betray the public's trust, while benefiting elected officials through disgraceful deals forged through conflicts that betray the public's interests.

We need ethics in government, and honest, trustworthy elected officials capable and worthy of honoring the public's trust. The American people want actions dedicated towards widening " the circle of our concern..to bequeath the American Dream to future generations".

It is very difficult to sit through a lecture by Barrack Obama on the subject of civil discourse. It evokes the same gag reaction as when he discusses his dedication to fiscal responsibility.
For him to be believable on either subject would require total
amnesia of his actions the last two years. Luckily for him, the
MSM has no problem doing just that. It must be remembered that there are substantive and valid reasons for the strong opposition to his agenda. This country has prospered due to fundamental beliefs in freedom, innovation, self-determination, personal responsibility, and the rule of law. His emphasis on a nanny state, affirmative action, wealth transfer, equal results, amnesty, excessive union power and unelected bureaucrats
having unprecedented controls over private industry and personal health care makes a mockery of what has always been "America". In countries with the massive social benefits Obama favors, EVERYONE pays about 20% of income, high VATs, and income taxes. In the U.S. where barely half pay any income tax, the numbers will never add up.

Well, you certainly have a point when you talk about amnesty and wealth transfers...but America has been going down the drain since Reagan. Bush, Reagan, Obama, Clinton all see the world the same way, through the eyes of corporations. Bush did the perscription drug program, the largest growth in government "nanny state" since social security. Our government is broken and neither party are trustworthy.

The only "wealth transfer" I have seen in the last 30 years is a transfer to the top. They control an even larger amount of this countries wealth than 30 years ago. In the meantime we have lost millions of jobs to outsourcing, our middle class gets smaller and smaller as many slide to poverty. Somehow, I don't think that this is what the founding fathers envisioned when they wrote the Constitution. I don't think that those who fought and died to create this country did so to be ruled by corporations.

I can only speak for myself, but if the actions had been done in reverse, I would have taken the same message from it that I did in the case of Mr. Fuller. Though I would have found them a little more tasteless (as he had just recently been shot). Simply, the ease at which one could get a firearm and shoot others.

Considering all the watered down compromises we were given embellished with Oprah feel good talking points and the fact Wall Street has flourished after causing undue and prolonged hardships for millions of honest hardworking Americans, I would say the Democrats were treated rather generously by their minions.

I don't know if "lucky" was the right word, I mean no public option but mandated coverage, no crack down on banking, no stopping the use of drones to kill un-tried suspects (not to mention the callateral damage).

"[T]o widen the circle of our concern," we need first be concerned. The American political theater is comedy for haves and drama for have-nots. We had better unravel the bigotry of our very own ethical dilemma before we plan care for others.

Empathy is what is missing in our elite class. They are so privileged that they do not comprehend the dire straights in which the majority of US citizens now find themselves. We must get beyond the high school civics propaganda. As long as the US continues with the myth of its superiority, we shall be doomed to repeat the fate of empires past. The British remain intact today because they decided that the survival of their culture was more important than world domination and, they understood that survival depended on INTERNAL STRENGTH PROVIDED BY PROGRESSIVE REFORMS. I can see no US leaders on the horizon who demonstrate the depth of knowledge, intellect and courage that the British demonstrated in their crucial stage of social evolution.

You will note that, as your comments suggests, the Brits have done much more to crack down on corporate and banking malfeasance than did the US. In fact what the US did could be hardly construed as anything but a wink and a nod, while England is dealing with the real problem of balancing their budget.

You'll note that there aren't any lobbyists opposed to a single syllable issuing from the teeth and gums of our beloved President. Barack Obama will widen the circle of his own concern right up until the moment that any influential lobbyists say "that's it--no more." Then his concern will abruptly stop.

You don't exactly hear him calling out for gun control legislation, for example. Oh, no. That would require leadership. That would require courage. Fox News wouldn't like that. Neither would the gun lobby.

He can't resist the chance to play the big shot leader, as long as there isn't any lobbying going on. If no lobbyists are opposed, he'll step right up to that bully pulpit and intone magnificently. But when it comes to passing any actual legislation to "preserve the American dream", he'll cower down and start talking half-truths and manipulations.

If you haven't figured this out about Barack Obama, you haven't been paying attention.

If you haven't figured out that he has passed more helpful legislation in this country in two years, than what has gone through in the last 10 before his election, then you haven't figured out Barack Obama. Or the real world he lives in.
Which is the same real world as you and I live in. And that Christina Taylor Green lived in.
I was once a nine year old in Tucson Arizona. I got to grow up.
He wasn't playing any "big shot leader" when he went to Tucson.
The memorial service was not the place or time to talk about gun control. And he didn't. He delivered a eulogy. Period.
If you weren't moved in the least, then I pity you.
