Here are eight reasons why a trip to Iceland should be your New Year's Resolution:

1. Iceland is closer than you think.
Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland is a five-hour direct flight from Boston, Washington, DC and New York on Icelandair. The airline has direct flights from Iceland to seven major airports in North America including Seattle, Orlando, Toronto, Minneapolis and Denver.

We experienced the Northern Lights at Hotel Ranga, a four-star luxury resort in South Iceland. In addition to offering a well-located home base for exploring South Iceland, fine dining and outdoor hot tubs with geothermal waters, Hotel Rangá staff will lookout for the Northern Lights throughout the night and give the guests a wake up call if the Aurora appears.

4. Icelandic Horses
Icelandic horses are petite, at times pony-sized, but most registries for the Icelandic refer to it as a horse. Icelandic horses are long-lived, sure footed and hardy. They are considered to be the world's purest breed. They were brought to Iceland upon Viking ships and served as the only source of transport for many years over the rough terrain of Iceland.

The Icelandic is a "five-gated" breed, which includes walk, trot and canter/gallop, as well as a four-beat lateral ambling gait known as the tölt that is a bit like speed walking. The horses are incredibly socialble and friendly.

We were lucky to have a 90-minute Icelandic horse adventure with The Icelandic Horse Company. The husband and wife owners were so knowledgeable and committed to gentle instruction, education on the special horses and rider's safety. We were all able to do the tölt!

5. Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa
The Blue Lagoon is a unique geothermal spa situated in a lava field in Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula, southwestern Iceland. It's 30 minutes from Reykjavik and only 15 from Keflavik International Airport.

The Blue Lagoon is a large expanse of naturally heated powder-blue water, set amidst a jet black lavascape. Visitors come to bathe and enjoy the extensive range of massage treatments and therapies. There are many museums dedicated to the history and traditions of the Icelandic people including the Saga Museum in Reykjavik, a 10th-century Viking log house, The National Museum of Iceland and our favorite -- the Skogar Museum in South Iceland. The Skogar Museum was founded in 1949 by a 90-year old gentleman who still raises the museum flag each day.

Skogar Museum visitors can see see how the Icelanders lived in the past in small turf houses and learn the history of Icelandic inhabitants. There are tools and instruments used for fishing and farming, old handicrafts and papers, clothes and things related to superstitions to name a few.

8. Hip Reykjavik
Reykjavik is the capital and the largest community in Iceland, with a population of about 200,000. Including the neighboring towns, the capital area has a total population of about 170,000, which is about 60% of Iceland's population of 300,000 people.

Reykjavik's friendly and energetic culture that includes a internationally recognized music and arts scene, great food, fabulous hotels for every budget, chic shopping and a notoriously "enthusiastic" nightlife.

Last Minute Holiday Air Travel Tips to Save Your Sanity

Approximately 24 million travelers will take to the skies in the next few weeks to celebrate the holidays with family and friends, according to Airlines for America. Whether you're visiting Grandma, hitting the slopes or simply getting away from the hustle and bustle, there are some air travel tips you should know.

1.) When booking, allow for more time between connections if you have to stop before your final destination. Did you miss a connection? If you carrier has an app, like American or Southwest, take a look while you are waiting to deplane to see what your options are.

2.) Haven't booked your flights yet? When exploring flight options, take stock of airline miles programs. For example, American Airlines is offering double miles during the busy Thanksgiving period through November 26th.

3.) Sign up for your carrier's flight status notification alerts or download carriers' apps to stay informed about the status of your flight(s).

4.) Save time by checking in online up to 24 hours prior to flight to check in for your flight and print your boarding pass.

5.) Pack light to make moving between gates as the airline substitutes aircraft easier and faster.

6.) When traveling with kids or infants, be sure to bring enough food, snacks and activities like books and coloring books with you. Many domestic flights do not offer food. Hungry, bored children are not good passengers.

