Fighting the GOP Mobs: Progressives, Labor Ramp Up Grassroots Response

What's Your Reaction:

With lobbyist-backed GOP mobs working to shut down town hall meetings on health reform with members of Congress, labor and progressive groups are fighting back on several fronts. The orchestrated mob scenes have already led to reported death threats against at least one congressman and new outbreaks of violence.

One result of all this is that the voices of most Americans, who, polls show, favor a public health option, aren't being heard. In some ways, progressives have become the new "Silent Majority" in the health care debate, as I explore in a piece at the new labor-related blog of In These Times.

Yet in Tampa last evening, the media attention was focused on angry protesters who couldn't get into a meeting room to hear Rep. Kathy Castor, and began banging on walls and screaming "Tyranny!" As Think Progress headlined the incident: " Inspired By Glenn Beck, Protesters Overwhelm Town Hall Meeting With 'Cat Calls' And 'Banging On Windows'."

Progressives are facing well-coordinated organizing and propaganda efforts by corporate front groups spurring such protests, abetted by conservative and even mainstream media outlets (via Media Matters for America):

While progressives and unions have generated thousands of phone calls to Congress and door-to-door visits in support of health care reform over the last year, they're now sharply ramping up their efforts to increase turnout at the town hall meetings. The AFL-CIO, for instance, made public Thursday its strategy memo to state and local federations emphasizing having a major presence at those town halls, focusing on 50 high-priority swing districts.

But it's also a major player in the labor movement that is now poised, on its own and with such coalitions as Health Care for America Now, to unleash the most effective organizing infrastructure available to progressives -- a true counter-weight to corporate-funded "astro-turf" campaigns.

The question, of course, facing progressives and Democrats is whether the stepped-up response launched this week will be enough to overcome right-wing smears and mobs. Union strategists believe it will be -- and that the GOP's bully-boy, nutjob tactics will backfire, already a theme in Democratic ads. In upcoming ads and organizing, one union activist says, "We're going to be focusing on the health insurance companies, and how they're for keeping the status quo and thwarting reform; we'll be pinpointing this mob outrage for what it is, and drawing the link between it and the corporate mobilized manufactured events -- while 73% of the American public wants a public option."

One of the more hopeful signs for reformers is that President Obama's powerful organizing operation, Organizing for America, now run by the DNC, is adding to its phone banking and canvassing a new call to show up at town hall meetings. As the Washington Post's "Plumline" blog reported:

For the first time, Obama's formidable political operation, Organizing for America, is calling on supporters to go to town meetings and show support for Congressional Democrats, as a way of countering the Tea Party brigade's efforts to lay siege to such gatherings...
And early this week, for instance, the AFL-CIO hosted a "webinar" training and organizing session with over 200 leaders from the organization's four regions, opening with a short briefing by HHS Secretary Kathleen Sibelius on health care; organizers then turned to outlining the strategy in part of showing up in force at these town hall meetings.

AFL-CIO's lead health care advocate, Gerald Shea, observes, "When our people are organized, you're going to have a strong turnout and a strong visible presence. If there is a a disruption, we'll call for order and say, 'Many of us came here to to ask questions, not to harangue.'"

Still, Shea also says that they didn't plan on organizing large-scale turnouts at the town halls until this past Monday, because they were focusing on lobbying Congress through last Friday. News about the GOP anti-reform mob scenes broke over the weekend. He notes that they expected "significant" right-wing activity at the town halls, but Shea says union activists were surprised by the "intensity" at these events. But the push-back has begun.

On Thursday, AFL-CIO Secretary Treasurer Richard Trumka added a scathing critique of these "tea bagger"-style protests progressives and Democrats are challenging:

Major health care reform is closer than ever to passage and it is no secret that special interests want to weaken or block it...Mob rule is not democracy. People have a democratic right to express themselves and our elected leaders have a right to hear from their constituents -- not organized thugs whose sole purpose is to shut down the conversation and attempt to scare our leaders into inaction.

An early sign of the union movement's challenge to mob rule was already shown at an event Wednesday in Indiana featuring President Obama. As the AFL-CIO Now blog noted:

At most of these town halls, the large majority want real discussion about health care reform. And union and health care advocates are helping ensure that happens.

