Francis Battista is a co-founder of Best Friends Animal Society and currently serves as its Interim Board Chair. Best Friends inaugurated a statewide no-kill campaign for Utah in 2000 that to date has resulted in 20 communities with shelter save rates in the no-kill range. In Los Angeles, Best Friends inaugurated and funds the NKLA initiative, a 75-organization coalition that includes the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services. The first two years of the NKLA campaign has realized a reduction in shelter deaths from 23,000 in 20011 to 14,000 at the end of 2013 and L.A. is on track to become a no-kill city by 2017.
