8 Quick Thoughts on Brazil vs. Honduras at the Olympics

Posted: 08/05/2012 12:05 pm

In the wake of Brazil's 3-2 victory against Honduras in the quarterfinals of the Olympics, I have a few quick thoughts:

1. Brazil has now scored three goals in each of four consecutive Olympics games with scorelines as follows: Brazil 3 - Honduras 2; Brazil 3 - New Zealand 0; Brazil 3 - Belarus 1; Brazil 3 - Egypt 2. With 12 goals scored so far, Brazil has scored almost twice as much as the next highest scoring team, Mexico, which has seven goals to date. Semifinalists Japan and South Korea have scored five and three goals respectively.

2. Today's match marked the arrival of Leandro Damiao in a big way. Damiao scored two crucial goals and won the penalty that Neymar converted to make it to 2-2. The Internacional hit man has now scored four goals in the tournament thus far and established himself as the man Brazil will look to in the box. He can play with his back to goal and has great balance and composure in the penalty area.

3. Brazil are playing very loose at the back, and that's clearly part of the philosophy without being a specific objective. The theory is, you score three goals, we'll score four. Mano Menezes isn't too worried by the goals conceded as long as Neymar and company can find the net on more occasions than those on which goals were conceded.

4. Neymar can go one on one against virtually any defender, meaning he can dribble his way into the box and either score, assist or draw a penalty. Watch for the rapid acceleration down the left flank as he cuts inside, with the ball pinballing between the right and left foot as he leaves defenders for dead.

5. Brazil is starting to earn a reputation for being able to come from behind. Historically, Germany is the most famous example of a national soccer team legendary for their ability to win given one or two goal deficits. Under Mano Menezes, Brazil came back against Belarus and Honduras, and has recently done so against Mexico as well.

6. Honduras played today with pace, passion and style. Honduras deserves a lot of credit for their spirited overall play and Roger Espinoza's goal and performance.

7. As in the game against Spain, Honduras delivered a highly physical performance. This kind of tactic almost paid off against Brazil, but it ultimately backfired in the form of the two red cards earned by Wilmer Crisanto and Roger Espinoza, respectively.

8. Brazil now play South Korea in the semifinals at Old Trafford, in a match where they will be challenged by South Korea's legendary physical fitness and their tactical discipline. Neymar and Oscar will need to step up and take control of the match for Brazil as South Korea will press relentlessly for 90 minutes.

The semifinal matchups are Mexico versus Japan and Brazil versus South Korea. The Asian teams have clearly come a long way in the last 10 years and Japan and South Korea should be feared by their Latin counterparts.

Honduras got robbed plain and simple even worse were the terrible calls being made by the ref for both teams i mean come on half of the brazilian team was diving and that first goal by Damiao was more like a foul but wasn't called. Hell Chino grazed the cleats of one of the Brazilians and he gets sent off??? They need to evaluate these refs asap

Is the writer of this column supposed to know English grammar? I'm from Brazil and English is my second language but I'm pretty sure "Brazil are" is wrong.

Consider changing your headline to "My thoughts on Brazil's performance against Honduras". And yes, Honduras was robbed. Romulo should have been giving a red. It looks like the only way that Brazil got past this one was because of the help the famous and controversial Byrch gave them.

The Honduran national team was robbed. Not only did they manage to justly earn the two goals scored, tactically they outplayed a talented Brazilian team. It's a shame really that the smaller teams get the worst end of the ref since everybody drools over Brazil. The two players were unjustly sent off but if anyone at HP had a clue about soccer they would recognize the glamour of Brazil is overrated, virtually non-existent without the help of their third player, the ref.

Any recap of the Brazil-Honduras match that doesn't mention Brazil's embarrassing display of diving and whining is failure. Neymar was particularly offensive in that respect yesterday. They have the talent to play the most beautiful football in the world. It's a shame when they refuse to do it. It's an even bigger shame when the refs buy their antics.

Neymar is (justly) known for his beautiful football and touch of genius. He's also (justly) known for diving way too much for his own good, which is something that I always find highly irritating, no matter how enjoying I find watching him play otherwise

However, if you take a good look at the match without preconceptions, you'll realise that, unless the tv images were misleading, he did not dive per se in this game (I mean by diving when a player throws himself to the ground even though there was no foul or worse, when there's no contact at all): he did try to make the most out of the fouls committed against him, but if you hate him for that, then you must hate about 90% of professional footballers as they almost all do that (believe me, Neymar has got NOTHING on someone like Davor Suker who was a master diver on top of being one of the best attackers of his era)

If you want to criticize the Brazilians, you'd be much better served by underlining how poorly they played the 15-20 minutes following the first goal by Honduras, when all the glitz and glam evaporated along with their ability to string two passes together - they were very lucky to get out of it this time around, but if they do the same against South Korea, they may well be in for a nasty surprise

Perhaps that is why the author used the phrase 'recently' rather than 'most recently'.