7.) Dress yourself and your children in comfortable clothes, and wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off at the security checkpoint. (No high heels. Even if traveling to warm climates, wear shoes with a covered toe, airplanes can be cold!)

8.) Consider purchasing a day pass to your airlines lounge or club (ie American Airlines' Admirals Club or United Lounge) you can stay out of the hustle and bustle of the airport, get extra assistance, be productive or relax in the quieter atmosphere. The lounges have WiFi, TV's, snacks and drinks.

9.) Curbside Check-in is another great time saver. You can check your bag with a skycap at the curb, and then it's a straight shot to the security line and your gate.

10.) If you're over the age of 18, federal law requires you to show a government-issued photo ID at TSA checkpoints. See http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/acceptable_documents.shtm for examples of TSA acceptable IDs.

11.) If you're traveling internationally, don't forget your passport, as well as other important documents for all customers, including lap children. Make copies to carry with you (or scan and e-mail a copy to yourself) and leave with others at home.

Bonus tip: Families traveling with a child who is a first-time flyer can commemorate their first time in the sky with American's new "First Flight Certificate." Ask a flight attendant on board any American Airlines flight for the keepsake signed by the aircraft's pilots and flight attendants. JetBlue, United, Continental and Virgin America will give children wings upon request.

Poshbrood caught up with some travel experts, road warriors and celebs to find out their must-have travel items to help make their travels more enjoyable. Note: Apple gadgets are a crowd favorite...

Wendy Perrin is Condé Nast Traveler's Director of Consumer News and Digital Community. She has written the magazine's practical advice column The Perrin Report for 16 years and is considered an authority on consumer travel issues.

"If I had to choose only one must-have travel item, it would probably be my iPhone. It's not only my communication device but also my camera, map, alarm clock, flashlight, tape recorder and, thanks to apps I've installed, personal assistant, airline gate agent, and hotel concierge."

Anne Heche is a mother, actor, director, producer and Founder of Tickle Time Sunscreen. Anne, her partner, Revenge actor James Tupper and her two boys reside in Los Angeles.

Heather Poole is a flight attendant working for a major US carrier for fifteen years. Her recent book, best-selling Cruising Attitude is a charming and funny insider's account of life and work in the not-always-friendly skies.

"The survivalist in me wants to say a bottle of water and snacks that don't expire for five years. That's because I've been on too many flights that have been delayed hours because of weather or that have diverted to other airports due to medical emergencies and I know there's not enough food in coach to feed a full plane full of passengers. That aside, I rarely ever travel without headphones. Only because you never know when you're going to sit next to someone who likes to talk - a lot. If you're a flight attendant, or even a frequent flier, you're often too tired to strike up a lengthy conversation with a stranger. A lot of times I don't even turn the music on. Today in Reykjavik, Iceland, Yoko Ono will give the Biennial LENNONONO GRANT FOR PEACE to five activists. This day coincides with the birthday of John Lennon and his son Sean. John Lennon would be 72 today.

Why Iceland? "Iceland is such a beautiful, special country. The air, water and land are clean and pure," Ono explained, "They are protecting the natural resources and have been using their geothermal energy since the 1930's."

Lady Gaga is not only an artist, she is also an activist, using her art to bring better communication to the world. She is being acknowledged for her activism, and how her album "Born This Way" has widely changed the mental map of the world.

Rachel Corrie was a 23-year-old American peace activist from Olympia, Washington, who was crushed to death by an Israeli bulldozer on 16 March 2003, while undertaking nonviolent direct action to protect the home of a Palestinian family from demolition. In the wake of her killing, the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice continues the work that Rachel Corrie began.

JOHN PERKINS
Author and activist John Perkins gained international acclaim for his book Confessions of an Economic Hit Man which remained on the New York Times best seller list for more than a year. It is a startling expose on international corruption.

CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS
Christopher Hitchens was an author and journalist with a career that spanned four decades writing for many of the world's most prestigious news outlets such as The Atlantic, The Nation, Vanity Fair and many more. He authored twelve books and five collections of essays and was nominated for the National Book Award in 2007 for his best-selling book God is Not Great which contends that organized religion is "the main source of hatred in the world." Hitchens was known for his confrontational style which made him a widely controversial figure in the western hemisphere.

PUSSY RIOT
Russian feminist punk rock band Pussy Riot stepped onto the global stage in February of 2012 after a performance at Moscow's sacred Cathedral of Christ the Saviour church in which they invoked the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of President Vladimir Putin. Three of the group's members were arrested and charged with Hooliganism. Their trial recently concluded with a two year jail sentence that has seen strong international criticism calling into question Russia's policies towards freedom of speech and expression.

I asked Yoko Ono -- who at 79 is as youthful, energetic and beautiful as ever -- how she picks the recipients, is there a committee or board? "No, I feel it in here," she said pointing to her heart, "It comes from the heart."

"Lady Gaga is a power singer and songwriter that has used her strong position to correct prejudice," Ono elaborates. "She took on a controversial issue and risked throwing her enormous popularity to the dogs."

Lady Gaga will accept the award in person, and accept a charitable donation that she will in turn give to the Elton John AIDS Foundation to support their work combating HIV among disadvantaged youth in the U.S.

Bulletproof Luxury: Possibly The Most Outrageous Hotel Suite in America (Photos)

Behind soundproof, bullet-resistant glass, a private entrance and a closed-captioned security system, the Royal Suite at The Four Seasons Washington is as beautiful as it is functional. Custom-designed wool-and-silk-blend rugs adorn the limestone floor and ground the contemporary furnishings throughout the suite. Crystal fixtures contrast with rich wood, iridescent shell details and furnishings in a silvery palette. Even the most jaded and discerning of luxury travelers would be thrilled to stay in this dazzling apartment.

As we enter the foyer, I am temporarily blinded by a gorgeous galaxy of Swarovski crystal fixtures, rich ebony wood with inlays of mother of pearl and a scalloped pattern of sparkling stone mosaic. The foyer opens to the dining room, which accommodates 10 and is equipped with a Bang & Olufsen LCD for those important PR or diplomatic meetings overlooking the huge private terrace. A fully equipped kitchen pantry with Sub-Zero refrigerator and separate service entrance is adjacent.

From the main entrance level, twin stairways lead to a stunning open space. American walnut portals define the living spaces, which include four distinct seating areas. The lounge offers posh leather oval chairs and a Lalique sea goddess.

The main conversation area has luxe Italian sofas, chairs and a handmade alligator table. The library is decorated with warm inglenook-style seating, a glass fireplace and custom cabinets displaying a collection of art books. Finally, the media area is fully outfitted with Bang & Olufsen systems, including a 60-inch LCD on which you can watch Meet The Press, Access Hollywood, or review the dailies from the movie you're shooting in Washington.

I'm fantasizing about hosting a cocktail party in this gorgeous space but Lilianna Baldassari, public relations director for the hotel, tells me that this suite is not available to rent for parties. She also tells me that this suite is $15,000 a night and everyone pays full retail. *Gulp.* There are no VIP room upgrades to this grande dame.

The floor-to-ceiling windows is framed with embellished silk velvet drapery, surrounds the entire living space. The suite opens to reveal a landscaped 1,000-square-foot terrace designed as an urban getaway with 3 seating groupings, a fire pit and a dining table for 10 overlooking historic Georgetown.

Here are Hilary Phelps and I on the terrace, pretending that we live here:

Neutral mohair carpet leads into the bedroom foyer and master suite. Its bathroom features an expanse of white marble surrounds, a sculptural 90-gallon bathtub and more gorgeous crystal fixtures are elegantly draped overhead.

Contemporary chrome fittings add sparkle to the space along with a rain shower with Vichy jets and a frameless glass enclosure. The bedroom with its alluring silver and cream palette, elegant hand-knotted carpet and cream millwork opens to the outdoor terrace overlooking Georgetown.

