Emily Sirota

Candidate for Denver Public School Board of Education - District 1 (SE Denver)

Emily Sirota devotes her life to community service and public policy reform. As an economic development specialist, Emily played a key role in former Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer’s statewide effort to improve early childhood education. She crafted education policy by collaborating with business leaders, educators and other community stakeholders. She streamlined statewide administration of many programs by working closely with cabinet-level staff to effectively use resources.

Today, Emily serves Denver as a community organizer and policy analyst. Her main focus is working with non-profits in Colorado on public policy. Recently, she worked to increase participation in Colorado’s food stamp program, conducted an analysis of Colorado’s health care workforce, and worked with a broad coalition to defeat a ballot measure aimed at gutting Colorado’s equal opportunity laws.

As an aide to U.S. Senator Evan Bayh, Emily specialized in health and social policy and then as an aide to U.S. Rep. Baron Hill, she specialized in tax, budget and housing policy. She knows how to get federal dollars working in our community.

Emily is the daughter of a public school teacher and a pediatrician, and is the product of 16 years of public education.

Emily received her master’s degree in social work with a focus in community practice from the University of Denver. She received her bachelor’s degree in political science from Indiana University.

She lives in Southeast Denver with her husband David, who is an author and radio host, her son Isaac, and their dog Monty.
