Amanda Moore McBride

Amanda Moore McBride is an Associate Professor at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work (“Brown School) at Washington University in St. Louis, where she is the Associate Dean, responsible for all aspects of the Master of Social Work Program. In this capacity, she is advancing a robust professional training and community partnership program with emphases in community development, affordable housing, and urban education. The Urban Education Initiative is developing new professional roles for social workers to support and manage community resources within the K-12 school setting, promoting students’ social-emotional and civic development along with their academic achievement.



Through the Center for Social Development at the University, Dr. McBride serves as research director of the Center’s research core on civic engagement, which studies civic interventions that mobilize social and political action. Interventions of focus include service learning courses and programming as well as national service and international service. With her international collaborators, she has co-authored two books and three journal issues, and written more than 50 publications on service. Current research is in partnership with the Wyman Center, examining the impacts of their Teen Outreach Service Learning Program in the University City and Normandy School Districts.



Dr. McBride is also a national leader on service in the context of higher education. She leads Washington University’s Richard A. Gephardt Institute for Public Service, where she directs and promotes effective community engagement across the University. Most recently, she chaired Washington University’s April 2013 hosting of the Clinton Global Initiative-University (CGI-U), which brought 1200 students from around the world to the University to develop their civic skills.



Dr. McBride earned a BA from Hendrix College, and an MSW and PhD from Washington University. In 2012, she was the recipient of the Washington University Distinguished Faculty Award, and this year she is being honored by Hendrix College with an Odyssey Award for her “Service to the World.”