For example, yesterday in Indiana, President Obama was scheduled to deliver a talk on the economy, green jobs and health care at a Wakarusa RV plant. Union and health care activists went to work, knowing protesters were set to be bused in to line the streets by the plant and grab headlines. Union members and our allies called, sent e-mail messages and texted local unions and activists with the message "It's time to fight back for health care reform." Todd Anderson, AFL-CIO Midwest regional director, reports as many as 1,000 union members showed up, outnumbering the teabaggers by 10 to one.

Our allies at Health Care for America Now! have outlined a simple strategy activists can follow to make sure health care events set for the congressional recess are not hijacked by screaming teabaggers. It includes building turnout, making sure folks know what tactics to expect from the protesters, making contact with the media and more tips.

Richard Kirsch, the National Campaign Director of HCAN, declared:

We can't just wait for the public to recognize the reality behind this nutty minority. There are two prizes in the battle at hand -- the national press narrative and Congress' support. We have to win the press war by making it clear that shouts of "socialized medicine" and "government health care" are from a mob on the fringe of American politics. And we need to be sure that wavering Democrats in Congress see that there is strong popular support for health care reform.

The organization's strategy guide, targeted to activist groups, offered several key tactics to countering the anti-reform mobs, including:

3. Bring more people than the other side has. Their side will be smaller but noisier. You must bring enough people to drown them out and to cover all our bases so as to marginalize their disruptive tactics. You don't want to get into a screaming match, but it must be obvious to everyone -- including press -- that you represent the majority.

4. Arrive earlier than the other side does. We need to stack our folks in the front to create a wall around the Member, and we need to stake out the best spots for visibility and signs. Reconnaissance on the venue and an understanding of the staging will be important here. Make sure you do your homework so you can position your folks most effectively.

5. Be more visible than the other side. Bring more signs and leaflets, and whenever possible, post your signs all over the place so that you visually out-perform the other side. Make sure you have people holding signs in every place where a TV camera is likely to be and that next to every right wing sign, there's one of your signs with your message...

The Campaign for America's Future and People for the American Way are also organizing average citizens to participate.

The Campaign for America's Future progressive battle plan underscores what's at stake:

Don't Let Special Interests Use Town Halls To Block Change

The battle for health care reform has moved to town halls during the August congressional recess. But the wild mobs disrupting events, intimidating lawmakers, and shouting down reform are not just expressing their views, they are doing the dirty work for corporate interests that want to cut the heart out of the Obama health plan.

We absolutely cannot let the far right fringe do the bidding of the insurance and drug lobbies and hijack the debate. We need to show up, big.

Take back the town hall! Make our voices heard for real health care reform.

Now the question is whether the majority that favors genuine health care reform will turn out in large enough numbers to take back the health care debate that's been hijacked by extremists and corporate interests?

The truth: there is no magic number of citizen voters that can muster the momentum necessary to fight Big Pharma, Big Insurance, and Big Ignorance. The Bigs in this country can only be defeated by other Bigs. Yes, we can probably handle Big Ignorance, which is what your post is about on the town meeting level, and I'm all for that. But it isn't going to pass a bill, anymore than the wingnut opposition we're seeing now would halt a bill that Bigs really wanted.

Where are our Bigs? We finally got to the point, or so I thought, that some CEOs of some corporations realized that their paying through the nose for health insurance for their workers was costing them in profits, especially in competition with companies from countries with public health care. As for labor, well, this is one of the dirty little secrets of the current system: labor wanted health care as a bargaining chip, something they could win at the table for their workers. So long as a majority of American workers were unionized, this wasn't the worst system in the world.

We have to convince--God help us, but this is true--some other powerful special interests that they will benefit from change. Then we have half a chance at a real reform and not just something he can call reform. We had enough of that with Bush Jr.

The problem of dealing with irrational people who are motivated by fear, bigotry and hatred is that they are already delusional. Insidious propaganda is being fed to well meaning people from many sources. The only response you will get is projection. They will tell you that you are doing all the things you accuse them of doing. Many will actually believe their projection!

You can see that sense of fear and desperation in many of the speakers and demonstrators at these events. I can't say that they are not sincere. I believe that they are brainwashed by the media they consume. If you listened to right wing radio, Fox news, Drudge Report and "freeper" blogs, you would be brainwashed too.

I don't blame these folks for their irrational beliefs any more than I blame the Muslim ideologues who spend their time listening to anti-U.S. and Israeli propaganda. It is a human condition that can be countered and fixed by removing the people from their sheltered brainwashing and slowly fed facts. It will take time but ask any professional cult de-programmer, you first have to get the subject off the insidious propaganda first.

