In September 2008, David McCauley sustained a life threatening spinal cord injury at the C6
vertebra, rendering him a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the chest down and limiting the use of his hands. A former snowboarder, surfer, skater, and Sales Director on Wall Street, David was exposed to art therapy post-injury during a 4 month stay in a rehabilitation hospital. As a result of the positive healing experience David cultivated through art, he decided to launch the Rise Up Gallery to introduce people living with paralysis to adaptive ways to create art. David now operates the Rise Up Gallery in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District, showcasing the work of artists with disabilities and offering adaptive art workshops at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
