David C. Ward is a historian at the National Portrait Gallery. In addition to “Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture,” he has curated exhibitions on Walt Whitman and Abraham Lincoln at the NPG; his exhibition “Poetic Likeness: Portraits of American Poets” will open at the museum in October. Ward helped edit The Atlantic Monthly’s recent special edition about the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Ward is the author of Charles Willson Peale: Art and Selfhood in the Early Republic (2004) and many other publications including a book of poems, Internal Difference (2011).