This private space also includes his-and-hers walk-in closets, a ladies' dressing and sitting area, a private wood-paneled office and an exercise room with an elliptical trainer, a treadmill and two Bang & Olufsen LCD screens. As we complete the tour, it suddenly dawns on me that this suite is larger than my suburban Bethesda home.

The Phelps Family's Best of London

Now that the 2012 Summer Olympics are over, Michael Phelps' family shares their travel tips, highlights of their London trip and some personal photos! Of course, the Phelps' played tourist after cheering on Michael, who confirmed his swimming and sports legacy by becoming the most decorated Olympian of all time with 22 medals.

Debbie Phelps, Michael's mom, and his sister Hilary Phelps, are two of his biggest supporters and fans.
If you watched Olympic swimming, you probably saw them in the stands, along with Michael's other sister Whitney, jumping up and down, screaming encouragement, hugging, high-fiving and crying with joy. Hilary and Debbie have both been to London once before - Hilary for the 2002 Jubilee and Debbie in 2010 for an appearance. This was the Phelps family's first visit to London together.

Debbie and Hilary agreed this Olympics was unlike any other, as they didn't have as much time to sightsee as they have had in the past. The schedule was constant. Hilary explained, "We woke up at the same time every morning and met for breakfast, left the hotel, watched swimming and then spent the afternoon sightseeing before heading back to the pool for finals."

The Phelps family stayed at the Chancery Court Hotel in Holburn, a former insurance building. They found it quite beautiful, with the white marble; drive in courtyard and elegant details.

"We had a list of sightseeing that we were hoping to tackle, but made it through only a few," said Debbie. "We had a free night and we decided to head to the London Eye after the conclusion of finals."

Mama Phelps recommends purchasing the Flexible Fast Track tickets, which essentially allows visitors to cut the lines. The Phelps' arrived at 11:45 just sneaking in before it closed at midnight. Debbie added, "There were only a handful of people and NO line whatsoever. This gave us a laugh and had an enjoyable ride with wonderful views of the city."

Before heading to finals to watch Michael win the 100-meter Butterfly, the Phelps ladies took a double decker bus over London Bridge and got a great overview the city.
They also took their 6-year old niece Taylor (the tiniest Phelps family member at the Olympics) to the historic Hamley's toyshop.

"Early mornings and late nights wore on the adults and she was a real trooper for the 10 days we were in London." said Debbie. Taylor got to pick out one toy at Hamley's with the stipulation that it had to fit in her luggage. "I was convinced that she would pick a glitter tattoo, fairy or a doll," laughed Hilary. "But she chose a magic trick and practiced the rest of the time in London."

The Phelps family was able to celebrate and spend time together on Sunday upon the conclusion of swimming. "We waited for Michael to complete his competition obligations, which included drug testing, media and checking out of the Olympic village before our first 'congratulatory' hug around 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning," explained Hilary. "We had a few moments together, saw the medals, took a family photo and then headed back to the hotel and to bed."

Hilary had a little more time in London than Debbie and did some London specific shopping at Selfridge's and walked Oxford Street. "The shopping was outstanding! I picked up a black leather bag and a pair of leather pants," dished Hilary. "On a separate trip, I found a lovely pair of black Tom Baker booties with a bow along the side -- very Valentino-esque!"

She also took tea at the posh Berkley Hotel, enjoyed dinner at Mosimann's (they catered the Royal Wedding) and spent a day in Windsor, walking the town and touring the Castle.

The Phelps family had plans to travel outside the city to Stonehenge, see the Changing of the Guards and view art at the Tate Modern, but it didn't happen this trip. Exclaimed Hilary, "Maybe Wimbledon 2013!"

Debbie Phelps has taken on a new role in the school system as the Director of the Baltimore County Public School Education Foundation, an organization that provides resources for the students, teachers and programs of the Baltimore County Public Schools that regular funds cannot support.