All I want is straight information from somewhere. I don't want to take sides. Anything I hear from the wingnut right I take as lies because they are chanting fear based diatribe. Oh they will kill grandma and let my Down's syndrome baby die! I don't believe that crap for one second. Grandma and the retarded children already are being taken care of by Medicaid. I really wish we could have a civilized debate over this. As it stands the only information out there is sensational. The ignorant are falling in line behind this bullshit. The voices of the crazies are drowing out the voices of reason and clear thinking. Others accross the world must be laughing their asses off at us.

I say let these wingnuts get as loud and as visible as they want. They will make easy targets when the war breaks out that they are starting. They should watch what they wish for.

I am so sick of the hypocrisy, and this article is rife with it! Many of the Democrats' town halls on health care are SPONSORED by special interest groups, including the SEIU and AFL-CIO. Are you calling those "grassroots" events? How about Moveon.org, The Center for American Progress, Democracy Alliance, HCFAN, and the like, all supporters of liberal agendas? They've been organizing for health care reform all year. Let's not forget Organizing for America, the political arm of the Democratic party and Obama's personal minions. We have spent years watching groups like PETA, EARTHFIRST and Code Pink disrupt and destroy in the name of their causes for decades, yet I have yet to hear liberals voice any opposition to that. Your fearless leader, Obama, is KING of organizing. Does "Argue with your neighbors, get in their face!" ring a bell? Yep, that would be a quote from Obama. How about "If they hit us, we'll punch them back twice as hard." That was from a White House adviser on Friday. How about Sebelius calling the SEIU to send in their goons to the town hall meeting? Friday night a conservative black man was beaten badly enough by one of them that he was sent to the hospital. I dare you to provide proof of ONE conservative being paid to go to a town hall meeting. Show me the buses that are supposed to be hauling in this "faux" protesters around. You CAN'T because it's NOT HAPPENING.

Hypocracy? How many of these groups you cite are taking money out of your pocket and not giving you a darn thing back? So you like the insurance protection racket being run on you - huh? You like being discriminated against because you're sick? You love inflated and exploitative drug prices? You love being 33rd in the world while insurance execs take in billions on your misery. You love working your behind off your whole life only to be bankrupt due to the Insurance Industries hypocrisy? Everybody is not having a town hall and just because it's not happening in your town doesn't mean it is not happening. I guess your next theory is that "It's those liberals holding up those nasty, racists signs just to get everybody all upset." Bull. The Insurance Industry is counting on you, you ignorance and your bigotry. And as far as this brother (YEAH I'm Black) supposedly got beat up - you weren't there (I assume) so you don't know what happened. I hope he had health covervage. If not - we both paid for him to go to the emergency room. Believe what you want, but that doesn't change the issue that people in this country deserve better than what hey are getting - that if change doesn't come and costs keep spiraling out of control you and I are headed for financial doom.

And so is the country. Health care will 1) either bankrupt the country or 2) will become so expensive none of us can afford it.

But, you see, they don't care. It's all about THEM - the country, of which they claim to care so much about while they wrap themselves in the flag and scream about their "freedoms" and "liberty" aren't the issue, only the excuse.

If it would doom the country and the rest of us, I'd be happy to tell them they have the "freedom" to file bankruptcy when they can't pay those health care bills and the "liberty" to pay as much as they want.

That said, they truly don't have any argument These bills are so skewed to the insurance industry already that they are not competitive and will put higher charges on the consumers. And who will be getting all these premiums - the insurance companies!

The only good things about these bills in the change that will not allow cancellations or denial for pre-existing conditions and getting insurance coverage for 47 million.

Beyond that, it's a gift to the insurance industry.

The difference is, they let both sides be heard and do not engage in disturbing the peace and hooliganism. Sure everyone has "special" interests, but don't confuse "freedom of speech" with disorderly conduct and preventing elected officials from communicating with their true constituents.

Though these "astro-turf" protests are allegedly engineered by a GOP-Insurance cabal, the missionaries recruited to ram the anti-health reform message down everyone's ears are tripping over their tongues. and wearing out their welcome as in Tampa. Sure they can inveigh against whatever ails THEM but what ails the average American is the lack of reform to a health care system long overdue for renovation. That said, I protest any legislation that excludes the single payer option: without it the bill would not deliver us from the evil of the high-handed insurers exacting higher premiums for higher deductibles, summarily default on payments via rescission and exclude coverage for those with pre-existings. The regional patchwork of co-opts, in lieu of single payer, currently gaining favor is not in our best interests. I don't believe there should be a time line on getting the job done quickly, either. We need to wait until we can do a better job, The meager compromises and trade-offs that are now on the table will exact a higher price in the future. Consumer frustration and dissatisfaction translates disapproval into votes.

