If Sky City's construction had gone according to schedule, the world's tallest building would have opened in China in June. Although groundbreaking for the prefabricated skyscraper has been delayed until August, China can enjoy a less coveted superlative this summer: home of the world's largest building.

In Chengdu, a booming tech industry hub in the Sichuan province, the 1.7-million-square-meter New Century Global Center opened at the beginning of July. The mammoth commercial complex, despite its landlocked location, features all the amenities of a vacation on the French Riviera: ample shopping, palm trees, fine hotels, a "Mediterranean" village, and a water park complete with an artificial beach.
"Chengdu's rapid development has meant the city is regularly blanketed by smog," the Telegraph remarks, although you'd never be able to tell: a 24-hour artificial sun shines down into the consumer oasis. Unlike the world outside, the New Century Global Center's simulated horizon is never plagued with acid rain.