There is no chance for the ideal "single payer option". You have to go to step one; the public option. That allows us to get a foothold in terms of applying a viable health option for most people. There is too strong an enemy to true reform. Imagine going up against the best army in the world with a musket. That's our situation right now.

Once we get a public option, we then work for public campaign financing. That will allow the Congress to get out from under the boot of corporate overlords. Only then can we take our country away from fascism. Corporate power is far too strong for the citizens to overcome them at this time.

We've got to play chess, not checkers.

Read Saul Alinsky's books. Community organizers live by creating protests. Progress comes from protest. So now you are against protests?
I did not see buses?
Acorn busing people in is ok?
Bringing in union thugs to push people out is ok?
It sounds like role reversal and some folks are just not happy with the shoe on the other foot.
02:55 AM on 08/08/2009
Organizing to protest or to ask tough questions is fine. These "teabagger" folks are doing NEITHER. They are there to shout down debate - to impose their will / the will of their corporate masters, on the rest of us, who would prefer to talk about it and arrive at an INFORMED decision on healthcare issues. It is decidedly NOT about whether you are for or against this particular bill (whatever it turns out to be) but about being allowed to discuss, agree or disagree CIVILLY. To characterize the unions as thugs is simply disingenuous on your part and typical of the loathsome tactics employed by this latest version of THE MOB MENTALLITY.

Time to reel in the loonies; marginalize them publicly.
Demand the MSM do their job and do intelligent reporting ; if they have any integrity at all, squeeze it out of them.
Even if many of the righties are not paid, it doesn't excuse them from accountability.
At the same time outline the issue; Are Dems really doing the job they were elected to do?
If the Blue Dogs are representing right of center, so be it. Let's have some clarity.
Vette the Dems and make them show their true colors, then let the public decide.
If there are any honest republicans anywhere, then they can put their 2 cents in.
In other words, lets raise the standard here; sweep away the riff raff (whacko's) and let's have a fight over what kind of reform we really want and need.
05:58 AM on 08/08/2009
Unfortunately, MSM is also rooted in repub philosophy, so it's unlikely they will speak against their own...it's our job to get the truth out about these "grassroot" (which they aren't) groups. They are well funded and backed by very wealthy repubs whose target is to defeat healthcare reform. Check out Rachel Maddow's investigation into recessrally.com for one. One of the many backers is a group americans for prosperity - koch industries- a very wealthy oil company/brothers, 17th richest men in world - real grassroots!!! There is also a link to other town hall meetings disruptions- clean coal for one. Check it out!!!

It is about time that this takes place. Frankly, the Dems need to begin forcing individuals to prove that they live in the district in order to take part in the Forums. They are bringing in these people from all over and being violent and acting like hooligans. Our sytem should not be held hostage to behavior such as that. If someone becomes disruptive, then they should have to leave, and if they become physical they should be arrested, period.

Here is what we need to do to make the Nazi-Republicans happy. Everyone who does not want "Obama Care" can opt out now - for good. No do overs later when they are denied coverage by their insurance carrier or if they lose their job. Everyone else who wants it pays into it and gets covered. Problem solved.

I know. I defended the Planned Parenthood in Houston during the Republican Convention here and they rushed our line, shoving, kicking, spitting, and biting. One of them bit me, drawing blood, and I decked her. The police were going to arrest me, until I objected, pointing to my arm, rolling up my sleeve, and showing the bite marks and the BLOOD. Then, I told the cop I wanted a sample of her lipstick, since she claimed she had not bitten me. He knew I would prevail and let me go, but didn't arrest her.
04:28 PM on 08/07/2009
Okay, this may not be the solution, but it may be a way making the real perpetrators pay a bit more. What about greatly increasing the number of town-hall meetings? Insurance companies and Republican PACs are spending a lot of money carting these idiots around. Therefore, if Dems simply increase the number of town-hall meetings ten-fold, that means ten-times as much money must be spent to organize the protests. Keep the number of town-hall meetings up, and keep draining them.
